What was Reilly pissed about? Slapshot in to empty net? thats not allowed? Reilly must have just been defending the integrity of the game. smh what a doosh

It's an old school response for sure. It should cost him.

Leafs fans really are the softest crybabies in sports. You read any of them on Twitter and a slapshot is like killing their grandmother. They love feeling aggrieved and insulted, it's like they can't exist unless they are both simultaneously privileged and unfairly prosecuted.

“I thought it was appropriate,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said of Rielly’s response.
- from the Athletic article -

What a dick
Yeah, this code bs is indefensible. The only difference between this and dale hunter is that it appears Reilly didn't succeed in injuring his victim. That's an assault, period. The 'provocation' was irrelevant.

Suspend him for 15 games. Suspend the coach for 3 for his comments.

I'm surprised he's not getting fined for his comments.

I like the old school stuff so I don't mind a retaliation of some kind but cross-checking someone in the head ain't it.
Rielly should have called out Greig, dropped the gloves, and taken a lesser suspension for instigating a fight in the last 5 minutes of a game.

Agreed, but like I said, you can't have someone show up your whole team and then just skate away. He had to do something. What he did probably wasn't the best idea, but it's the heat of the moment. Not excusing it, but I'm guessing his team and his coaches would take that over doing nothing.

This truly is worthy of their old column
“This week’s sign that the apocalypse is upon us”

I’m not here to say that the 2024 version of SI was a bastion of journalism but their demise is another sign that thoughtful and critical, unbiased analysis is fast becoming a relic of the past.

Soon we’ll be left with nothing but blowhards like Biz and homers like the Rags

People tend to agree that the code said Grieg was obliged to fight someone, and if he did not would. ..err... pay... whatever that means. there being nothing to consult, every opinion about what is and "ain't it" ain't it. There's no "it".

imo it's odd for Hunter-hating Islander fans to be 'old school' that way, because I do not think Hunter would have done it if Turgeon wasn't already hated for not fighting when he was considered obligated during the WJC brawl vs Russia. And also because one of our legends also thought this was some bull**** (but, then, we also have some legends who did not).

It’s remarkable how quickly Ovechkin’s production has fallen off this year. We know his surrounding cast is not as talented, but surely a fair amount of his decline is on him. Is there still some fuel left in the tank?

He’s got 2 1/2 years remaining on his 9.5 million AAV contract. Although it seemed like he wanted to finish his career with the Caps I wonder if there might be mutual agreement for them to move him at the TDL. Chances are that would require retention on the Caps part.

Is there a need and is he a fit elsewhere? And no, I’m not thinking the isles should be in the mix.

I'd be shocked if he went anywhere else. He seems to be strictly chasing history now and not concerned about a cup so he'll just hang out in Washington until his time is up. I think it's more likely Crosby is moved than Ovechkin.

I suspect we both agree that it’s unlikely any of those players get moved at the TDL I can’t see the Pens bailing yet considering they traded for Karlsson. Guentzel would have to go too if Crosby were to be dealt at the deadline. In the offseason? Sure.
