Bowman is a clown. Let's see how this plays out.
Bowman didn’t create the situation - he inherited it. He was hired 3 weeks ago.

This is on Katz and Jackson by sunsetting Holland and not having an immediate replacement or a plan on how to handle their own players. Jackson spent money in UFA signing 13 guys. They opened themselves up to this.

Really unsure why there are limited offer sheets through the years. If a Gm positions his team pooly then why not capitalize. That's life.

You’re overpaying at the end of the day. Usually on potential vs what you know with older players. Like Broberg, that’s a lot of money for someone who hasn’t done much.

GMs are no longer attempting to hold the line on salaries to RFAs, the very players that the teams had the advantage over. They justify it by either saying they are buying out their first few years of UFA, and now by offer sheeting them.

Unless you’re Dubas where you give them money, signing bonus, trade protection and walk them straight to free agency

Draft capital as well. I’m sure some GM’s are unwilling to part with the picks that are required for the offer sheet.

Thanks but a 2nd and 3rd is really not that daunting

Makes sense. Risk reward

I think the older guard of GMs looked at it as killing their career in a limited circle of people. In limited cap era, a new crop of GMs and different perspectives on things, we may see more.

Armstrong has his ‘marketed’ succession plan air cover to not give a crap about that. So, he does it trying to help his re-whatever he is doing.

But depending on the amount, STL may give a 2nd or 3rd back, plus zero dollars in investment time, for former 1st rounders that were ‘developed’ by another team.

It’s actually a wise move, albeit the QO on the back end is where the killer is on those deals.

Still expecting to see the Leafs win a cup in the next 5 years or so but the fact Tavares won't be handed the cup is a huge consolation

Good points.

In this particular case, I'm thinking it'll be a huge boost for St. Louis to end up with these players. They've added plenty of prospects in recent years. Now it's time to take more solid steps in a time where many feel they're on the outside looking in.

The team already has plenty to work with as is. These additions will open some new options (while improving the team) and even if both go through, they'll have more than 8 MM in cap space.

Much like his time with the Hawks. He inherited a team built to win and left to his own devices, couldn't figure out what to do afterwards.

Teams don’t go on autopilot to win three Cups during his tenure over 5 years. Was the core there? Certainly, but the core was supplemented and supported, which achieved success.

Lou was a building a SC contender in Toronto, yet Dumbo took over and years later…nothing to show for it as he wrecked what Lou was doing.

STL has a termed aging defense (all signed by Armstrong btw) and are in no man’s land on fixing it.

From STL perspective, the offer sheets are a smart move to augment draft development time. From the players perspective, they’ve been yo-yo’Ed in that lineup and get guaranteed cash, which will include playing time.

The other players on the team know it’s a business, if they stick with EDM.

Another thing, maybe this is Steen really at play here, Armstrong takes the public bullet on the offer sheet. Both players, if they go to STL, will be ‘developed’ or not, when Steen becomes GM.

A bit more than the core was there when he took over for Tallon. His actions over the last 4 years of his tenure there do somewhat speak for themselves.

You’re commingling two separate things because of your position on the latter.

I think the Leafs are in a much tougher situation right now than others seem to think, and I could easily see them not coming close to a Cup within the next five years. Tavares will almost definitely take a cheap deal which will help, but they’re either going to lose Marner for nothing or sign him to a $12+ million deal, and either outcome hurts them in different ways. Then there’s the fact that they have a pretty mediocre forward group outside of their top three or four, their defense is aging and locked up for the next few years, and they don’t exactly have a great farm system. The cap going up could help a good amount but I don’t see them being a deep enough team at all to win.
