According to capfriendly, we will have 17 mill deadline cap space. So if we get Landy, Val and LOC back, that will leave us with 3 mill cap space if I’m doing the math right

That assumes LOC and Landy's cap hits count and Val's cap hit doesn't exist all year. So if we trade Val before his suspension is up in Nov and run a 21 man roster this season, yeah, $17m at the deadline.

But for a contender is it worth the risk of taking up a roster spot and a somewhat significant chunk of cap for a guy that will likely bail on your during a cup run?

Probably not. I just don't think we should panic. The market for Val will be different on Dec 1 than it is today.

And the funniest aspect in all of this is that a degree of Sabres fans actually like it. This is an ultra mega loss for Buffalo simply because players like McLeod are available on the UFA market every single year.

McLeod is younger, but Colton is more physical and has produced more consistently.

So why not take your chances on a guy with high offensive potential instead of an actual scrub?
