So Aho isn’t even in the skills competition, even though he’s won the accuracy shooting before and is pretty much as fast as everyone else there save McDavid? What a dumb f*** concept (for fans of anyone but Canadian teams and Colorado).
I'm curious so see if the league requires the non-participating players to be there tonight and in what capacity. I'm assuming they will because it's the NHL and why wouldn't they make these guys hang around all night in street clothes not doing anything but drinking.

I ended up deciding "f*** it, no Aho = I don't care" and I'm watching Northeastern vs the Maine Nadeaus instead tonight.

I do love the notion that they asked McDavid how to design this event and apparently a bunch of the events are specific skills drills he uses in the offseason, and then he was like “yeah and you should give $1 million to the winner lmao.”
I heard them say that, I had the same reaction. Must be nice to design your own events!

I’ll be watching. I see Aho 82 times a year and it doesn’t hurt my feelings to see him not in this.
It doesn’t hurt my feelings, it just seems like a real stupid way to grow the game or sell the skills comp in small markets. They want to keep expanding and focus on only the major markets they’ll be behind pickleball in 10 years.

I didn’t really care he wasn’t in there until I watched Kucherov mail the whole thing in. He clearly had no F’s to give, I’d have enjoyed watching Wilson more than that.

Yeah as I said I wasn’t watching to begin with, but as a kid the skills comp was my favorite thing. Watching that one Whaler who had no business in the all-star game doing one comp and rooting for him was great. And knowing full well he’d go balls out because he wa just happy to be there.

I don't think the Skills Competition really has a huge effect on the growth of the game. And it's not like the NHL can win no matter what choice they make. They make sure all teams have an All Star and a bunch of us complain about having mediocre players in the game. They revamp the skills to focus more on a handful of guys, and even though people always crucify them for not marketing stars, this too, is the wrong approach to a bunch of us.

Either way, I think this skills competition has been fine just like most of the others have been fine. But the only thing guaranteed is massive amounts of bitching no matter what they do. And I don't think there is really a way to make it more than just an okay night that's for sponsors and some local fans.

Is Aho in the skills comp? I'm just tuning in. I haven't really followed any of this. I know he was last year.

Nevermind. I guess he wasn't selected. Well whatever. I bet he wouldn't have mailed it in like Kuch the douche.

Geoff Sanderson beat Pavel Bure head to head in the fastest skater event and it was like the Whale won the cup. Then he had a 100+ mph shot to lead the event until Al Macinnis crushed him.

Those are my only Whaler memories of the skills competition.

I mean, it is the All Star game, right? Get the stars of all aspects of the game out there. Rig up a mythbusters style dummy and see who can elbow a guy in the head with the most force. Get some stand-up comedians to judge the best chirps. Have Brindy dropping the puck for a faceoff bracket or something. The possibilities are endless!

Have Brindy drop the puck for two officials taking the draw.

Watching soccer this AM and looked at Canes & Ranger remaining schedules.

if we can stay even or just behind after Feb. (1/2 our games against League top teams leading to a tougher schedule), we have a great shot at taking the Division:

Eh, the overall ASG experience is cool. They’ve got the rest of their lives to vacation. Being pampered by the league and media and public for a weekend is something only a few dozen people get to experience in a given generation.
For sure agree with you on that.

More so was saying would help Aho to have a full week off of just pure relaxation and resting any injuries he has for the playoff push here. Instead of running around Toronto doing NHL media stuff and just to end up not doing any skills comp and play 7 minutes and 25 seconds of the actual game.

Kids love the all star game, and they are your fan base. I don’t feel bad for these guys when they get chosen to go. It’s an honor and you get paid very well. You also get summers “off”. I’m fine with a vet who’s been there five times giving it up to a younger guy or someone who would otherwise never get to go a chance. Everyone else should put on their sweaters and smile for the camera, and do their job. I hated what the game had become, they weren’t trying so the three on three is better. They get exposed for not playing well pretty quick so they elevate their game a bit. They still overpass and the plays are predictable a bit but kids don’t see that.

We need more competitive guys like Mackinnon in there. Mcdavid had it a bit too. Bury a few on a team, make them feel embarrassed enough to play harder. More of that please, not enough finish because the plays were predictable on some of the games.

Please don’t bring Kucherov back, he was the poster boy for that old poor attitude. He played a little harder for the games but he clearly didn’t think much of it all. Came off as a real jackass. The KHL has an all star game too does it not?

The reason I’m fine in the end with Mcdavid coming up with the drills and then winning is the guy gave 100%. You could tell he was competitive about it. He didn’t care that it maybe made him look uncool to his peers. Good for him. That responsibility comes with being the best and he owned it.
