It's a neat fact. It's rare. It's a strong small sample but sustaining, expanding and improving upon that will be essential. It doesn't inherently mean that's a playoff team, esp. not with that goaltending. Dominating the run of play is a great but the other stuff is huge. Getting sorted will be tough.

Add Hughes, add Nemec, maybe add a legit vet goalie next summer and, yeah, the division will be spiced up for sure. As-is I don't know that anyone should be a massive believer in NJD this season just yet. The Caps spanked them without being all that sharp. Controlling the run of play is great but there's plenty in execution otherwise that makes or breaks teams. And it's not like PIT/NYR aren't beginning to cool off. I'm not all that concerned by the landscape thus far. It's still ultimately on the Caps finding their groove, being consistent, not hitting skids and staying healthy. They seem to be getting there, largely helped by getting much more reliable goaltending.

More concerning is that OTT/BUF/DET are also improved so there will likely be less margin for error. But we'll see just how much that's shrunk. In an 82 game season intangibles and experience can be key in navigating through adversity and maintaining direction. I'm still not sure the landscape has shifted significantly to where they're in danger. I think we generally know what their level is and there may not be too much variance. Whether it's enough will be dictated by the landscape and I'm not sure it's quite there yet to be overly concerned. They have to remain vigilant, of course.

@twabby one of the teams on that list is your often mocked 21-22 Calgary Flames. You know, the one built by out of touch dinosaurs giving hilarious contracts to bad players? Thoughts?

Not great for anyone involved. Chychrun has to be frustrated, Coyotes likely want a resolution here, and any team who wants him has to wait or find other solutions. Maybe a decent buy low opportunity.

I made fun of one bad contract they gave out last year. And then another team gave him 4 x $4 million this year! What a league!

Huh, it appears Erik Karlsson is good again.
I think the departure of Brent Burns has made a big difference. I've had my suspicions for a while that Burns was the number 1 guy and top dog in San Jose, and this impacted Karlsson in a pretty big way. Now he's gone Karlsson can be "the guy" - and it seems he is still capable of that.

Not a Sharks fan but I am enjoying Karlsson's resurgence, He seems like a good guy

Wow if you didn't see the highlights from Toronto / Kings you should. Sammy lost his stick on TWO of the four goals. He might be reverting to the mean after a pretty good start.

Secretly enjoying it, I'm not going to lie....
Same old, same old.

Loses his stick twice and gives up on the play. Can't say i miss that.

It’s happening again.

The only reason Columbus signed Gudbranson to that contract is because Gaudreau demanded it, right? Like they’re best friends or something.

Otherwise they chose Gudbranson over Bjorkstrand, which is wild!

Sorry for making the NHL thread the Devils thread, but there isn’t anyone who can tell me New Jersey won’t be a problem for Washington this year.

The Devils are currently 4-3-0 despite having a .849 team save percentage, by far the worst in the NHL and unsustainably bad. They are going to be a problem this year.

They may take up a playoff spot, but I ain’t scared of a team with no goaltending. That will sink any team.

If NJ gets a spot then Washington will need to unseat another team from the playoff picture. Who would it be? Who are they better than among CAR, NYR, PIT, TOR, FLA, TB, and BOS?

Odds are Washington will still make the postseason, but NJ being this good is going to make it much more difficult.

It’s a long season and lot will shift. Caps won 4-last 6. Pens are lost 4 in a row. Igor struggling. Things will shift more in next 5 games. Regardless, can’t worry about everyone else. Caps need to keep finding a way to win.

Who cares? Why worry about anyone but ourselves?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Yeah, I'm not concerned. Either they earn it or the disappointment comes early. No biggie. Better draft position if that does happen...assuming they hold on to it.

Fundamentally speaking really only Boston & Carolina look like frontrunners at this stage. Literally everyone else in the East has issues.
