I would look at it more as Gorton doing what it takes to get his guy.

Oh, and btw, Hakstol got 10M over 5 years with Philly, basically the same contract.

Well I stand corrected on my hakstol comment then.

But my points remain.

Uh, any consideration for the fact that maybe, just maybe, he/his agent is good at negotiating...?

It happens all the time. It's pretty much a go to tactic for college football coaches. Nick Saban was on his way to Texas a few years ago before U of A basically gave him ownership to the entire state of Alabama.

Regarding Quinn's record at BU, what did people expect?

He was there five years. In each of his most recent four seasons, he coached the team to .600+ hockey and made the tournament each year. His teams won the Hockey East tournament in both 2015 and 2018 (you know, this year). And here were his results in the Frozen Four:

  • 2015: his 1 seed BU team beat the 4 seed, Yale, in round one, the 2 seed, Minnesota-Duluth, in round two, the Western Bracket winner, UND, in round three, and lost to the Eastern Bracket winner, Providence, in the final.
  • 2016: his 3 seed BU team lost to the 2 seed, Denver, in round one (the one year his squad got truly smoked, losing in the first round by the score of 7-2).
  • 2017: his 2 seed BU team beat the 3 seed, UND, in round one (in 2 OT) and lost to the 1 seed, Minnesota-Duluth, in round two (in OT).
  • 2018: his 4 seed BU team beat the 1 seed, Cornell, in round one and lost to the 2 seed, Michigan, in round two.
Would I have liked to have seen one national championship, maybe one more second round win? Sure. But that's a pretty friggin' good record.

If Montgomery loses in the final in 2017 (which his team won 3-2) and Quinn wins the final in 2015 (which his team lost 4-3), which coach is the guy who's "just a good recruiter"?

Yep. Quinn is a very good pick.

I don't mind. Fresh face with a new opportunity. I like what he's done at BU.

Hope it works out.

The FO has really done everything that they said they were going to do. The transparency and accessibility from the guys in charge has been refreshing.

Quinn may end up being an abject failure here (I don't think he will be) and he wasn't my 1st or 2nd choice, but at the very least this hiring is a departure from the way that this team would normally do things and only further signals that they're very serious about starting over and getting things right.

Really looking forward to seeing what they do over the next month. Along with announcing new assistants, there is for sure going to be some movement (either picks, players, or both) prior to or during the draft.

Why did you want Keefe so bad? Because of the hype?

I’d like you to explain what makes Keefe a better candidate than Quinn. What is the difference between their systems and styles that makes you so convinced that Keefe is superior? Instead of “wahhhhh I didn’t get the guy I want!!!!!”.

Thanks.

not saying I wanted Keefe, but he is a lot younger, coaches in AHL and has done very well in AHL, also he has played in NHL, and yes there was a lot of hype about him. Why we didn't even interview him is bizarre.

Agreed word for word. There's been no half measures, no shortcuts. Every move may not end up working out but love the direction the franchise is trying to head towards and that's always been the biggest hurdle.

Why does this matter? 3 of the 4 coaches in the conference finals right now never played in the NHL. Hell Jon Cooper didn't even play in Canadian juniors and was a public defender before getting into coaching.

I like Keefe and have no doubt that he'll get his shot in the NHL eventually, but none of the other teams with openings interviewed him either.

Love that they went with a complete unknown.

This is not some veteran laden team that will have to be convinced to respect the man behind the bench.

His lack of actual NHL Head Coaching experience means absolutely nothing.

How he wants to develop the youth of the team is all that is important right now. GMJG may not even have his eye on this guy for beyond the 5 year term. Prep the kids for a HC that can take them the rest of the way.

If in the process he shows that he himself is capable of doing just that, even better.

As a long time BU hockey supporter I am thrilled he is leaving BU for NYR.

Top notch recruiter - awful coach.

1. usually players respect a coach who actually was "one of them" before
2. coach that played in NHL has better perspective of what players go through.
3. doesn't mean Cooper is a bad coach and doesn't mean Quinn is going to be bad, but if everything else is equal, why wouldn't you pick a guy with NHL playing experience over a guy without one?

Why is he an awful coach?

I could type for an hour.....

The biggest knock on him is the team on too many occasions was not ready for game night. This year BU had to run the table in Hockey East to make the NCAA but they should never have been in that position to begin with. They got off to a bad start when Minnesota State came to Boston early and made BU look bad.

All I can tell you is that longtime BU hockey supporters are not upset by his leaving.

Quinn was horribly outcoached in this game in 2015 when BU SHOULD have won the national championship at TD Garden - and didn't.
