I voted Drai just simply because aside from Kucherov, he's been the only other challenger so far and plays on the same powerplay as McD. Also has extensive history as the second best scorer at this point.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's Hughes, or Mackinnon if he plays a full 82, as he's always a threat.

Think most of the other young guys aren't right in their territory just yet, and the similar age range guys look to have peaked already.

Could be wrong. Would love a totally out of nowhere winner like Benn was. I might be one of the few that thought that was a really fun season scoring race, though I thought Seguin would get it.

I think there's two main ways to think about this. Health and performance. I think for 3+ more years, assuming McDavid plays a full schedule or close to it, he's a heavy favorite to keep winning Art Ross trophies, so if he's healthy it's most likely someone 22 or younger. Bedard, Hughes, Stutzle (or even a player not yet in the league).

Or if you're betting on injury, it opens up a bit, MacK has struggled to stay healthy, Kucherov has had some health issues AND is 30. Probably guess Drai since he plays a lot, and reliably racks up points, even if it'd be harder going without McDavid.

Unless he gets hurt, he probably has the next 3 on lock. Predicting injury is a crapshoot, so I'll go Bedard as someone that can hopefully eventually legitimately one day surpass him in point total.

Voted Matthews. Only way McDavid doesn't win is if he misses like 30+ games. Assuming that happens, it'll drop Draisaitls production as well.

Assuming he stays healthy for his entire career, I think it's his trophy to lose until hes like 33-34 and Bedard fully develops and eventually overtakes him.

Assuming a mcdavid injury drops draisaitl points, I would pick hughes. He did drop a bit as the season went on, but I think he has the capability.

I think the obvious choices are Draisaitl, Hughes, and Bedard.
Than Makar and McKinnon.
To win the Art Ross you generally need to be an elite playmaker
Even if McDavid is injured for a while I still think Draisaitl will rack up a lot of points so I’d go with him first.

If anyone besides Mcdavid wins it this year it will be Matthews, as far as I'm concerned Matthews is the #2 player in the world, the only other player I'd consider for #2 player in the world is Makar but he's not winning the scoring title.

Cale Makar is incredible though.

Bedard will do it, not this year because he's got Taylor Hall and not much else.

Yeah but I’m not predicting Bedard for this year. The poll is for the next winner not named McDavid.
I disagree with you on Matthews being the number two player in the world as well.
For me it’s:
McDavid
Makar
Draisaitl
McKinnon
as the clear top 4. Then 3 or 4 guys in the mix for the other spots. My bet is that Jack Hughes moves into the number 4 spot this year. Bedard will be in the conversation pretty quickly imo. My bet is by next year.

Matthews will more likely never win an Art Ross in his career.
As a general rule you need to get more assists than goals to win. Ovechkin had more assists than goals a few times. So far Matthews only season where he’s had more assists is last year when his goal scoring was down.
I think he’s a long shot to ever win one unless he becomes a better playmaker. I’m not saying he’s not already a really good playmaker, just that the other top guys are all elite.

Last time McDavid was injured Draisaitl won the Ross, Hart, and Lindsay.

That doesn't really address the point

McDavid missed what....5? 10 games? He still played most of season.

If McDavid has a season ending injury tomorrow - it definitely affects Draisaitl. Can Drai still step up and possibly win Ross? Sure maybe - but a McDavid major injury is definitely likely to negatively impact his production.

It absolutely does address the point. The comment I was responding to made no mention of a "season ending injury", just an injury. Draisaitl has shown he can elevate his game in the rare instances that McDavid misses games in the past. It absolutely amazes me that even after 5 years of playing at a 50+ goal, 120+ point pace people still think Draisaitl is a mere product of McDavid.

McDavid played 63 of 71 games in 2019-2020 and lost out on the Ross to Draisaitl. Draisaitl saw his PPG jump from 1.5 to 2.0 when McDavid was out that year.

And Draisaitl is significantly ahead of #3 in points since McDavid began to dominate the Art Ross trophy in 2017. Mcdavid is #1 in points since 2017 with 802. Draisaitl is #2 with 684. MacKinnon is #3 with 606. That is a significant gap.

Should McDavid miss time next year the biggest threat to him winning the Art Ross is clearly Draisaitl. In a couple years time as McDavid and Draisaitl get older it will be time for Bedard to start winning Art Ross trophies.

Tage Thompson. Just a vibe, no real reason

Otherwise my interior logic says Hughes, even though the 'usual' challengers like Draisaitl/Kucherov/Matthews/MacKinnon are all right there.
