Can't trade him until next year
Likely just be a perfectly timed coincidence - they were not playing well.... at all.
They let in 2 goals in the first 5 minutes, something like 30 seconds apart.
And I'm pretty sure the 2014 trade deadline is less than one calendar year away, so they won't be able to trade him until he's an RFA again. We're in for a round 2.
o'reilly 2013 is the derek morris of 2001.
delusions of grandeur. **** them both.
Tom Gulitti @TGfireandice
Flames made team that's one point behind them in standings better this season by signing O'Reilly to offer sheet. (Why teams don't do it)
That's a good point from Gulitti. If they let it be then O'Reilly would still be sitting out. Now a team they're fighting with gets a player to make it's team better because of this.
I wouldn't expect anything different from Feaster. This idiot out in Denver isn't too much better. Although it was Sherman who hired Joe Succo, and gave him an extension.
To be fair those terms were reportedly more than what colorado was willing to sign him for. If anything Feaster should have added another year at a high price to scare them off even more. Very gutsy move but it was one I'd make more often than not if you're Calgary.
ROR is a machine. Definitely gonna be on my fantasy squad.
That's why it's insanity they matched the offer sheet. They INSTANTLY matched it for more than they were willing to pay? Then why pay it? Take the picks and run. It's dumbfounding they would basically with a swipe of the pen say we were just being stubborn idiots, here's your new payday and we wasted all this time for not.
Epic facepalm for Colorado in the end. Calgary simply made a grab for what they don't have, and looks like won't for a while the way they're running things.
@RealKyper: Hearing #NHL #NHLPA will soon announce an agreement in principle on realignment. Players appear comfortable enough moving forward.
What would you do if you were an RFA now with the Avs? Hahaha. Thanks Calgary.

I'm starting to feel like a crotchety old man, pining for the good ol' days of division names, ties, 22 teams, no cockamamie shootouts or trapezoids, no lockouts every 5 years, commissioners without their heads up their butts, etc. etc.
The one thing I don't miss is the two-line pass rule.
So...if Colorado didn't match, O'Reilly would have needed to clear waivers to play for Calgary?
So...if Colorado didn't match, O'Reilly would have needed to clear waivers to play for Calgary?
- The Avalanche would've gotten a 1st and a 3rd from Calgary
- The Flames would've had to put O'Reilly on waivers to have him in their lineup
- The BlueJackets would've picked up O'Reilly for free off the waiver wire
- The entire hockey world would be pissing in their pants about the entire debacle
If Sherman would've waited just a extra day, when he had a entire week to decide if he wanted to match or not, instead of responding within a couple of hours... he'd be in the driver's seat like you wouldn't believe. He'd have Feaster by the balls and that's a understatement right there.
A late-night email from NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirms that O'Reilly would be the first case under the newly amended rules if and when he returns to the NHL this season. Daly wrote, "No, he would not be subject to waivers. He would have been under last year's rules, but that was changed in collective bargaining."
Apparently this has been debunked. The CBA changed with regards to RFAs:
Edit: Or maybe not. Reading makes my brain hurt.
Edit #2: Making a rival look foolish while making your team worse probably isn't the greatest motivation. The draft picks are nice, but outside of the 4-5 blue chip guys, I'm not sure there's a guy that's a slam dunk to be better than O'Reilly.
