I think the point here is that a load of people have said that what Greig did was a nothingburger and another load of people have said it's some grave sacrilege for some reason. I don't think it's unreasonable for him to have not even thought it was a big deal, or at worst thought it'd end with a Leaf getting in his face or wanting to drop gloves.

Rielly vastly overreacted, and that's not on Greig to have anticipated.

And holy cow, I've really learned that a load of NHLers are really mentally soft if the sight of an opponent shooting hard into an empty net is rage-inducing for them. He didn't intentionally injure an opponent or drop a deuce on the Leafs logo for crying out loud.

This whole thing is as asinine as a pitcher headhunting a batter for having the gall to admire a home run.
Greig has zero hockey sense if he didn't respect a response to him blasting an empty net from ten feet out. Dude is playing in the show. Not saying it's how it should be but it's definitely how it is.

Again, a pretty sizable percentage of people have clearly thought that this was no big deal, and frankly not very many people seem to recall this happening in recent memory. This isn’t some well established taboo. Dude was excited to have a breakaway to seal the game away and took a heavy shot, if there was a thought passing through his head at the moment it probably wasn’t much of one.

And, again, whether or not a reaction was warranted doesn’t matter when Rielly significantly overreacted within a time frame too short for any of us to post a message or tweet. Even if you think Greig was being an annoying punk, that doesn’t mean he remotely deserved a blatant goon job by Rielly.

I’ll take a million showboats, if this even was one, over one cross check to a player’s face.

I've put plenty of blame on Reilly for resorting to chicken shit stick work. That's never okay. He deserves his lengthy suspension.

I promise you anyone who has played will tell you to expect a reaction and I loathe making the if you played the game argument. If Greig really expected no response to that he's brain dead. He knew what he was doing. He's that kinda player. It doesn't make up for Reilly's overreaction.

Sure, but expecting something means a player getting in your face or wanting to drop gloves. Rielly’s fake tough guy **** wasn’t that.

These comments don't agree with each other. I don't care how many people say it was no big deal, a dude playing in the NHL should know it's a big f***ing deal regardless of whether or not it should be. Greig knew. Full stop.

Unwritten rules in baseball are stupid. You still don't stare at a four hundred foot bomb you blasted against some redneck pitcher and not expect the next time up that you're getting drilled.

Yeah they do. A) A load of people didn’t think it was a big deal, and B) even if he knew it was pest work and should expect a fight, that doesn’t mean he should expect a cross check to the face after the play is dead.

So either he didn’t think it was a big deal, and as a result wasn’t expecting a cross check to the face, or he expected some kind of response, but not a cross check to the face because that’d have been an obscene overreaction.

And, let’s say again, who cares about if a reaction was warranted or if he should’ve expected something, when that conversation is in response to a guy basically assaulting another player with his stick and assuredly resulting in an at least 6-game suspension?

Okay… and? The pitcher is a scumbag in that scenario and deserves to be tossed out of the game and suspended in that scenario, too.

However, that side of meatheadedness is at least much more established than this. Can anyone point to an example like this happening any time recently?

A - a load of people are wrong or at the very least wrong about how people in this game view what Greig did.

B - Reilly is a coward who over reacted. Like I ninety something percent agree with you. Reilly is the douche. Greig is either the dumbest mother f***er to play in the show or he's a bit of a punk. They're not mutually exclusive.

Again, you don't do what Greig did. There's not examples of it being a problem but the vast majority of people who have played saw it and were like oof that's gonna be trouble.

I've never seen somebody pop the goalie's water bottle off the top of the cage and then pick it up and take a drink. I promise you it wouldn't be received well.

If I'm a Leaf's fan I'm happy about Reilly overreacting as opposed to doing nothing. You take some Keith stupid chicken shit stick work over him being ambivalent. You're not happy it happened but you get it.

You take the red mist stupid over a guy who doesn't care. Reilly made a mistake. Very dirty play. Very forgivable if he's your guy.

Just saw a video of it, and I imagine it wasn't received well.

Beast of a bar down shot popped the bottle up out of the holder and into the corner and his celly was to pick it up and drink out of it, then throw it over his head back into the corner. He actually skated directly to the penalty box after.

I can’t speak for how everybody views everything, but Rielly defenders (and to be clear, I am not saying you, I hope I’m not coming off as trying to hit you or anything) at least seem the need to be vocal about being okay with what he did or in trying to downplay it, and frankly I don’t think either are a good look. If Rielly got in in Greig’s face or drop gloves or the likes, this wouldn’t be a conversation one way or the other other than a few maybe saying it was a dumb thing to fight over. Hockey’s a violent sport and some violent things are acceptable in it. This wasn’t that, though.

And even if Greig is a dumb punk, all Rielly did was throw his own team under the bus and risk injuring another player because his feelings got hurt. That type of idiocy is way worse for both his team and the game than a pest scoring an empty netter in a perceived wrong way.

Again, you don't do what Greig did. There's not examples of it being a problem but the vast majority of people who have played saw it and were like oof that's gonna be trouble.

That’s much more blatant of a hypothetical than this, though, and even in that case the person most in the wrong would be the one cross checking another player in the face. The only time that is remotely explainable is if it’s in response to an actual rage-inducing moment, like a horrendous dirty hit and the cross checker went ballistic, and even that would warrant a suspension. In response to someone being annoying to some? Nah, not even close.

But, to say again, we’re not talking about some egregious, odiferous, well-understand universal slight here. A dude scored the wrong way on an empty netter to some people, which is an annoyance at most.

Remember a few years back when Matthews did that hand to the ear gesture after scoring on us? That pissed Kane off, and in response he… scored and repeated the gesture. Showboat response to an actual showboat, all good.

There I have to strongly disagree. There are responses, and there are overreactions, and this is the latter. He pulled an idiotic move that’ll hurt his team for at least a half dozen games and might cost them dearly.

This to me seems like such a one-sided player safety issue, too. Throw trash overreactions like this out of the game.

Yeesh, what league? If that happened in the AHL there'd be fifty PIM's about it.

The Leafs are still gonna make the playoffs. It's regular season stupid.

Not necessarily. They’re one point out of third in their division and are tied with the Wings for the two wild card slots with a four point lead on two more teams. If Rielly’s out six, eight, more games, they could easily get a worse matchup or even fallout entirely. Their blue line is suspect enough that his absence for a couple weeks could gravely cost them.

I'd be floored if they miss the playoffs. They lost to the f***ing Habs in the playoffs. They aren't winning shit with or without Morgan Reilly.
