Stats from Quanthockey re: first 33 games. I carved the analysis into 10, 10 and 13 game blocks.

Easy to see when goaltending was off (first 7 games of the last 13 game block was really bad) + team getting outhit and the opposition does a great job of blocking Canes shots.

Our shot % has been pretty consistent in each of the game blocks and face-offs improved since the first 10 and is good. I'd add, we had a huge shot differential in the first block of 10 but has cratered since then (and is apparent watching the games with sometimes lackadaisical effort seen).

Last thought: haven't compared the stat to previous years but this year unlike in the recent past I never feel comfortable with the team in keeping slight leads. My memory (Ok I'm old and perhaps wrong) suggests that previous teams could lock down the ice when ahead whereas I don't feel that way this year. We seem to be giving up too many Grade A chances in the 3rd.

Ah, went to NHL EDGE and found Pyotr's data. As you will see, his overall save % is down versus LY (and only at 50 percentile versus LY 74 percentile). On the positive side, his High Danger Save is much better and at 97 percentile. Mid-danger is slightly up Y/Y but below 50 percentile. Since his overall save % is down with high and mid up, that suggests to me that the "easy" save percentile is bad and down y/y. NHL EDGE link below if you want to inquire yourself.

Honest question for Carolina fans, how has Kotkaniemi turned out now that he's in his prime? Is he a legitimate middle six center? Can he be effective at both even strength and special teams? What does he do well and poorly and are the Canes better off with him?

Thank you.

He's OK at everything, but not great at any one thing. Literally the definition of average. The positive is that he can fit anywhere in the lineup and play that role, but the negative is that you'd probably prefer to have someone better suited for that role.

Is he a middle 6 guy? I mean yes and no. He has stretches of good play but is very often the scapegoat and demoted to bottom line minutes whenever Brindy needs to shake things up. He's inconsistent, but the line juggling has done him absolutely no favors in his career. I think he's a middle 6 guy, and a pretty good one, at so many other teams but just hasn't quite figured out how to get on the good side of our coaching staff so he is a regular on trade speculations.

At the same time, his contract isnt really detrimental to us, and many have long thought he'll eventually take over the Staal line when he retires. It's just that we are running out of patience for the front office to get a legitimate 2C and he's a logical addition to a trade if we are looking to fish for a Center

When he's playing heavy he's effective, but he doesn't do it often enough. Currently I would say he's a decent #3 but the bigger problem is we don't have a #2. He's not one, Staal's not one, and Drury's not one.

Rumor says Brock Nelson is available and could be had for a 2nd. That would give the Canes the #2 Center they really need. That would make KK available for another trade Although I did like his fight for Necas and Orlov tonight.

The top pair is really showing their age lately. Burns because he actually is on the decline and doesn’t have the mobility he once did, and Slavin perhaps showing the mileage of what they’ve asked him to do throughout his career. Slavin used to go very long stretches without making a significant defensive error or turnover. It seems like he’s lost a little bit of that focus and/or his feet are a little heavier.

I don't follow international hockey at all, someone explain in NHL terms. Would this be like Jackets sweeping the Lightning?
It would be like a college club hockey team beating the defending NCAA Division 1 champions.

Oh, wait. Nevermind.
