I would sign right up for prime Messier at 1C but I think the nasty, in-your-face captain is extinct. We can like it or not like it, but the whole sport has evolved to be more laid back. Guys don't want to be screamed at anymore.

Toews isn't like that. Crosby isn't. McDavid isn't. O'reilly is a Lady Byng winner. Tavares is a f***in nerd and has captained two organizations. Tampa's captain was gone the whole Cup run.

I just want a guy that brings his own game consistently. That sets the tone for him to be able to ask others to do the same. That's why I liked Zibanejad. I thought he was over his hiccups. He followed it up with the biggest hiccup he's ever had.

You could set your watch by Panarin. The only reason I'm not behind him is because English is a major issue.

I like that Trouba has taken initiative in the room but he's a bit of an all-over-the-place player on the ice for my taste.

I do see the compete issues, but I'm more inclined to lay that at the feet of the coach. They get paid to address that. Players get paid to play. This isn't soccer or the NFL where captains have a distinct role in policing the formation. They take shifts like everyone else.

People say Miller is too calm. Miller sticks out to me because he's calm. He's a constant.
