He was well on his way to being a true number 1 D before the injuries started. First the concussion in 2010-11 that made him miss half of 11-12 and then the eye injury in 2013.
The argument that he would have ever been a #1 D is, was, and always will be ridiculous. The injuries didn't cause him to become a complete black hole offensively. A #1D plays all situations and is your best option in them all. You show me a coach who ever in his life would have put Marc Staal on his power play when he had 6 live breathing non goalies on his roster and I will show you a coach who needs to stop coaching. The guy is the most overrated player I have ever seen on this board. Even when he flat out sucks, people give him an out. There have been so many players who were better and got treated worse.

Guess Tortorella should’ve stopped coaching in 10-11 when Staal played often on the PP.

Strangely, in the season after that first concussion he had a hard time with offense. Then he was putting up like 0.5 p/g in 2013 before his eye injury, after which his offense really suffered. Strange how not being able to see as well as your contemporaries can affect your performance.

There’s no doubt that the game has passed him by and I’d prefer someone else out there, but the idea that he’s always been bad is completely revisionist history.

I'm guessing they just threw that up on the board bc that was what he got the last time he won the contest.

The actual clock didn't go off in the corner.

Yeah was a symbolic figure for the charity event.

He still got pretty good wood on it though.

You overestimate Greg McKegg.

I watched those games and anyone who ever thought he was going to be a number one D was telling lies from the get go. How many PP points did he have? Because I don't remember many at all. The idea that Tortorella put him out there doesn't sell me either, because it was more likely some twisted way to send a message to a guy who should have been put there instead if faith in Marc. He could play with a push broom and contribute the same he does now offensively. Nothing. Which has pretty much always been the case.
