NHL 24 Discussion

Hitting and playing defense is much harder now, for some reason it's significantly harder to hit with skill stick than with the buttons. I don't like how stuff is mapped to buttons now, feels like a step backward and makes it an awkward hybrid controls experience. I like some of the new hitting animations as well as goalies making desperation saves. But goalies are too shitty now and hitting is too difficult now.

The pressure system is definitely not just a graphic overlay of a feature they already had as some thought it might've been, it's definitely a new system. It's a good idea but is a bit too OP right now, I wonder if they could make it so holding the puck, specifically players on offense holding the puck far out from their bodies; does not lead to draining the defending teams energy. Because I've noticed several guys I've played against just holding the puck far away from their bodies so you can't check them and draining my energy. In real life it isn't so easy to just hold the puck away from your body and keep control like that, they should have to be more actively involved in the offense passing back and forth and generating shots, in order to up the pressure.

The line changes are absolutely horrible, you can't be skating while changing on the fly because that would require taking your thumb off the left analogue stick to use the arrow buttons to change lines.

Controversial take but I actually like the lacrosse move being easier to do, it's very easy to do IRL. Any beginner hockey player could learn to do it within an hour of practise, children do it all the time. There's no way a deke should be infinitely harder to do in a video game than it is in real life, which is how it was in NHL 23. My entire time playing NHL 23 I have NEVER seen a person pull it off whether it's Chel or Versus. I've pulled it off once in a game on 24 so far. Perhaps they could make it slightly harder to actually score with but it should absolutely remain just as easy to scoop it up at least, because in real life it is that easy. I hope the people who hate the lacrosse move don't fill the EA feedback boards with complaints to get it nerfed again. I don't think they should change a thing regarding the lacrosse move.

I've wanted the button pass guide where you can press different buttons to pass to different players for the longest, but it should come up quicker. Perhaps have it auto rather than only triggered by holding down the button to bring it up. If people don't like it they can turn off the auto and trigger it with a button, but I'd sacrifice the aesthetics of having the button commands pop up in order to be able to make quick passes to the player I want to.

I also hate the idea of removing 6's & 3's replacing it with a 1 period 3's game, and forcing you to join a club match instead. Found it very hard to find games of 6's, hopefully that's just because not many people got the codes.

I notice more glitch goals than in 23. I scored 9 goals in a HUT game and still lost when he scored 11 goals on my shitty goalie.

I'm someone who doesn't complain about the gameplay of previous games that much, I didn't mind the gameplay of 23. What I hate is the lack of detail in Be a Pro & GM, the fact that there are no face sliders for player customization, just how bare bones the game is. But this is the first game in a while where I actually disliked the gameplay as well.

Now this could be because it's the biggest change in gameplay yet, I've only played it about 4 hours. It may take more getting used to. I do like some of the ideas, but so far I'm not impressed with the gameplay.

I hate to be so negative but I've gotta call it like I see it:

Whoever recommended they change the goalie settings needs to be fired. As far as the pros go: Desperation saves feel a lot easier and I do like the new animations they added quite a bit. It does feel a bit easier to make saves if you're in position, but positioning itself is the biggest problem. It's so damn difficult to position yourself now because your goalie retreats back to the goal line once you let go of the left stick; it feels extremely counterintuitive. It was much easier to play angles because you didn't have to worry about holding the left stick the entire time. If you try and hold it, you're moving too much and it's way more difficult to move from side to side. I can't challenge shots and anticipate passes properly anymore because I have to worry about holding the left stick the whole time. It feels completely different in the worst way possible. If they fix the positioning, playing goalie could actually be pretty awesome, I like the instinct setting and the new animations. But if they don't fix the positioning, it's unplayable and I'll have no reason to buy this game.

Outside of that, idk if it's just for the ps4 or test run but the menu screen moves so slowly it stresses me out. It takes 2-3 seconds just to move to another menu screen.

As far as the gameplay, I do think the offensive zone pressure is an interesting enough idea, but besides that, I'm finding it hard to enjoy playing very much. It's almost impossible to hit players with the skill stick and poke-checking is very difficult. I miss being able to protect the puck with the x button because when you hold the right stick to protect, it slows you down and feels awkward. Maybe it's just a learning curve though so I'll give it more time. On the bright side, it is easier to one time shots and the AI does a better job of getting open for passes from what I can tell.

