Personally, I'm all about puck possession but these types of coaches with the corsi BS, much like yourself, always seem to forget that there's another team on the ice and you have to be able to defend .

If he can install a puck possession system while still being able to defend your own end of the ice then I'm all for it but I won't hold my breath..

:clap:TY!

I've been saying for a while that when many people talk about "possession" and how the team should be constructed to maintain "possession", the ideal of what they want seems to be an EA Sports thing where the player just holds onto the puck so much once figuring out out the AI's defensive tendencies.

Hockey is a transition game, and a coach needs to instill a system that can play both ends assuming he has all the horses for it because that's how teams go the distance.

I mean...duh?

No one describes a "possession game" as OZ only. The other component of a top possession game is the ability to limit what the opponent does in the DZ and being able to transition it up the ice.

It's not so much of advocating for "maintaining possession" but "limit how long the opposing team has possession." It goes without saying.

My problem with Quinn is that the first thing people praise him for is usually not his coaching, but his influence and good recruitment abilities. Some people say that he will need good assistant coaches to be effective. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be rooting for him all the way, but I can’t shake the feeling that he’ll be hired based on connections.

What has this guy done to get 5 years head coaching job from the New York Rangers?

This is an absurd deal. Guy hasn’t won anywhere.

Other than looking like mitt Romney and mike sullivan combined I don’t see the allure.

I would have waited on trotz Gordon or Keefe.

The assistants we hire for Quinn better not be any friends and family hirings. Zero attention should be put on getting someone Quinn is comfortable with and won’t feel threatened about.

Joe Sacco might be a good option, HC experience, coming from an organization doing a lot of — scratch that, some — good things. But I have to admit that I cringe a bit at the thought of an old colleague in Sacco.

What is the reason Keefe is off the table? What happened to all other good candidates? We should have focused on top AHL coaches and top NHL assistant coaches. I can't believe Gorton is screwing this up so bad.

It was never going to be Keefe. Not sure why so many thought he was a legit candidate.

A five year contract won’t stop him from getting fired after half a season if that is what Gorts want to do.

But otherwise I kind of agree with you. But let’s see what Quinn can do. Most is about the team anyway. Now everyone talk about Sullivan being a great coach, he won with the 2 best center’s in the league AND the BEST 3rd line in hockey.

Who cares if it's 3 years, 5 years, 10 years etc. Money's not an issue for the team and if he does a ****ty job he'll be fired. They literally just gave Vigneault an extension and fired him before any of those additional years even occurred.
Gotta have SOMETHING to bitch about.

Like others have said, the term for coaches is irrelevant. We just canned AV after his extension, and the Rangers can eat the cash.

I didn’t like Sacco as a HC in Colorado, but those teams were absolutely abysmal - so were Quinn’s in Lake Erie. I obviously don’t know anything about his developmental skills, but Boston did have a ton of kids come in and contribute immediately when they were hit with the injury bug. Cassidy and Sacco deserve credit for that. So does Jay Leach, who I’d be more excited about to bring on board as an assistant.

The most important thing that has to happen is the re-installation of an identity and structure to this team. They already have a good crop of players to build around in the 19-26 year old range.
