Carolina could have pushed for the playoffs had they just not started Scott Darling half of the time.

I don't think they would have gotten in (97 points ended up being the cut off, which is higher than I expected) but they could have been close.

They have a decent group of forwards and a damn solid blue line. They’re well coached. Their issue is that their goalies aren’t just mediocre, like the Flyers, it’s that they’re flat out terrible.

Does anyone feel like the NHL is the same coaches that have coached for the last 20 years and a few fresh faces that almost always flame out? I feel like it's extremely hard to find good new coaches. Seems like most new coaches suck. I think the NFL is much better with this.

Serious question. Are there any European options on the table? Instead of fishing in the same murky pond year after year, how about trying different waters if the fish is bigger and tastier?

The NHL is among the most nepotistic organizations on the planet. Not gonna happen, even though it should.

Who is that European coach the team was connected to last year who still had a year remaining on his existing contract? Wonder if he's been the plan all along...

Not sure about the other leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA) but isn't that generally speaking a North American sports thing? "If you aren't North American you can't possibly know about our great sports!"

Updated list:

Bill Peters
Darryl Sutter and Brent Sutter (and any other Sutter you can think of)
Dave Tippett
Paul MacLean (or Teddy Roosevelt)
Tony Granato's name was thrown out there
Stephen Valiquette (but must crouch down during games so the fans behind the bench can see)
DJ Smith
Jim Montgomery
Craig Berube
Sheldon Keefe
Bob Hartley
Mike Keenan
Mark Messier
Scotty Bowman
Emile Francis
David Quinn
The Corpse of Herb Brooks
Mike Babcock's Hair
Bruce Boudreau's Liver
A Pat LaFontaine Action Figure
Tom Renney

And names of guys we don't want:

Dan Bylsma
Michel Therrien
Ron Wilson
Jack Capuano
Lindy Ruff
Scott Arniel
Dallas Eakins
Adam Oates

I'd pare your list down to Keefe, Montgomery, Granato, Smith and Quinn. I'm not all that impressed by Peters and I sure as shit would not be happy with Tippett, Keenan, Hartley. Valiquette and Messier have no coaching experience.

So Brooks didn’t mention Joel Quenneville — can we assume that Gorton won’t consider him? Brooks have been fed info from Gorts for a long time now.

Quenneville has a rep for being tough on management. Gorts struggles with AV — shame on AV. Gorts struggles with coach Q — shame on Gorts.

But that would also disqualify Sutter I think, whom Brooks did mention.

Hawks announced Q and Bowman are both returning.

He's younger than Jagr...

Looking at his team's history it appears he got them the Championship as soon as he arrived after having missed the playoffs before. 17/18 result doesn't seem too great but he seems to have had a good record with Liberec up until this season.

Maybe some Czech posters can get us more insight.

Wasn't Krueger doing pretty good with the young Oilers crowd (comparably)? I know he hasn't been in hockey for a while but I'm just throwing names out there.

Maybe one out of left field: Marco Sturm, even though I don't think the German NT would let him go anytime soon after that silver medal

What I find interesting is how much turnover there's been with Jack Adams winning coaches:

Ruff - now an AC. No longer a HC
AV - fired
Boudreau - still a HC
Julien - still a HC
Tippett - gone
Bylsma - gone
Hitchcock - still a HC
MacLean - gone
Roy - gone
Hartley - gone
Trotz - still a HC
Tortorella - still a HC, but Brooks brought up the idea that he may be fired if the Blue Jackets don't get far in the playoffs
