Next Year’s Lineup

So I’m done rehashing the mess this ended up being and ready to look forward.

this is what I see for us next year so far:

Amirov. Matthews. Marner
Robertson Tavares. Nylander
Mikheyev. Kerfoot
Engvall. Brooks

Reilly. Brodie
Muzzin. Holl
Sandin Liljegrin

Campbell


Is Amirov ready? Do we lose Dermott in expansion? 2 forwards and a goalie with approx 10 mil space. Spezza wants back so maybe that’s one for cheap. Hyman? Do we get a backup goalie or look at a better starter?

Simmonds? Bogosian? I liked what they brought....is there room?

Just some thoughts to hopefully give me something to look forward to lol

I wouldn't bring back any of the UFA's other than Spezza unless Hyman takes a sweatheart deal (Anderson signed to be the replacement in house) and Liljegren/Sandin/Robertson should get the start of a regular 82 game season to show they belong full time.

Leaves you anywhere from $13-16M to upgrade at 3C/3RW and Holl's spot on RD.

edit: I worry its too much of the same.....way too soft. Needs a serious reshape

I would like to see Spezza, Hyman, Bogosian and one of Thornton or Simmonds back... depending on cost.

Spezza should come in at 750k (new league minimum), Hyman hopefully under 5 or 5 max, Bogosian at the same rate? What was that 1.1 (nope, $1.2)?

For goaltending I think you can live with Campbell as the starter, but we need a solid backup that can safely play 25 games... no idea who that is... Freddie @ 2.5 mil haha.

I don't know about our young players, they are all small, weak, skilled guys... we kinda have that angle covered don't we?

One of Kerfoot or Dermott are gone to the Kraken (still hate that name), so that will drive some of the moves that need to be made. If we lose Kerfoot, I would consider Foligno provided he is healthy... maybe, on the fence on that.

That's an awful looking lineup (I'm not saying your wrong, as we are proper screwed).

I think this fanbase severely overrates Robertson. I doubt Amirov makes the team. And all of Dubas' draft picks (won't have to worry for the next couple of years) are the same person wearing a different name on their jersey.

I don't believe Dubas drafts nearly as well as most fans believe. A good indicator is if Dom Lyzsyzsychsyzzyzhn, Mirtle, Pronman and all the advanced stats gurus love your draft, you've had a mare.

We bet on the NHL landscape changing, and it didn't. We now have very few options going forward.

The NHL landscape will be changing though, the Flat cap plus the diluting of talent available with another expansion team. How that sways future moves we'll have to see but it will change how teams fill in rosters. Also I think when the cap finally does move up it might move up like 5mil in one year so that will throw things around as well, it will be interesting just to see how teams react in the next few years. The Leafs have money for scouting so they will have to take shots at College and Euros, keep it rolling and you might get some talent out of it.
 
Why would people still put Marner and AM together. They need to spilt up to spread the offence. If their individual stats drop, who cares, it is winning in the playoffs that matters.

I think Kerfoot will be expose and be pick up by Seattle.
Andersen won’t come back, so there’s about 8.5mil to play with.
Would resign Gally, Bogo and Spezza all for the same one mil or less. Will give a bit more for Bogo if needed.
Resign Big save Dave as backup for 1.5mil since Campbell is only making 1.6mil.
Give Hyman a 2mil raise to 4.25mil for 5 yrs.
That would leave 5mil and hopefully that’s enough to convince both Nick and Nash to come back.

I’m all in favour of spreading the offence around but Keefe is a moron who would rather load up his top lines and make them easy to shutdown

Oh yeah, didnt put much thought into lineup just positions really. TBH im all for trading Marner if we get a fair return. I like Bogo too but Im not sure at the expense of who? Holl maybe? Its time we played Lily
 
For those who played Hockey or coach hockey.
Is it difficult to have different lines playing different styles like your top line play a more skill possession game and then your third line play a more dump and chase game, all due to having the right players for the style. Always want to ask that.

I still think Petan or Malgin could carve out a spot but they absolutely have to start scoring on their chances if they want to have an NHL career. I highly doubt they make it next year though.

Nobody else really of note. With a full 82 game schedule we have to get Sandin and Liljegren NHL games. If we need to upgrade the 5/6 spot at the deadline there are plenty of depth guys always available.

I'm less confident Robertson will be able to hold on so I'd worry about LW as well.

I'd take a run at Hamilton or take a shot at a Jones bounceback year with Muzzin if Jarmo is willing to move him.

is a really solid top 4 that can shelter the kids if need be. If they excel you can roll 3 pairs at times to avoid playing Rielly 25 minutes every night.

I meant to ask out of all NHLers.

for example, I think prime Roberts and Jumbo would be great with AM as both are physical and can hold on to the puck. Roberts can dig out pucks and Jumbo could pass. Plus both of them could score too

Strict 4th line minutes. If anyone thinks we lost because of either of those two guys, take a deep breath. We didn't.

I still like some of what each of them bring... but, especially for Thornton, he was put in a posiiton to not succeeed and that is on Keefe. Hoping he learned from that. I also feel if Simmonds doesn't get hurt his time with us is very different... We're going to need at lesat 3 guys on this roster to be at or near the league minumum... Spezza is one...

Kind of hope we’re willing to experiment a little more with what we have on offense next year. I wouldn’t be opposed to trying Tavares on the wing with Matthews and Marner and running a Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander second line (assuming Hyman walks in FA).

Honestly Matthews and Marner together are way too soft of a line. Any team playing the leafs essentially walk into the second series at full health.

Dubus is probably right that the NHL is trending into a soft skills game but he’s a decade too early. It wouldn’t surprise me if he pivots to ice some beast of defenceman like habs did
 
It’s pretty much expected that Foligno will go resign with Columbus right? He has no interest in being here longer term
