If you can get past Tripp's food references, and name drops, and toeing the company line with regard to buzz words/phrases, and general inane tangents, he's a pretty decent commentator. This whole north/south business aside, which I don't even recall being brought up prior to JR's comments, he can dissect a play pretty well.

He's got a great personality and makes tough seasons tolerable. Plus he really really likes talking about timeouts lately.

I actually don't have a problem with all of Tripps inane tangents, because even though they are many times absurd, they make it more entertaining (particularly when the Canes suck). What bugs me about him is he leaves me wanting for more in terms of hockey insight. For a guy that has played at a pretty high level, he seems to pick out one or two things (and many times they are things that require little insight) and sticks on it repeatedly for game after game. Almost like he has decided before the game what he is going to focus on and he isn't reacting at all to the game situation as he is looking for his 1-2 pre-defined nuggets. I do get that Color commentators need to do some of that and they all do, but Tripp goes overboard IMO and doesn't adapt enough during a game.

Maybe it's because he's a Canes announcer and is trying to focus on the season as a whole rather than game to game, so will be interesting to see his style in the playoffs.

This is true of pretty much every color commentator in any of the big four sports, in my experience.

Except Dan Dierdorf. :sarcasm:

While obviously there is a full gamut, I disagree. For example, Troy Aikman and Moose Johnston in football do a very good job of reacting to what is happening in that particular game and adding insight. They don't repeat the same themes continuously (granted, they see different teams each week). My point is that Tripp gets on these themes and doesn't get off of them even when what's happening in the game doesn't warrant that.

Again, I don't mind Tripp because of the entertainment value, but to me, he adds very little hockey insight, which is what is left lacking for me. I don't need a lot, but don't need him to point out 10 games in a row how Skinners two-way game is improving every time Skinner back-checks.

Tripp's going to be stunned by the amount of hitting and general speed and physicality. You know, some.

 True. I wonder if he is right now asking parents of the Stars/Avalanche out for Dinner so he can get his critical research done in time for games?

Today appears to be generic "we didn't accomplish what we wanted to do" and other recycled quotes day.

Actually, Tripp has gotten a lot better in recent years, it'll be interesting to hear the impressions a broader audience has of him.

I could see Tripp trying to convince Razor to help him expand his vocabulary a little bit.

Hopefully he puts his Ivy League education to use and finally figures out the difference between benefactor and beneficiary. He has miss-used the word for years now. But who's counting? ;)

That's the whole point of today for teams that don't make the playoffs. It's a pointless exercise.

"We didn't accomplish what we want to."
"I love it hear and want to be back."
"All the coaches and management are great."

That's just the way it is.

Staal never sees himself in another uniform. But did say he wants to make the post-season and that these end of season interviews are old.

 OK Eric.

Keep in mind that if the media doesn't want to cover it, they don't have to. Teams don't arrive at the rink today to do media interviews, they're there to do exit interviews with management and coaches. Since the media is there...players talk to the media.

It'll be interested to see how well Tripp performs since he is cut off from his source material.

You still get some interesting moments, it's not entirely worthless. Watch the Cam Ward interview. Near the end he's asked if it's difficult for Muller to get his message across in the room. The answer went something like: "whoa... uh, well, for me.... yeah, I'm not touching that one". Rather telling, in many ways.

You're never going to get the unvarnished truth, but you will be able to get some insight. It's worth doing.

Dear in headlights version of Tripp will either be must see television or so incredibly boring that everyone will hate it. There are no other options. I can't wait to hear some of the things that come out of his mouth in pure nervousness.

Tripp will do fine.

If you aren't tuning him out you'll notice that he's always been well-versed on the Canes' opposition, backgrounds, what's going on with their team, and puts it out there. Sure, most of us posting here have a handle on not only this team but what's happening with other teams/players/coaches and backgrounds, but Tripp isn't the color guy for only this board. He's offering-up info for anyone watching the broadcast and a lot of viewers learn from what he says because they aren't 24/7/365 puckheads. They have lives to live. For a "homer" broadcaster, a hypothetical fan who knows nothing about the opposition will come away with a lot more listening to Tripp than listening to most color guys around the League.

His breakdowns are done pretty well too. It's not like he doesn't know the game or why things tactically worked or didn't. Sure, he's a bit goalie-centric, but so what? It's a slightly unique perspective and its not at the expense of other knowledge. He sees the game. In his job you only get a couple of seconds to express those things because the game moves on, and he does it.

Tripp knows the game, the personalities, maintains an even strain, gives us info and some entertainment. The fun we have at Tripp's expense here for his "-isms" and food-talk is like making fun of the decorations on the icing of a pretty good cake.

One of those things that you don't really notice is the fact that Tripp has a pretty substantial stutter. Not that it should prevent him from doing television obviously, but I did find that interesting. It's especially pronounced when he gets excited. Part of it may be his deference to John or expecting to be interrupted and trying to get words out too fast.
