He’s the farthest thing from a “fresh face” (words Gorton used himself) I can think of.

Makes no sense.

Yeah, basically. If they go with Trotz they're kind of going back on what they said publicly about their search. That said, it's not like they have to stick to that and could see Trotz as the best option if he becomes available. I just suspect that it's more they're looking at other options.

The John Gruden guy RB mentioned could be a candidate, he could be great. But I watched everything available with him and got to say that he doesn’t come across as a super respect winning-capable person. I don’t have a problem with that. Coaches that handled media better than the average presidential candidate probably got a job for that very reason not for being a great coach. He also had some issues in the OHL were he was fired and reinstated when his players went on strike for him and then fired again which rendered the owner of his team suspended for 5 years. Doesn’t seem like he had — any — part of the underlying problem besides not playing the owners son. But I don’t think he is the super smooth type...

To put it like this, think Gorton must have big pair to make this guy the HC.

Assuming RangerBoy is onto something (he usually is) in suggesting the Rangers might be interested in John Gruden, here's a list of a few players recently coached by Gruden:

Brady Skjei - played for Gruden when he was a USNTDP coach
Ryan Lindgren - Lindgren captained a WJC-18 team coached by Gruden
Adam Fox - possible trade target?
Jacob Trouba - possible trade target? :naughty:

His son, Johnny Gruden, is also draft eligible this year. Will probably go somewhere around the 3rd round.

There isnt anything to indicate that they dont like their options though.

true...but the drawn out timeline and tidbits leaked about the process would indicate there was never a "target" candidate, and clearly nobody they've spoken to to date has blown them away. reading between the lines i think it seems very much like theres no conviction in any potential directions...hence the mccambridge suggestion that offers a guy thats earned one a chance and the organization some continuity for the young guys they want to develop.

If they hire David Quinn, they better get some really knowledgeable assistents. Quinn has the guts and charisma to get his way and influence people, but he certainly doesn't strike me as some kind of hockey mastermind...

OTOH we should have the resources to get that type of assistents. But I really don't want to see any friends and family hirings for the assistent positions.

He should definitely bring some good intel on NCAA players though, would be sweet to see some nice pick-ups of UDFAs.

Q -When the NTDP U18s visited last season, it was reported that they “loved BU’s style of play” What do you think they meant and why might they feel that way?
A- Hopefully the word spreads. That’s never a bad thing to have people say that, especially the national program, which is the age of players we’re recruiting. One of the things we stress is a puck-possession game. There are times you have to chip a puck in, but that’s not the way we want to play. We kick loose pucks in the neutral zone back to our defense so they can possess it and enter the zone with speed. A lot of teams will post a guy at the blue line and have him chip it in and go get it. That’s not how we want to play. We want to carry the puck into the offensive zone and attack with speed. We need our defensemen to be involved in the attack; so, it’s something we’re constantly stressing.
Terrier Hockey Fan Blog II: Q&A With Head Coach David Quinn

I like his general approach, nice to see the national program too because they are battled tested against a lot of different styles and phiosopys and can't get by using outdated stuff.

You can see how this is Charlie McAvoy hockey. I like that. Not sure if we have the Ds for it though. Shatty is so immobile for a system like this. TDA a little jumpy. Pionk will fit in extremely well. Skjei should do alright.

Have had a gut feeling Quinn was the guy for a long time now. I'm sure it will take a lot to get him to leave BU.

What can he get as a College coach, 500k? 750k?

He is like any player, who would turn down 4m for 500k? You go from being really well paid to being able to make you and all your kids financially independent. Probably more than one generation too.

Money will never be an issue for this team.

If Quinn is the guy, the chance of the Rangers trading up to draft Tkachuk rises to like 85%

You know, that's another thing that always sounded like a Ranger move to me. The org certainly loves bloodlines, and it would piss off 95% of HF. A bit of a stretch right now due to what it would take asset wise, but I could see them targeting him for sure.

Oh financially it's definitely not close - in the short term. But a New England guy, played for BU. Gets to follow up Jack Parker who is an NCAA and Boston hockey legend. I'm sure he considered BU his dream job. Family is happy I am sure. Job security for a looooong time in the NCAA. If he flames out in 1.5-2 years in NY, will he regret leaving a 5+ minimum year tenure at his alma mater? Where he gets prime US NTDP kids every year? It's probably a harder decision than it may look on the outside.

That said the opportunity to work with Gorton and Drury, O6 franchise that spends to the cap every year, plus a dump truck of money is no small thing.

I said he wouldn't leave his dream job and talented recruits. I don't mind being proven wrong.

Re trading up. I'd only do it for 3 or higher, gonna get an impact player regardless, maybe even Tkachuk

Good points. One thing though, I can't imagine him getting less than 4 years if he negotiates well with Gorton. That is 20m guaranteed even if he gets fired two weeks in. Have to be 40 years in BU to earn that.
