Dallas RE-signed Seguin at an almost $10m AAV back in 19/20 and he’s been a 50-60 point player. Thats unacceptable and he’s had even worse production in the playoffs. Jamie Benn has been better than Seguin for sure but his play hasn’t matched his cap hit either.
Drafting and development is obviously huge for GMs and Front Offices but getting the most out of your cap space is IMHO the single most important thing for a GM. I think we’ve got about 20 years of data to look back on now and it’s plain as day it’s better to let guys walk as UFAs than sign them for huge contracts when they’re 29-30+.
The guy had major hip injury that has clearly affected his career trajectory
He played thru injury which worsened it and had his surgery delayed multiple times because of COVID related delays
Hard to come down on Sequin as "Unacceptable' when reality is he physically is not same guy he was before injury
If finger of blame is to be pointed at any specific players, this postseason then Pavelski and Duchene should be taking heat
They were among the worst players for Stars all postseason. Literally dragged down performance of everyone around them
Benn and Seguin outplayed both them by a mile this postseason. Neither Benn nor Sequin were problems
