Toronto and LA are up to 8 OTL and Boston is up to 9. So just one question, is anybody calling them the Toronto, LA and Boston Loser Points yet? Or does that only apply to the Isles?
We started doing our losing in regulation to stick it to the haters.

Of course. Loser points are what the OTL column is.

"Loser points" are just old school ties for teams that don't win in 3v3 and SOs. And since there is no 3v3 or SOs in the playoffs....

Last night, the loser point was what the TOR column was, baby!

Oh yeahhhhhh! 🤘
I don’t know why anyone would get offended by the term loser points. They are what they are. A point for making it to overtime, then losing the game.

With enough 'loser points', we become a winner.

I am ok with that.
We’re losing our way into the playoffs.

I do not think i ever considered them loser points. It is a point earned for a tie game in regulation. Past that, call the points what you want, because in my old school world anything past the point for a tie is gimmicky and silly.

Because many of us don’t feel like it should be considered losing a game. Because you’re losing a gimmick.

Especially since so many people here like to put value only on what teams do in the playoffs. Seems strange to then put equitable value in the NHL regular season OT… as an NHL game. More so when you consider that it will never happen in the playoffs.

Especially when the NHL “manufacturers” an extra point to award a team for the gimmick.

On an AHL TRYOUT contract, not even a full contract, for the Toronto Marlies . . . and Kiefer Bellows is their leading goal scorer . . . Dangle brings this up to have a laugh at the Isles, since there wasn't anything else for him to be happy about

This is probably true. But, at the same time, it's a gimmick for everyone and teams should plan accordingly. There's definitely a strong element of luck to it, but if you're consistently losing a lot of these, it's probably indicative that something should be adjusted. You're giving away points and 3 or 4 of them can be crucial when you're a bubble team.

The NHL is close to 10 years with the OT adjustments and shootout. It’s beyond a ‘gimmick,’ it’s an integral part of the game.

Absolutely, don’t disagree with this at all. My point is not really to defend the Isles or minimize them needing to reach OT as a measure of the kind of team they are. Rather just pointing out how frustratingly stupid the NHL OT is.

If you want to evaluate a team in context to their playoff potential, then I imagine the following would be best… Regulation W and L everything else is undecided.

Of course a team can possibly NOT make the playoffs due to what happens in the undecided. Not arguing that either.

Rather when the notion of team records comes up, it’s usually under the premise of ignoring where they are in the standings and trying to determine what the team’s actual potential is?

ie. “What does this record say about this team and what it can reasonably do in the playoffs?”

As for the Isles, they’ve squarely have been a bubble team thus far.

Integral part of the NHL and how they conduct their seasons. Yes. I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with that.

When I say ‘game,’ I mean just that the actual game. A hockey game is 60 minutes of 5-on-5. After that, whatever happens doesn’t really reflect NHL playoff hockey.

But it can absolutely determine if a team makes the playoffs. Kind of sounds like a poor system to me? :dunno:

Well said.

It’s nonsense. But if you’re a bubble team, it’s important nonsense.

I agree with this. My issue is with the idea that piling up "loser points" somehow cheapens the record - like, "yeah, they're 3rd in the division but look at all of those loser points". Having a lot of loser points just means that a team is missing out on the opportunity to get more points in OT and SO. The problem isn't that the 48 points are somehow tainted - the problem is that they don't have 52 points because of all the missed bonus points, as you said. Yeah, 3v3 and SO proficiency means nothing in the playoffs, but it could be the difference between being in or out of the playoffs in the first place.

He was a good to great AHL with us also, this just further proves the point, he doesn’t have enough to put it together at the next level. He could maybe do some damage in the KHL.

Flyers won, Caps won and devils winning. Unbelievable
Bad night to lose. They are out of a playoff spot using %. NJ will jump us eventually. They have given away so many points this year. Tough not to look at the coaching staff and management and wonder why they can’t the most out of this roster. I feel like the guys that were hurt and are now back are part of the problm.

If you are a business and want to keep your customers engaged (and paying partners) with more eyeballs and spending, then having more teams be competitive is in the business best interests. This is not 1985 anymore.

I hate to say it, but just maybe the Flyers are for real and not drop off as I had hope. Still many games yet to play. Coaching matters
