Yeah it's weird. Some people experience it and others don't. In one drop-in game I tried, me and one teammate were getting the lag while another teammate wasn't.

Open the following ports on your router for your 360:

Xbox LIVE requires the following ports to be open:

Port 88 (UDP)

Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)

Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

Port 80 (TCP)

If you don't know how, google will show you the way.

If you go to your router, and get both the manufacturer and model number, then you should try opening these ports on your router.

It's really easy - as a relative noob when it comes to networking, I managed to open my ports for CoD and NHL.

Here, follow it here: http://portforward.com/

On the top left, input both your router brand and model number and follow the instructions - your best bet is to plug directly into your wireless router if possible; it's a 2 minute job and it will likely improve your experience

That's strange, I'm on the 360 as well and I haven't had very much trouble with lag in EASHL - club and drop-in.

Yeah it's weird. Some people experience it and others don't. In one drop-in game I tried, me and one teammate were getting the lag while another teammate wasn't.

In drop in games it is noticeably slower for me. Not sure if I would call it lag, it just is slow. EASHL is fine for me the majority of the time.

In my HUT mode I entered a tournament online.

The score was 1-1 and my opponent shot at my goalie from the side. Right when the puck hit the goalie, the picture switched to a face of in the middle, like after a goal.,

Except we didn't see a goal, no goal sound, no red light and the announcers didn't say anything about a goal..

Strangest thing is I was awarded the goal that never was!!

Has this happened to any of you?

So I was playing Be-A-Pro with a 6'2" player then noticed he looked quite small next to two teammates.

Turns out they were 6'8" / 228lbs and 6'10" / 230lbs.

What is this.

This is still confusing to me. I don't understand what I'm doing.

LOL! Ok. I was going to private message you but figured I'd throw it in here in case other people were having the same/similar issues. If you are having no issues, I still highly recommend you do it, especially if you have an inconsistent connection.

So here it goes:

Basically, think of your internet like a highway. Except this highway has thousands upon thousands of lanes, going in both directions (two and from your computer and your router). Your router's job is to ensure that information goes back and forth on all of it's highways, relatively equally - so if you have two or more computers, your router kicks in and says "Ok, I'm going to make sure that I send all my data evenly throughout the lanes on these 3 highways". Each highway can be considered a port - so each highway, or port, has it's own number, just like in real life - Highway 401, Highway 27, Highway A4, etc.

What port forwarding does, is basically says - "STOP!" And tells your router pretty much this: "Screw that even distribution crap. I've got NHL 13 here, and it's sort of a big deal, so I need to make sure that I get as much information down my personal highway as possible; don't worry about the other ones". By opening up a port, you are essentially doing two things:

1) You are telling your router to focus on your particular highway

2) You are trying to maximize your router's usage of that highway so that it uses the most lanes available.

So how do you do it?

It's a little complicated, but that's where our friends at www.portforwarding.com come in and help us.

In your house

Your setup is probably something like this:

Modem from your Internet Service Provider (Rogers/Bell/AT&T/Verizon/etc) -------> Wireless Router (Brand X/D-Link/Linksis/etc) -------(wireless)---> Playstation/Xbox 360.

What you need to do is connect to your router (either wirelessly, or preferrably, hardwired), with a laptop or desktop. From there, you need to know what brand your router is, and what model number it is as well (all that info is CLEARLY labelled on your router).

From there, once you are connected to your router, go to portforwarding.com, on the left hand side put in both your router brand and model number, and follow the on-screen instructions for how to open your ports. It's really simple with the use of the site - just make sure that once you input your model number and brand, that you select the correct type of ports you are looking for (PLAYSTATION NHL 13, OR XBOX 360 NHL 13).

The steps that the above mentioned website will make you take, will likely involve the following:

1st - log into your router's default page (it will show you how to do that, but normally it's by the router's gateway IP - 192.168.0.1.. don't worry if that sounds too technical, it isn't).

2nd - Log in to your router (it will ask for a username and password. If you don't have one/don't know what it is, the default is normally Admin and no password (blank).

3rd - Go to the WIRELESS SETUP portion of your router settings.

4th - Go to PORT FORWARD under your wireless setup.

5th - Input the number(s) of the ports you want to open (ports are identified by numbers, and those numbers will be provided to you from the website provided you follow it properly).

6th - Save settings, and re-boot your router; both of these steps will likely be done by your router by itself. Just be aware that it will likely mean that you will be disconnected from the internet for about 60 seconds. Don't be alarmed! lol

That should take care of it. For what it's worth, I always do port forwarding for all NHL and CoD games that I play. I find that it marginally improves my connection, especially in CoD where your connection plays a HUGE part in how well you perform.

Give it a shot. If you have any issues, feel free to private msg me - it took me a hell of a long time to figure this stuff out but I did it on my own and I'm not a techy so if I can do it, you can do it:)

I still believe it's something on EA's side that they need to fix. My other games play fine online, even shootouts on NHL 13 are fine. This issue only occurs in drop-in/Eashl.

In Be A GM-mode, why does every player drafted by at team show up in AHL? Even those who play in Europe IRL?

I don't want all my prospects in my AHL-team. Is there a way to fix this?

