I guess last year didn't happen. No upgrade at the center position equals no improvement for team. For a team that was badly outplayed in a lot of games especially against the better teams down the stretch not sure how you can propose the same players down the middle.
I want to upgrade center as much as the next guy, but its not the whole story for their struggles last year.

They were too easy to play against. Many games they did not look ready to play from puck drop, not ready to work. Not ready to hunt pucks and pressure the opposition. They all too often swung games in the 3rd by not buckling down. It could have been a tie game or they would have the lead and blow it. Adding Goodrow and Blais will make this team a pain in the ass to play against. They will wear other teams down to let our talented players have more room.

I also dont think Drury is done.

I’m kinda interested in this Kempf pick, he’ll be playing at Cornell next year.

I wonder if this pick is a “kudos” to the coaching staff there for the job they did with Barron. Giving them another shot with a player

Nothing personal to those who've posted it, but im sick of seeing this Raty thing be retweeted over and over, about an Isles prospect in a Rangers board

Carp says the Pegulas want to trade Eichel West.

Russo says Minnesota needs Buffalo to take back $10 million in cap commitments.

It's a wonder we haven't seen a trade yet.
I know it's Carp, so it could just be him speculating but I get it. With the gigantic dead cap hits Minny is going to have with the Parise/Suter buyouts for the last 3 years of Eichel's deal, it's no wonder they're trying to send money back.

This is where owners and GM's shoot themselves in the foot. Is Eichel being in the conference, in a different division, really that much of a problem? Is it the optics of Eichel being on the Rangers and regaining his form that bad so they'd prefer to just send him to obscurity (Minnesota)? Idk, I think if they want the Sabres to be best set up for the future they should take the best offer regardless of who the team is.

He’s mad that Drury sighed Goodrow and traded Buch. I didn’t like the value but it is what it is.

You’re worried we’ll be a better team?
I love Buch. Ever since we drafted him and I read his scouting report I became obsessed with following him. I used to watch his KHL games on illegal grainy streams and was counting down the days until he came here and once he was here I was his biggest cheerleader. Then his personality blossomed and he was not only developing into a good player, but a good guy in the room and a lovable figure for the fans. I wanted him here long term. But then we signed the Kreider deal and with all of the young talent specifically on the wings, the writing was on the walls. I think the value was poor in the return for Buch, but I wasn't blindsided by the deal. I was (dreadfully) anticipating a deal even since Kreider signed his extension and then when we won the lottery and got Laf it became even more solidified.

Its not ideal and I'm hopeful for an upgrade but at the same time our young wingers will be better, our D will be better, our bottom 6 will be better, we've gotten grittier and we will likely add another dman all that is improvement.

So Minnesota needs to dump Fiala and Dumba just to fit Eichel under the cap. Basically. Or 1 of them and Rask I guess.

Who’s out there that would be a team that Mika would accept a trade to AND be willing/able to give him his extension?

Ducks?
Vegas is the one team. They can fit Zibanejad without blowing up their team next season, but Smith and Fleury come off the cap after that which should cover Zibanejad's raise.

He hasn't done anything disasterous yet.
Sure he didn't get good value for Buch, which is a red flag, but the team is a better team today than the one that finished the year. Though he could easily screw it all up in the next few days.
The pooch, it’s screwed.
Can it be worse? Oh, of course. But let’s not pretend the last week didn’t happen.

Do they have the ammo to get a Zbad trade done though?

Zibanejad at $10 million per year is just too much. He always has something happening that doesnt see him play a full season. And no Covid isnt his fault, but it doesnt help that he isnt exactly young anymore. He is making $5.350 AAV right now. I offer $8.5 over 5-6 years. If its not enough then move him.

It's a tough call. Do you give him the overpay or move him for futures and/or lesser talent because you want to start competing while your young talent is on ELC's.
