Subtitles aren’t even fully accurate necessarily, so one could be purist to the point of saying reading English subtitles also cheapens the work. I didn’t read Dante’s Inferno in medieval Italian either.

Kiki’s Delivery Service takes place in Sweden anyway, so the Japanese isn’t even contextual. It simply comes down to quality of animated dubs, and no animated films are dubbed (again, they are technically all dubbed) to the quality of Ghibli. I have seen Ghibli dubbed and subbed, and it’s only a matter of preference.

I have subtitles on everything I watch. It started after I couldn’t understand a thing that was said in a certain Irish mafia show on Netflix that I bailed on midway thru the first episode and then realized it was my hearing sucking and not their mangled ass English.

I'm mostly just being mischievous - I don't like dubs at all. One of the reasons I go to anime in the first place is to get the f*** away from Western culture. It's just a matter of preference.

I actually do this a lot, too. My hearing has gone to shit, but I also think a lot of directors allow too much mumbling from their actors.

I blame the overtly loud sound and music tracks droning out the speech. I have no real problem focusing on the dialogue in 90’s and earlier movies even with my tinnitus. Movies from the 00’s on it seems like someone told every studio to make everything louder because it’s what the people want.

I already know this is because Michael Keaton dubbed Porco Rosso. I’m onto you, sir.

We have captions on at all times for my wife. She speaks English better than I do, quite frankly, but it's still her second language so she misses stuff, particularly if there are heavy accents she's not used to, etc. I've become used to it, and now also prefer having captions on.

As for dubbing vs. not dubbing: yes, huge not dubbing fan for live action stuff. The actor deserves to have their performance stand, and the art is just better for it. It's less of an issue with animated films, but I feel there's still something to be said for the original performance.

Also, subtitles, while my strong preference, are almost always flawed. Sometimes it's unavoidable--i.e. untranslatable idioms, etc., but other times it seems really random or unnecessary.

It goes right up my asshole when the dub and the sub don’t match up. The Russian show “to the lake” and the German Netflix shows are like this. I can’t watch it if it’s like that.

The pacing of the subs have to be done really well too. When the speed of my reading puts me ahead of the action of the conversation and turns the subs into spoilers, it really can deflate the narrative tension.

That’s the worst. I find I have to read half. Stop. Then read the second half.
It’s like catching a glimpse of the last page of a novel constantly.

We’re gonna get some celebrity picks going on here with our Official Team Poster, Surrounded By Ahos set to make our make up picks.

I have no idea how many I have at this point so let’s just say pick all of these categories that aren’t filled yet. Draft order be damned.

Aka I can’t be bothered so draft for me peon.

Can you post my list like you did yours? Maybe he’ll knock mine out while he’s at it if I confuse him enough.

Surrounded By Ahos is not a peon. He’s a proud member of the Desert Ducks and you will be hearing from our lawyer (Vincent LaGuardia Gambini).

I was bored one week a few years back and decided I'd translate Inferno from the original Italian, for fun. Translation is mostly plug and chug when written, you've got all the time you need to figure out words, right?

No.

No, do not try this. Don't try figuring out Venetian, either. Also do not try Southern Italian pre-unification either.

I thought Spanish in the Americas was annoying with regional differences. Italian up through 1900ish is a complete debacle. It wasn't anywhere near as fun as I thought. It reads like everyone hated their neighbors so much that they deliberately made their local languages incomprehensible out of spite.

I also ran into this doing ancestry stuff during COVID. Trying to figure out a record relating to an ancestor. It said that he was jailed (Maybe?) briefly for doing murder in a baby-prison. Now, it kind of seemed this meant he wandered into an orphanage and killed a kid, but the entire tenor around it was that he paid some fine and it was no big deal and there was no need for a trial. So either amusing yourself by killing orphans was wholly legal down in Calabria, or there was some kind of dialect-specific thing going on that wasn't surviving modern literal translation. I gave up and sent that document to an Italian-fluent friend who'd lived in Rome for years and he told me it read like gibberish in modern Italian.