Pretend your European prospects are still in Europe (Chances are they're not good enough to get ice time in the AHL anyway) or just don't sign them yet.

Can somebody explain to me how the prospect system works?

If I have a guy 22 years old 69 overall with 4 star medium potential, is he closer to busting or reaching his potential?
What do I do with this player? Keep him in the minors? Put him on my NHL team and hope he jumps to 77-80+ overall by next season?

Is there a point in signing 3 star medium potential 19 year old 58 overall players to entry level contracts? these guys never seem to go past 65 overall.

In general, players between 21-24 with 3.5 or 4 star medium potential, between 65-70 overall are considered bad prospects or good ones?

What's the deal with current NHL players peaking at 84-85 overall but prospects and made up players reach mid 80's by the time they are 22-23? Changes the dynamic of the league within 2 years of beagm. First season, an 84 overall player is considered one of the best on the team, by the 4th beagm season, 4th liners have 82 overall.

And what's the deal with Shea Weber having 95 overall slapshot power but a 6th round pick Dman under 6 feet tall and 179 pounds 62overall has 99 slapshot power and wristshot power?

can ea ever get anything right with this game?

Honestly the only joke in this game is passing. You can't be creative what so ever, it feels clunky and terrible. And the AI for me so far has been terrible.

I still believe it's something on EA's side that they need to fix. My other games play fine online, even shootouts on NHL 13 are fine. This issue only occurs in drop-in/Eashl.

In shootouts, you are only connecting to one other peer, and more often than not the game is going to be hosted by your internet connection.

In Drop-in/EASHL, you are connecting to potentially 11 other peers, and you probably aren't pulling host unless you have a strong upload speed and a consistent connection. That means that if you are lagging in drop-in/EASHL games, it's likely because your connection isn't able to communicate with the host connection properly, or without their being a significant ms ping lag.

In order to fix this, either open up the relevant ports on your router, or try and move your setup closer to your wireless router.

Just based on what you've explained though, it sounds like an issue you are having with your setup, not the other way around (not an issue with the host or with EA servers).

I'll do my best to answer your question. Apologies in advance if this gets a little long.

EA Sports have done their best to make potential and player development far more random and influented by many more things than just purely potential rating and ice time, which seemed to be the case in NHL 12.

First - the star system - There are 2 things governing your player's growth. First is the star system. Player potential is indicated on a 5-star scale which you've clearly figured out. The other thing, is the "accuracy" of the star system, indicated by the color of the stars.

Green - highly accurate; player will achieve that potential if developed properly.

Gold - somewhat accurate; player possibly might achieve that potential if developed properly, but there's no guarantees.

Red - risky; pretty unlikely that the player will reach that potential unless a lot of things work out for him.

The best example I can probably give as a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, is Luke Schenn. When Schenn came into the league, everyone was convinced he was going to be a top shut down Dman. He's struggled, and eventually was traded, and now people aren't so sure what he's going to become.

Now - Is Schenn going to be an elite Dman? No, definitely not. So he's not a 5-star player. Can he be a very good shut down Dman in this league? Absolutely. 4-star? 4.5 star? I'd say 4.5 star Dman.

However - is it a sure fire thing that Schenn is going to become that type of player? There's a good chance, especially now that he's out of Toronto. But it's not a guarantee as compared to say, a Drew Doughty becoming a stud. Therefore, it's probably not a green-accuracy potential, but a gold one.

So what should Schenn's potential system be in NHL 13? Somewhere between 4 and 4.5 gold, imo. I think that's what Schenn is.

Second - Play time vs Player role Similar to NHL 12, in order to allow your prospects to develop and fulfill that potential it's important that they actually play games and get good ice time. One of the more difficult things to determine in NHL 13, is whether to play a player in the NHL vs the AHL. Here's what it comes down too:

Player role plays a huge role in player development this time around. For example, a depth forward, is a player that is likely going to benefit from playing in the bottom 6 positions of your NHL team. Minor league top 6 etc., they speak for themselves. I've found that in order to properly allow your players to develop, you NEED to be playing them in roles within your organization that are either: equivalent or above their listed player roles.

Playing a depth forward in your top 6 is OK, but it's heavily related to age. Younger players will do fine playing in those roles (17-22). Above that age though, it appears as though players really struggle to grow unless they are played in their role or slightly above it (ie. a depth forward on the 2nd line). One thing that NEVER seems to work is taking a high potential player (a 5-star green) who is outside that age bracket (24, 25, etc), and put him on your top line despite him being a depth forward.

So I guess the rule is this:
If they are young, go ahead and play them in their role or one that exceeds it. You shouldn't have a problem.

But

If they are slightly older, go ahead and play them in their role or one that marginally exceeds it for best growth.

Remember - NHL experience > AHL experience, but getting the most ice time >> anything else.

***The big finding that I found is this - team success has a HUGE influence on how well players develop. If you are a team that tanks and tanks and tanks, unlike in NHL 12, your players will not grow and develop the same way. In NHL 12 - you could simply fill your roster with all high potential players and know that within a year or two, you would have a superstar squad. That doesn't work anymore. It seems that players can tolerate losing for a while, but on the whole, in order for them to achieve their potential, they need to be in a winning environment - making it to the playoffs, winning a round etc.

