I'm praying for Blake to NOT choose freaking Byram. Call me crazy, but a team that has trouble scoring goals shouldn't be wasting a top-5 pick on a damned defenseman!!!

I struggle with Byram more because I am wondering if he is really a true #1 Dman or if he is just the best of a crop this year that are good but aren't elite? You have several Dmen that all seem bunched up: York, Seider, Soderstrom, Broberg, Haley, Heinola, Bjornfort, Honka and probably Robertson but nobody screams out as the next "It," guy. Last year, it was clear than Dahlin was a #1. He had the label as a can't miss. If Byram is not a true #1 Dman, then you can't pick him that high. That's where the scouting comes in.

The year before, it was Makar and Heiskenan but they weren't guys who had that "Wow," factor. They were taken at 3/4 and then there was a run of 5 in a row at #14-18. That's how it feels right now with Byram and these other players. We will probably see all of the guys I mentioned off the board by Round 2 and they will go in bunches.

I would rather go with the best Forward prospect because we need scorers and then see what Dmen are available with the next #1 pick.

Man, when I look at the scouting reports for Hughes and Kakko, they read like a dream for this team. If I had to choose for today and who is the most likely to come in and light it up early, it would be Kakko. For the longterm it's probably Hughes but you just can't lose with either guy. It's a lot more like McDavid/Eichel in that you are getting a star with either pick than Hischier/Patrick where you are getting a solid player but not a guy who will be a megastar.

I hope the gods smile upon us in this rare opportunity.

I know it's not a great comparison since everything has evolved so much and it's a deep pool but think about 2008:

1. Stamkos
2. Doughty
3. Schenn
4. Bogosian
5. Myers

One wrong move there and we don't win 2 Cups.

I promised my kid Drew today that I'd pull him out of daycare to get ice cream and hit the park. Gonna miss the fireworks but I'll follow up later. For the love of God, please get #1.

Ran the draft stimulator and 7 out of 10 we ended up in fourth. Have mercy.

Meh, I ran it about half dozen times and the Kings came out 1st overall on 3 of the outcomes. We'll see what happens in a few hours.

I mean we basically have a 60% chance to get the 4th or 5th pick, so I'm really trying not to get my hopes up too high.

That’s just opening odds. If Ottawa gets #1, we would have the best odds to land #2 because their balls are gone. The only reason 4th is the highest odds is because you are subtracting the cumulative odds of the other possibilities from 1. Look at it rather from the standpoint that we have the 2nd best odds in the draft.

I ran the simulator 10 times and this is what I got:

1st OA (1)
2nd OA (5)
3rd OA (2)
4th OA (1)
5th OA (1)

Agreed, a defenseman would be rough because they take longer to develop and impact the league, but you have to take the BPA. For all we know, Hughes gets destroyed in the NHL and ends up with Vilardi like injuries and Byram becomes the next Doughty and a key piece in a Stanely Cup contender...

You just never know how things work out and if you draft to your wants over your needs you always end up in trouble. Who knows what would have happened if we had got what we all wanted and ended up with Stamkos in 2008...
