Coach's challenge did not pass. That does not mean they won't revisit that possibility. #nhl

NHL goalie guru Kay Whitmore says the specific goalie equipment recommendation is (1) to shorten the height of the goalie pad above the knee

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 33s
And (2) to make sure the knee pad is less bulky and more conforming.

If Pittsburgh goes to the Finals with Iginla, LA better make Fleury look so bad that Vokoun starts games 3 and 4. And if anyone can knock Dustin Brown and Penner the **** out, that'd be cool too. But otherwise, have at them, Kings!

:handclap:

I don't care for the coach's challenge (this is not the NFL) as long as refs are being held more accountable, the have been awful this season.

Get rid of the trapezoid also.

**** just the knee pads. I'm just as much concerned with the stupid upper body equipment. Why does Jacob Markstrom have to wear so much wider body equipment than Anders Lindback when they're the same size? That's one of many examples. Some of these guys you just wanna pop on their shoulders to see them deflate like a balloon cause that's exactly what they look like.

All in all just make the nets a little bigger, and leave the equipment alone.

When was the last time we seen a goalie with leg pads just above the knee? Marty like 4 years ago?

I know what your saying, but if they do this players will actually have an option to score low. maybe in a few years they'll downsize the chest protector. when Lundy "got elbowed by Zajac" they showed him flopping around like a moron (embellishment was also spoken about!)...and his helmet was damn near coming off any time he moved his shoulders. all you could see was his teeth. goofy ass

I'll never ever believe the goalie equipment was not the main cause for the drop in scoring over the last 20-25 years. Just look at little Sean Burke in 1988 when he looked like a scarecrow. He had like an 875 save percentage which was good back then. Look at big Sean Burke in 2001, and his 920 save percentage. Patrick Roy is another example. In the late 80s he wasn't wearing airbag like equipment. He posted down to earth numbers (Though better than average for that time period to be fair) than in the late 90s-00s he was posting the best of his career with the huge equipment, and jersey 3 sizes too big.

I wouldn't just say equipment. The craft of goaltending has evolved a ton since the late 80s. The goaltending in some of those early 80s games seems like it's still in the stone age. Plus it seems like it's normal now for a pro goalie to be at least 6'2. Back then, there seemed to be a bunch of guys around 5'9.

That said, there's some room to be trimmed. It's just a matter of how to mandate what is legal. I've read that a skinny guy like Ryan Miller could wear medium sized goalie pants but instead will wear XL to take up more space (not picking on Miller since I used to do that too). Putting a limit on the thigh rise seems logical, but I'm not sure how you determine the limit.

I'll go with the size, and the fact many were stand up back in the day as part of it. Though there are a lot of examples of guys who played back then, and then their stats were inflated later on when they started taking up more net. I used Roy and Burke as examples.

There was a time when the purpose of the goaltender's equipment was to protect the player from injury, not to provide huge surfaces for blocking the puck. I'm in favor of reducing pad size to reasonable degree.

YES!! smaller goalie pads likely. about ****ing time!!!!

I've heard this one before. But this time it looks like they might actually be serious.

Which it won't get. The players don't like it at all.

Nick Cotsonika ‏@cotsonika 3m
Another thing the GMs did not discuss: bigger nets.

And they absolutely shouldn't. I'm with the other folks that say hockey would be fundamentally changed if they did that. 4 x 6, don't **** with it.

Uh, what? I guess retaining Kovy, Elias, Brodeur, and Zajac in their primes is nothing but losing the likes of Gomez, Martin, Gionta, and a now really overpaid Parise was crippling.

Lou sucks.

I'm not bashing Lou, I'm just saying his negotiating tactics are subpar. Waiting until players hit FA to negotiate has cost the team talented players over the years.

Glen Sather to under go prostate cancer surgery tomorrow.
Best of luck to him. I've had a couple of family members go through that and they both chose chemo over surgery. Both options are still scary.

Boo to coach's challenge not passing. Coaches need a way to highlight how awful the refs have become.

Hooray for shrinking goalie pad sizes. Every little bit helps.

Blows my mind that PIT has any cap space left with the players they have. I have to imagine they'll have some sort of Chicago-esque dumping of talent soon to comply with the new cap... right?
