No way would I give a C to Mike so that it would mess with his mojo. I would give a "C" to somebody who I wouldn't be afraid it would mess with their success.
I know people joke about DeAngelo being the C but he is the one player on our team who just has so much swagger & attitude, I think he would totally elevate his game and wouldn’t be phased by it

I don’t get why Panarin never gets any consideration in these threads. He has an Ovi-like bigger than life personality, even though he is by far the most skilled player on our team he probably still has the best work ethic of anybody, Torts called him one of the hardest working players in the NHL. He is the embodiment of determination and rising above all obstacles, had to overcome more than pretty much any player in the league.

He grew up so poor that his hockey equipment was stuff his grandpa found in a dumpster outside of a hockey rink; his skates were so big that he had to wear his shoes inside of the skates, his gloves were made by his grandma from the leather of a boot. He had to take a train alone to play hockey because it wasn’t accessible in the mining town he lived in and it was so dangerous his grandma would sew his money into his clothing so when he was routinely shook down by thugs they wouldn’t steal it. He had to try out for this team where if he didn’t make it he would go back home and become a miner for the rest of his life, his life is literally a Hollywood movie. When he made that team is when he finally got proper equipment, he was also very undersized. Then he went undrafted, and now today is the second highest paid player in the NHL.

He has the most amazing backstory in the league and he’s such a great guy, has an infectious personality, he’s always smiling from ear to ear, doing crazy cellys & weird dances. He loves the spotlight, thrives under pressure & rises to the big stage. I love Mika but he strikes me as a timid & meek guy, I don’t get why it’s as if Rangers media & Twitter have been pushing for him to be C so strongly. I’ve never seen anyone other than Panarin & Ovechkin have so much pure joy & fun playing the game. As long as he can communicate well enough with the refs, I think he’s the no brainer choice. He’s the face of our franchise.

to me there are only 2 options here...mika or kreider.

my rangers fan PTSD says give it to Kreider and let mika and panarin worry about scoring and don't add more pressure on mika. although I do think that we tend to exaggerate the negative impact the C has had on guys, and not knowing him in the locker room we really can't judge how it will impact him. you never know how a guy will the pressure until he is in the situation but hindsight being 20/20 it really isn't shocking that guys like leetch and mcdonagh didn't thrive in the role given their personalities. but the unknown is how mika's personality might handle it...

as for the As, obviously the other will get an A and staal will keep the A until he is gone after next year...post-staal I'd keep an A on fast IF he is still here...if he's not then Panarin likely gets it. I've also always been partial to having 4 A's rotating 2 at home and 2 on the road because thats what the 94 team did but that is dependent on what veterans are on the team. I could see someone like Fox wearing a letter down the road but its too soon to give them to kids like that

It's Mika. If his games goes down because of the C it's because he isn't the player the we all think he is right now.
BTW, the Rangers organization is pumping this up for a year now, Kreider extension could derail this plan but I don't think it will.

What if the Rangers went with home/away C's?

Home games Mika gets the C, away CK gets the C. Carolina did this a couple years ago with Staal and Faulk as alternating C's.

No I don't advocate for this lol, but teams have done it in the past--and we all seem torn between two candidates.

I don't care so long as they go with a firm 1C 2A system. Please no more rotating nonsense. I feel like half the roster has worn an A at some point.

Why is Marc Staal never in consideration for a captain? He is basically the oldest non-goalie player on the team and has been here for 13 seasons.

He was when McD was moved. These last couple seasons, as it became clear NYR will ride out his deal but not extend him, people moved their speculation elsewhere.
Me, i really prefer it not be Zib, let he and Bread be the public face of the team but don't complicate his situation with the C.
I will always suspect it contributed to undermining McD's development as league top top D-man.
Kreider, i guess.

If re-signed Strome maybe. But i'd be glad to swap him for hig upside youth.

I know he got only 1 season left on the contract. It really doesn't matter. I am just curious what is it about Staal that for last few seasons he wasn't a serious candidate to be the captain?

Maybe he isn't really a leader. Leadership is not something you can spot on TV. It's something that evolves naturally in the room when the cameras are switched off. It's something that's visible during practice, training camp, pre-season, team meetings etc.

The Rangers did not make Staal the next captain when he had 3 years left, so it's safe to assume he did not showcase what they were looking for in those areas.

It's also possible Zibanejad doesn't tick the right boxes either. We simply don't know. Time will tell.

Unpopular opinion. Who cares? We as Ranger fans have imbued this decision with an insane amount of importance because of the deserved reverence for Mark Messier. Realistically, the leaders are the leaders and should be regardless of a letter on their chest.
