They were talking on Sirius this morning that Ovechkin's projected record breaking date, per one tracker, is April 10 at home vs the Canes.

The Canes also play them on April 2 in Raleigh.

Given his history vs the Canes not a bad guess, I suppose.
I'm not exactly in a position to go follow Ovi around like Gretzky and Betmman will lol but if he's within a goal for either of those games I may consider traveling to go to one of them. Would be so f***ing cool to be there in person for a Gretzky record being broken and to see the Canes win as a cherry on top of the history.

Per Finnmedia, the watch that Rantanen paid for his number was a 41 mm Rolex Datejust and it was given to Roslovic after the Utah game.

Tällaisella ökykellolla Mikko Rantanen lahjoi joukkuetoverinsa – toimitettiin Carolinaan Suomesta (in Finnish).

edit: Oh, The Hockey News also did a piece:

I'm a watch fan but I don't understand paying this much for a watch. I get it's Rolex and that's how they roll but you can buy something that looks similar and functions just as well at any jewelry store for much, much less.

To be fair, its not like he asked for a Richard Mille or Patek Philippe

But yeah when you have that kind of money, a Rolex is a drop in the bucket. But even then, I think I'd still go with an Omega, and even THEN, I would probably still prefer just rotating through Citizen or Seiko watches.

Been working at a jewelry store upgrading some of their systems and over heard them tell a customer the "Glock" watches they have start at $600 and go up to just over a grand. My first thought was my Fitbit is perfectly fine at under $150.00 and damn I can buy an actually Glock for less than the damn watch.

That is a sobering median income when the poverty rate is at $15K for a single person.
The median income for my home county where I was born, is 22,760. (Buchanan co Va) Household is like 37K. That poverty level is a joke. People back home are poor as dirt. But I guess too be "poverty" you need to be on services or have a shithouse instead of an actual bathroom.

The median is over inflated due to higher cost counted and cities. I don't know if that figure is the national median if so the fact that rent on a card board box in San Deigo is $3,500 a month throws things off a little bit.

In Danville the cost of living is pretty low. I make around $65,000, my wife around $30,000 and I get 8k a year from the VA and live pretty damn well off.

$35,000 a year here is good living.

With current prices of food and goods I would struggle to believe that is the case for families but I could be wrong.
I havent rented in a long time so I have no idea what the current rental cost of the area is, but its very cheap to live here.

Also certainly adding children to a family adds a huge expense, I know I have 3. But having kids is not a right, if you cant afford them you shouldn't have them.

Speaking of affording things my wife showed me a social media post that's going around, don't know if its fake or not about a woman with 6 kids from 4 different fathers. She lives in section 8 housing for $60.00/month and gets food stamps. She is an influencer and just bought a 2024 BMW and the government is going to take away all her handouts and she is having a complete meltdown.

Can't find anything to substantiate this but honestly wouldn't surprise me. The amount of very nice expensive cars in the parking lots of low-income housing complexes is a very telling sign the system is broken.

According to that, $28.6k is the average person capita income, and $45.2k is the average median income.

So if he and his wife are making $95k a year, they're very well off compared to the rest of that area

Hey I can't have filet mignon every night but I do have steaks a few times a month (sirloin cause I have heart issues and they are the lowest fat cut I can find.)

I am fully aware that this area is unique in its cost of living and there are very few places where I could live like I do off of what I make. Every place has to have some positive and that is Danville's only one.

I didn't mean it as a knock against you. Just simply saying that someone who makes as much as your family does may not be able to accurately judge whether someone who makes a 3rd of what you do is "living good", even in a low cost area like where you live.

I was brought up in a middle class family but no where near upper middle class. When I was younger I thought Rolex was the end all be all of watches. Cue to when life got a lot harder in my 20s and I found out that wasn't the case. At that point that's when I learned the difference between new money and old money. Once I learned how much something like a Patek Philippe was going for I was stunned. But these revelations did teach me somethings about how to approach money.

1. Money is a tool and not the endgame.
2. Old money is hard to spot because they purposely dress boring and drive boring cars but go to places I can't identify on the map for fun and do things I didn't know were possible.
3. I've learned to spend a lot more time focusing on quality. I think back to the lesson back in the day of the $50 quality boots versus the $10 cheap boots that you have to keep repairing/replacing.
4. I might be too late to truly capitalize on the time value of money, as I'm just now starting to thrive, but I can make my little girls life a lot easier if I make better decisions.
5. Cut down debts -> Stop buying shit I don't need -> Organize -> Prioritize -> Invest like my life depends on it.

I enjoy studying the difference between classes in America so this is just a fraction of what I've learned, but I do find it interesting that watches were probably what started my curiosity on how the economy works. The work to be better is hard but very much rewarding.

Someone on here mentioned that at some point money is mostly a way to keep score for some people. I'd bet that most Rolex owners weren't buying the watch, they were buying status. A Rolex is a good way to display that status.

Mechanical watches are less accurate than quartz and significantly more difficult (read: expensive) to maintain. *All* premium watches are about buying status.
