Can’t see Boston having much interest in this unless they think they think they have a 1-2 year window with the current team and that Kuznetsov moves the needle for them in that window. Frederick is younger and cheaper which is important to a team like Boston.

I could see Boston moving something like Frederic, their 2025 1st, and someone like DeBrusk to Winnipeg for Scheifele or to Calgary for Lindholm (or for PLD before that ship sailed) but not for someone as risky as Kuznetsov.

Kuznetsov really f***ed himself and the team by mailing it in last year. If he played like #KuzyMagic then he’d be a lot easier to move which would be beneficial for everyone. As it is, he’s a 31-year old malcontent coming off a terrible year in which he was arguably one of the 10 worst defensive forwards in the NHL. Not great, Bob.

No i agree with you. They probably wouldn't take that. But it's a weird feeling being ok with trading away a super-skilled center who had a 31 point playoff run and where you can so clearly see the enormously high skill level for a #3-4 grindy agitator type.

I'm glad Bruins are screwed. Those upcoming picks are going to be good ones.

I mean, if we are out-of-nowhere playing at a 130+ point pace in the January then we would absolutely go for it. Bruins didn't exactly 'go for it' during last summer. They were bracing themselves for a tough season with Marchand and McAvoy out long-term to start the season and everyone expected them to miss the Playoffs.
I’m not necessarily saying it was the wrong move for them in the moment because yeah, that pace is about as good as it gets, the point is that they bought at the deadline and went all in on a team about as promising as you could reasonably hope, lost in round 1, and now have some serious decisions to make.

Considering the conversations that have gone on here, I’m fine with GMBM not going wild to gear up a much worse team if it means they immediately lose the kind of flexibility they currently have in their mid-term window (even if it doesn't look like it at the moment).

That guy is long gone…time to let it go…moving on from him will make the transition away from a weakened core better in the long run…

Yeah you're probably right. Just remember the flair and elegance he played with and how well it complimented the brute force of Ovi and the meat & potato two way play of Bäckström.

But i guess memories are the base of Caps fandom for the next couple of years:)

Just like Semin….what could have been if they only had the heart Ovechkin does.

My Dad is from inner city Pittsburgh, and so I had A LOT of family there growing up. Once my Dad moved to MD he always called it Sh*tsburgh, lol.

But yea, it’s kind of an underrated city - there’s lots of cool spots downtown. The three rivers area, and Mt Washington are good for sight seeing, etc… And as you said, there’s a solid tech sector.

When I was a kid, my dad would get us Caps ticket packages - and he would always include all the Pens games. So I saw prime Lemieux, and Jagr kick our ass regularly at the ol’ Caps Center.

Once the Ovi/Crosby rivalry started, I tried to explain to my dad how much I hated the Pens, and that he had to pick a side, ha. He was unmoved and so was happy when the Pens started winning more Cups in ‘09. And I had to take crap from the other relatives.

So friends, this is my secret shame as a Caps fan - deep familial Pittsburgh ties, and a Pens loving father. I beg your forgiveness, lol.

All of the hockey fans in my family + family friends are either Pitt or (mostly) Philly fans so I feel ya lol

Just an odd trade and I don’t really like it from Pittsburgh’s perspective very much. Retained on Petry and took on Karlsson at $10 million for the next 5 years.

Montreal is also already looking to flip Petry and willing to eat 50% of his remaining salary to gain more assets. They could come out at the clear winners in this deal

Penguins extended their 'window' and did well doing so. Risky move but they dumped their crap in the process. If you wanted to give it a go, this was the move. Now just need to pray you get the right Karlsson and Jarry can stay healthy to keep EK and Letang from bleeding hilarious amount of goals against.

I like it that they moved themselves to different direction as us. They have no 2024 1st or 2025 2nd now so by the time they get to start their proper rebuild our prospect pool is going to be loaded already.

That’s an incredible trade from Pittsburgh. Creative move getting a bunch of junk off their roster and they didn’t give up much, oh and also they got an excellent D in return.

They aren’t in the top 2 in the Metro but I think with this move they have separated themselves from the NYI/WSH tier and are right there with NYR for #3 in the division.

I like it for PIT, at least in the short-term as a shot in the arm offensively. Hard not to place them above WSH & NYI offensively. They may wind up playing a lot of pond hockey but so be it. It's about all an aging roster is good for. Of course, their forward depth is still trash and Dubas doesn't seem to know how to build rosters really based on his time in Toronto. But PIT did at least get off of the contracts of Petry, Granlund, DeSmith and Rutta so that's a win in itself. Their main problem remains: where's the surplus value coming from?

I just don't understand the Karlsson love, yeah an immaculate offensive talent but he had a heater of a year last year. There isn't a point your buying higher then this year. This also displaces Letang on the PP, which hurts his value to the team.

It’s impressive they managed to get rid of Petry and Granlund, they are def going for it and not worrying about the post Crosby era. I wish Washington had a bit more of this approach
Pens have a “wink wink” agreement w Bettman to get top 3 draft choices 3 yrs in a row once Crosby and Co retire

I think it’s about how they were able to clean out all of their trash contracts, and get the Norris winner — all for a 1st and a 2nd (and getting a 3rd back)

I’ll be annoyed if Washington doesn’t have this approach next offseason. It makes some sense to step back this year and be patient but they can’t just piss away Ovechkin’s career making long-term moves.

It’s always interesting to think what goes through the players minds when a deal like this happens. You think Geno and Crosby are fired up and thanking Dubas for acquiring a top level talent. It obviously doesn’t guarantee anything but it has to send some sort of message, or do they not really care. And we live in a continuous void of caring way too much about sports

Impressive to get those contracts off the books for sure. Good on Dubas there.

I’m not sold on karlson tho. I think he’s below average defensively and very streaky offensively. I’ll be curious how they carve out the ES and PP minutes with him and letang.

All that said. They are still better than the caps on paper.
