Great oral history of the 1996 tournament put out by ESPN. Good insights into the Canadian and especially American teams. Chelios was right at the end too. It does still bug me.

I think it's always forgotten that the US made the final of the last Canada Cup. Yes they got hammered, but plenty of guys from that team were there in 1996 and I think it gave them a lot of confidence and experience.

How about 94' in Norway?

I can't remember even one person taking that loss seriously. Nice novelty, but the Olympics without NHLers was never taken all that seriously.

Could be. The 1991 Canada Cup is probably the most lackluster best on best ever. Weak Soviet team for political reasons, workmanlike Canada that left a lot of its best offensive talent at home in favour of grinders, and the rest not at a level to really compete. I'm sure it gave a lot of the Americans confidence in the sense that they had been there before and not embarrassed themselves. Impressive for USA that the 1996 Canadian team was stronger than the 1991 Canadian team as well.
