NHL prospect Landon Sim was suspended 5 games for calling player Mennonite.

When it’s used as an insult

Did the opposing player feel insulted or just the Zebras?

I'm not arguing the suspension, it is absolutely in line with its current rule language, just trying to understand how the opposing player would have felt insulted. Who /is/ the opposing player and what's the story behind that?

Is it just me but does this not seem ridiculous
Players have said racial slurs and other stuff and gotten similar suspensions which now seems so little when something like this got 5 games….mennonite? Seriously?

What’s next “Prospect suspended for calling a player ‘you’re such a Lutheran!’…” lmao

I'm expecting something like a player getting suspended for calling a guy an apple head, then the OHL saying we don't know if its a slur but it sounded like it marginalizes someone lol

Racial slurs, homophobic slurs, sure those should be dealt with harshly, but this is so weird to get suspended for.

I think the rules are they can’t appeal if it’s less than 10 game suspensions? Because I would appeal that on grounds of it being comical.

that's a creative way to call someone soft in a hockey game. i highly doubt any offense was taken by mennonites.

it is an idiotic and lazy rule that any invocation of any religious or ethnic identity is objectionable whether or not it is realistically offensive to the group in question. it is the kind of officious bureaucratic overreach that results when you allow free expression to be undervalued and overly regulated. the karens win.

When it’s used as an insult
what insults are you ok with?

I would say ones that insult how you act vs how or who you are

Would you consider insulting someone by calling them a jew “appropriate “?
This doesn't make sense. A Mennonite player was being chirped for being a Mennonite.

Would it be ok in your mind for a player to chirp this: "haha ya f'ing JEW" to Zack Hyman ?

Yes or no.

Yes, to answer your question, it's fine. It's just another way of saying "f*** you!" to someone you're competing against in a game.

What's REALLY the infringement here that Sim should be punished for? Was this opposing player devastated? Did he feel unsafe? Does he feel unwelcome in a league of intolerance? Probably not and if he did then get over it. Players talk shit to each other.

The type of people who think a 5 game suspension for this is appropriate think they're building a better world, they're really just building a more censored world that exacerbates people's differences and makes them feel victimized by them.

I'm honestly surprised some teenage meathead who probably can't even spell "Mennonite" would put in the effort for that specific of a chirp.

Its 2024 i know it’s generally socially unacceptable to insult someone based on their race/religion/ethnicity

Doesn’t matter the intent
Doesn’t matter if the person is offended or not

Going onto the ice and yelling "you f'ing Hindu" to Nazim Kadri. Racial slur or not ?

Technically, its not. Hinduism is a religion. But most would be ignorant to that and it would be labelled as racism.

So I don't see what the problem with being consistent is.

The intent and usage is important. Context is important. I don’t think his words merit a 5 freaking game suspension. That’s egregious

I guess im inferring that the insult wasn’t simply “hey you mennionite” but i agree that 5 games is excessive

That said, if the sport is serious about removing racism and bigotry from the game consistency and standardization are very important

What was the actual harm done to the opposing player, I ask again? Sometimes words are just that. Especially in the heat of a game.

That's a different race and religion. It's not even remotely the same. So if that's your attempt at comparing the two then you've failed.

He literally called the bloke a Mennonite. That's like calling someone a Lutheran or Baptist. It's a different faction of the same religion. Calling a bloke that is Muslim a Hindu I would gather isn't remotely the same.

Then again I'm not either religion or race.

How is it not ? I personally think it should be open season for trashing talking. Anything goes. But that's besides the point.

Would you think its ok for a player to say "haha ya f"in Sikh" to a Sikh player ?
Yeah i would think it's ok.

If someone says to me "haha ya f"in Atheist!!" i really wouldn't give a shit. What makes it NOT ok?

I Have yet to meet someone who broke down in tears and suffered irrepairable trauma for having their religion pointed out to them. Let's not be babies.

I guess you’re just going to ignore or not read anything ive wrote so far, have a good night bud
You’re just saying it’s socially unacceptable and bigotry. That doesn’t make it so.

I find your line of thinking more insulting and offensive than anything said on the ice.

It is definitionally not different at all.

Obviously the player was being taunted for being a Mennonite because he actually was a Mennonite. The chirping player didn't just pull Mennonite out of the air. He obviously knew the player.

So again, it is not different than calling Zak Hyman a f'ing Jew. Or Kadri a f'ing Muslim.

Yeah, that's soft. I have an old school way of thinking that words stay on the ice and that's about it. I honestly don't care what the players are saying to each other. If someone crosses the line you drop the mitts and that lets the players police it themselves. And you leave it there. Males are p*ssies these days. It is embarrassing.

It’s about enforcement and consistency

How can you allow someone to call someone a f***ing mennonite but not a f***ing jew

How can you allow someone to call someone a f***ing Jew but not allow to call them a f***ing homosexual

I feel that if you can’t understand this and separate it from whatever you think i feel about those types of insults it’s on you