Third - Team success; surrounding your team with success, will breed success. That's why, if you have the money to do so, it's always a good idea to go ahead and overpay a bit for that NHL-caliber goalie to start for your minor league team. At least give your minor league team a chance to make the playoffs and succeed, especially if you have players down there that need the games.

I'm doing a Columbus GM where we didn't make the playoffs in any of the first 3 years, and I noticed that some of my high potential players really started to level off development because of it, until my 4th year, where I made the playoffs, and they all experienced a big jump in overall. Additionally, all of my minor league teams from all of my GMs make the playoffs and normally win a round or two, which means that my minor league development is really impressive - always have guys knocking on the door of the main roster at season's end, and at the very least provide me with great trade assets.

I do hope that clears it up.

In regards to some of the specific questions that you asked:

"22 year old, 69 overall, 4-star potential". The next few years are crucial for him. If he doesn't hit 78-80 by the time he's 24 or 25, then you have a dud there. So your best bet would be to play him wherever he gets the most ice time, but be prepared to offer him NHL experience here and there to further that development.

"19 year old, 59 overall, 3-star potential". Naa, leave him. The most he will get to is a mid-70 overall player, which you don't really need to be honest - those types of players can be had rather easily in free agency to fill out your bottom 6 positions, OR any draft picks/prospects that are already in your organization that don't pan out, can take those spots.

"Shea Weber slap shot vs prospect" - much like in real life, certain prospects might have huge strengths in specific areas of their game, but aren't great players overall because they are rather limited.

In my 4th or 5th year of Columbus Be a GM, I drafted a power forward named Roger Mann first overall, and he was a 72 overall, but all his shooting and passing categories were 85-88. He puts up points by the bucket load, but he is HORRENDOUS defensively (worst +/- on the team by a country mile, and was first or second in PIM through poor discipline). I'm not sure EA has done anything wrong by adding that sort of uncertainty into the game

Has anyone tried using custom music for their Hockey Ultimate Team? I've tried everything to get it to work but it never does! It always defaults to the EA trax no matter what I do. The music works fine for every other team except Ultimate Team. Is it just bugged out or is there a way to get it to work?

Anyone else have the issue in GM Connected that when trying to connect to a game, it just says "Connection lost" or "Could not connect to player" depending on if you're hosting or not..? At first I could play fine against everyone, now suddenly I can't connect to half of the people.

Two years ago I promised myself that I would never again buy a EA NHL game. There are sooo many stupid errors in that game it's ridiculous. Yet, I was stupid enough to buy it again this year. I figured that the errors would surely have been fixed by now with EA having TWO FULL YEARS to work on them. Yet, freaking unbelieveably, it's the same crap again.

Many things have already been mentioned. Drafting 1st overall Jürgen Washington out of North Korea. Why is North Korea even made an option??? Find someone who speaks Danish, German, Norwegian, etc. and ask them to write a hundred common first and family names and come up with an engine that mixes them together. I was able to sign Joel Armia with Washington in my GM mode right at the start, even though he should be Buffalo property. Then I went to the creation zone to correct it, and his Pro team was correctly set to be Buffalo. Then I started a new GM mode and I could sign him again with another team. Many Euro players have wrong clubs (like Frederik Andersen has not been tranfered from Frölunda to NA yet), players missing in the juniors, etc. How freaking difficult can it be to find some student aid with hockey interest to correct this??? To go through the rosters one by one. When I sign a free agent goalie he appears in the minors. When I want to call him up the roster is full. When I want to make space by sending the two-way back up goalie down it says I have too few goalies. WHY CAN'T THEY JUST TRADE PLACES THEN??? Why did you remove the sign in roster moves that says if a player is a healthy scratch? Why remove something that is good?? And then you have the nerve to brag about making 150 new custom faces?! I don't care about the stupid faces when they play for the wrong teams!! This is pure lazyness EA! You could easily fix all this if you bothered to!

Then there are the trades, the waivers, the draft. You are ten years behind other sports games with this!! Fine that you keep trying to improve the playing part of the game, but you REALLY need to completely re-do everything not related to the on ice game.

And this is just GM stuff, you didn't write anything about the problems of Be a Pro in your rant.

I find it's far too easy to get drafted #1 overall, I simmed a whole season of goalie 3 times even with the messages saying I was "calling it in" I still went #1 overall every time. You should have to actually play to get drafted high. Then when I get to pre season they tell me they are sending me down, yet I am starting in the NHL on opening night? I've already done several rants on the actual gameplay of goalie mode so I won't bother again.

On to skater be a pro. When you come on the ice the puck gets stuck by the boards and everyone just stands there until you go get it, this happens at least 5 times a game, how did EA miss this? I'm convinced they don't actually look at this mode beyond the menus. When you come on the ice the coach takes you off after a whistle every time, even if you were only on for 2 seconds.

Once you make the NHL the GM always seems to trade away all the team's good players. What is the point of the request trade feature, if the GM will never actually trade you? You always have to "prove yourself" apparently.
