Yeah, but in many cases religion is just used after the fact to justify bigotry. It's really unlikely that people are growing up in a vacuum without any preconceived ideas about homosexuality and then forming an opinion after careful consideration of their religious teachings. It's just super convenient that their god shares whatever prejudices they developed independently.
I’m sorry but this is a very inaccurate statement. The vast majority of people (if you agree with them or not) develop their moral foundation off of the religious beliefs they grew up in or joined later in life. A persons spiritual beliefs greatly shapes their world view. To say people are bigoted so they go find or shape a god to fit that as an excuse is not only short sided, but frankly insulting.

Also I need to correct something I’ve seen multiple times here. Disagreeing with a persons actions/lifestyle is not bigoted. There are a lot of things that I feel is morally wrong that I have done and others have done. Saying I don’t support those actions isn’t bigoted. I love my kids but that doesn’t mean I live everything they do. Calling people slurs, firing from work without cause, segregating, physically assaulting etc.. those are bigoted actions.

We can discuss wether this situation was handled correctly or not. Is there a better way to voice your beliefs while being compassionate to others. I’m fine with that discussion. But calling people of faith bigoted and using faith simply to be hateful is more bigoted than not wearing a jersey in warmups. Let’s have this discussion without throwing around blind accusations.

So once again, the people who are advocating equal rights are the real bigots, not the people who consider gays less than full humans.

f*** that bullshit.

If you use religion or anything else for the purpose of discriminating against people for the way they're born then you're' a bigot. By definition. That goes for skin color or sexual orientation, whatever "moral" cloak you want to throw on it. Imagine if some player did this in response to an event honoring black history in the NHL. How would that be "moral"?

Not all religions are bigoted but the ONE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE APPARENTLY IS.

Noticing that dynamic running through a LOT of religious dogma is not bigotry it's counter-bigotry.

Full stop.

Ok everyone this topic has run its course like it always does. Any more posts here will dumpstered...
Do NOT like quoting my own post here but needed to do some clean up with some deleted posts.

That said I do respect the debate and personally value the opinions/conversations.

Though there is some initial leeway but it does have a time limit... and when a Capitals mod calls time on it.... well it is time.

Unpopular opinion I do still pine for that unmoderated (somewhat hidden) politics forum that was murdered by a certain election but it is gone so there is a focus on the topics that are appropriate for HFBoards.

70 goals is definitely in play.

He has 8 goals in his past 8 games and 18 in his past 15.

He's pretty good, but its hard to tell if that's just a real heater or his new normal?
I think it was him being pissed losing out on the Hart and Lindsay last season. Reminds me of that time Sid did similar to win the Rocket.

I also get the feeling that Draisaitl challenged him to hit 60 before the season and McDavid just went out and did it.

I don't understand how the NHL has a player the level of McDavid and he isn't on every sports platform he can be. This league is just so awful at building up narratives or enabling personalities. Just held back by ineptitude at the top.

They went back to ESPN because they specialize in hyping players a la the NBA but it doesn't seem to be translating.

It's the same problem they always have: some of the best players are on Canadian teams and the network ratings people only look at 3-5 big US markets with a sprinkling of other smaller markets.

This is why fans always accuse the league of trying to rig the draft in favor of some of those big markets, and why everyone in the industry groans every time Edmonton or MTL etc wins

The hockey "personalities" ESPN chose are big names but they're awful on at the job. I think that's a big part of the problem. The broadcasts are unwatchable. The league chose TNT for the same reason but folks like me without a cable subscription can't watch those games. It's a new world and this deal doesn't reflect that, especially if they want to attract younger viewers using younger talent. You can't put a shriveled Chelios and Gretzky out there and expect that to appeal to a 20-something demographic. It's pitiful.

But they went back to ESPN and I still never see it on the main channel or promoted well anywhere around it. They then put it behind the walled garden of ESPN+. Mom's watched Caps religiously for the last 30 years and ESPN+ has been the worst experience getting her onto "streams" so she can watch a game, it's a joke.

Beyond that, it's just dinosaurs all the way up and down the game of hockey holding it back. They way they portray it is so elementary and non-engaging. I'm not saying go full NBA, but they should at least be taking some pointers from the NFL. The only personality I've seen out of any sports commentator for hockey has been PK, and he's just ok. But that tops the charts for hockey representation.

I do think there's an interesting discussion to be had around the game/system of hockey, in that the development through juniors -> ahl -> majors probably beats the presonality out of a lot of players which is another big issue.

So true. You can’t just pick past great players and expect them to be great announcers/analysts. Remember Joe Gibbs on CBS? Yea, I’d like to forget it too.

The only NHL story I see consistently on ESPN this year is the B’s historical season and chase for best record. They probably had a 10 sec spot on SC about McDavid reaching 60, I dunno.

It’s fun being on the WC now, so I can scream - EAST COAST BIAS!! ;)

But, it’s true - most people are asleep while McDavid plays. I think that hurts him more than being in a small market like EDM.

agreed. I will say though that ESPN+ has a nice section on Ovie's chase to 895, including a terrific episode of Details narrated by Brett Hull. How did I not see this before?!?!?

Yes!! I watched that “Details” ep too, and loved it. I promoted it in the Ovi player thread a while back.

If people haven’t seen or heard of it, definitely check it out. And the “Gr8tness” special ofc, that I think (?) most saw, as it was on just before the ASG.

I also like the ESPN+ show “In the Crease” with Linda Cohn. It’s a quick (~ 15 min) highlight package of the previous day’s games. Nice way to keep up on the league.

Whenever the NHL makes a major decision and it's almost universally hated right away (the lockouts, no best-on-best international tournaments, moving adds on the dasherboards, signing a deal with Fanatics, etc) this is how I imagine Gary Bettman explaining his thought process.
