This is going back over a decade, so not sure how many people remember it, but here is a true local Toronto Icon.

Team Local Icon - Darwin the Ikea Monkey

@JojoTheWhale Two picks in under 4 hours. Will miracles never cease?

I would realize I’m up 8 minutes before a PoE2 Closed Beta starts. Speedrun time.

Team Card Game: Race For The Galaxy

1200px-Race_for_the_Galaxy_table_gameplay.jpg

An all-time classic. Simple to teach and quick to play once you’ve played a game. You build a tableau in front of you that scores points. Most points wins. But the twist is that you buy cards with the other cards in your hand. That keeps it fresh on replays and this version in particular plays extremely well with 2-4 people. Finding something that plays well with 2 is a lot harder than you might think. I would not personally suggest eating the components but this lad from the internet disagrees. That’s ok too.

Hurry the f*** up, @JojoTheWhale

I waited too long on picking a Knight of the Round Table. It's like I traded back from picking Zeev Buium because I really love third round picks and just went "Well damn, only Luchanko left?"

Anyway, I'm going with a lesser known Knight of the Round Table because he was apparently quite bad ass and also because in the midst of a feud with three brother knights he bedded their widowed mother to exact revenge on them.

Is it thematic for us in any way? No. Have I given up on paring down the remaining somewhat random Knights of the Round Table? Yes.

Welcome the pick of indifference - Sir Lamorak.

Alongside Lancelot and Tristan, Sir Lamorak was one of the three strongest Knights of the Round Table but, for whatever reason, is much less famous today than his brother Percival. Lamorak was one of the sons of King Pellinore, who was himself sometimes included on the list of Round Table knights.

A bold, confident man who was quick to anger, Lamorak was an exceptionally skilled knight on the field of battle. But in peacetime, he sometimes caused trouble. In Arthurian legend, it is said that he could fight off more than 30 other knights at once, making him one of Arthur’s most valuable allies.

His actions off the field of battle brought about his demise. As part of a long-running family feud between himself and the brothers Sir Gawain, Sir Agravain, Sir Mordred, and Sir Gaheris, Lamorak seduced their widowed mother and bedded her.

Sir Gaheris caught them in the act and is said to have killed his mother on the spot. Gaheris only spared Lamorak because he was unarmed. After rejecting King Arthur’s offer to settle the dispute for them, Lamorak was ambushed by the brothers and murdered.[1] Sources vary as to which brother actually killed Lamorak.

@Magua , it is your pick. See you in 2025 or maybe 2026 for the last pick of the round.

He killed his mom, she must have been packing some heat since he didn’t kill the unarmed dude. Moms was gangsta.

I had to get Michael Ironside in here somewhere. Now that just leaves RANCH to shoehorn in too.

Look at that miserable prick. I love him immeasurably.

@pit I’m off to make a chaos degen build and no one can stop me. Hopefully it doesn’t suck.

It was completely fine once they got it up and running, but I didn't have much time to play because of the delays. My niece is visiting for the holidays, which reminds me --

@Magua or @Captain Dave Poulin or anyone else who might know, we have a 13yo girl visiting who saw the Studio Ghibli hub on Max and wants us all to watch one. Neither my wife nor I know a single thing about them. Any suggestions?

Has she seen one before?

Spirited Away is probably the safest bet — it’s pretty commonly viewed as Miyazaki’s best.

Kiki’s Delivery Service is also a delightful choice given it’s about a 13 year old witch. Ditto Whisper of the Heart, although that involves essentially no fantasy elements and is a straight coming of age story about a teenage wannabe writer. That’s a deeper cut if she’s seen the usual ones.

She has not. Thank you very much as always! She has requested I make pasta from scratch for dinner and we watch all of ours first tonight, so this is what’s happening.

As Magua said, I would go with Kiki’s Delivery Service - it is charming as f***, seriously.

I think you still have to pick, unless I am missing something.

Kiki is probably my favorite warm fuzzy place Ghibli movie (besides Grave of the Fireflies). But Spirited Away is the first one I ever watched, and it's still my favorite movie, Ghibli or otherwise. It's definitely the bolder film in creativity and scope, while still having Ghibli's trademark delicacy. You can't go wrong; you can only go right. Most importantly: you can't only ever watch one.

(I assume a 13 year old would prefer the dubs, and while I'm fussy about everything, the dubs are as high caliber as it gets, and Ghibli prefers their dubs to subs.)

@JojoTheWhale on the other hand, you could also gouge your eyes out with metal chopsticks if you are going to watch a dub of anything.

It’s animation: ALL animation is dubbed. If a high-end studio hires Academy Award level actors to dub an animated film, that’s a different animal than some shitty low budget rush job. These aren’t 90s bootlegs. As I said, Miyazaki himself believes his movies should be watched not read. That’s the artist. There’s a funny story where Miyazaki was so excited Lauren Bacall was dubbing Howl’s Moving Castle that he went to a screening with her.

I am the most anal retentive movie watcher you might ever meet when it comes to the “experience” — I won’t even watch a movie on a laptop — and I swear by every Ghibli dub by Disney/GKIDS. I could nitpick a few performances here or there, but the Kiki’s Delivery Service dub with Kirsten Dunst and Phil Hartman might be the best.

I also swear by bad dubs

No.