I'm gonna try and play HUT and WoC (as a forward) a bit more to get a better feel for the game. But as a goalie, this game is absolutely unplayable.

We haven't had a good complete NHL game in over a decade, were allowed to voice criticism on a franchise that deserves it, not all of us are blind sheep.

Video game made for kids? Really?
With Ultimate Team in all of EA sports games they should be rated M with a danger warning for spending if anything the kids should stay away from games like this.

I thought this game was supposed to be 70 dollars. Am I missing something here.

I see it as $69 for the X|S/ PS5 for the standard version of the game

The $89/99 ones have extra options included:
  • Base Game
  • HUT Power Up Icon Choice Pack
  • WOC Battle Pass XP Modifier (X5)
  • Dual Entitlement
  • 3-Days Early Access
  • 4,600 NHL Points
  • Exclusive Cale Makar Player Item
  • *LIMITED TIME OFFER*: Pre-order by September 25 and receive a HUT Team Building Player Choice Pack (2 of 32) plus pre-order content!

Signed up for the play test and got diddly. Even reaching out to players on Twitter when they post they have codes to give away, but still got nada.

Appreciate everyone's feedback/reactions on here so far.
I can barely find games with more than 2 people per side so it’s puzzling they’re saying they have codes to give away but players can’t get them when the population is so low

Yep. And the teammates I've found so far are the ones that don't know how to pass, play positional hockey or utilize their teammates.

The HUT games I've found are against guys that feel that griefing is absolutely necessary. Puck-ragging is alive and well in versus and now there's a pressure meter that makes it even more effective.

if you can’t turn off the auto reposition in netminder mode, that is going to SUCK.
I don't think anything is more infuriating than getting the message in franchise mode about them auto updating your trade block and sometimes they stealth do it mid seasons. It's a total PITA to set it back.

Oh yeah, there are a lot of stealth moves the CPU makes even when you have coaches lines and etc set to manual.

It would just be nice to be able to watch actual games as a scout kind of like when you had the options to play the CHL red vs white game for the upcoming draft players. For players you scout you could watch those players in their leagues whenever they played to see how they skate, when the shoot, what situations they shoot in. Time consuming I’m sure but even if they just gave you a full read out of the players hits shots face offs etc would be awesome.

Hitting in the beta is BAD. They need to recalibrate the Ozone rag meter, it's broken. Happy to see you can actually score on a shot from the slot this year so far.

So I'm actually enjoying the gameplay quite a bit as far as hut goes. That's one part of the game I can see myself going back to if I'm gonna buy the game. If they patch the goalie settings like I said in my last post, I might just buy the game. I'm of course disappointed that be a pro hasn't been fixed but the gameplay itself doesn't seem too terrible to me.

I already can’t go back to NHL 23. But I can’t play the NHL 24 playtest without being annoyed now.

I was having an amazing time in HUT online but now I am constantly against super teams of McDavid Draisaitl MacKinnon Matthews Makar Fox Vas etc etc..

Not a huge fan of the new skill stick but I’m sure I’ll get used it. The hitting is whack (Gaudreau can smash big guys now) but more fun and better than last year.
I don’t like the Lacrosse deke goal button but whatever.

The net front goals have felt really good. My glitch goals aren’t working so I’m having to try new stuff and having fun.

When I heard that in the trailer, I thought it was a bad idea from the rip. Good to know it's a bad idea in execution as well.
I typically am a trash tender and this change has been amazing and intuitive for me. Hopefully they keep both control schemes

In NHL 23 I play 80% of the time in Franchise mode and 20% in Online Versus. I’m king of the shit online (55% W/L.. only seem to beat lower rated folk) but I still think I’m good at the game.

They made hitting really difficult. It’s all going to be poke check spam. The goalies fatigue too quickly so that they become exhausted after just a couple shots. That could be an easy tune. Overall the game is definitely better than 23. Great step in the right direction.

Would’ve liked to spend more time playing against actual people in chel but it was always a long wait and then 2 vs 2 99% of the time, kinda hard to get a feel and give feedback when you can’t find games to play

Is it more difficult to poke check now?
No, upon more play I've learned to adapt defensively. Still hard to hit though, except hip check is easier. I've played against one guy who spammed hip check constantly, basically just skated around holding down the hip check button so his guys are skating around hunched over until they hip check you. Annoying
