What is the consequence of a shot clock violation? Is it a full two minute powerplay, or does the other team just get possession behind their net, like at lunch/pick up hockey? I think a full powerplay would suck, and possession change would be Busch league.
All good questions, I'm sure the NHL will screw it up either way. I agree with it being bush league. Also not my preference at all.

I guess you don’t care for the way that was handled either. What would you recommend Armstrong do?
If people want Lou fired so badly, based on that logic, Armstrong should have been fired a long time ago. He’s an average GM with a comfortable ownership group, he manages his image very well, and he’s riding his one hit wonder Cup as long as he can. Good for him.

Good for him??? Good for the Blues. At least Armstrong won a Cup for a franchise that hadn’t won anything since their inception in 1967. It gets you some grace from a loyal fanbase that doesn’t look for contrived reasons not to support their team.

Lou fell short with the Islanders. You can say the final chapter hasn’t been written yet but it looks like Lou isn’t going to get his one-off cup here. He’s just about boxed himself into a corner with some bad contracts, including $9M/yr to a player you don’t think much of. We don’t even have the cap space to put a player on IR. He’s also traded away first round picks in the effort to coax one championship out of a scrappy bunch that played with a lot of heart but wasn’t talented enough. Now that lack of organizational depth is hitting home. And yet you find a way to be snarky to just about everyone and everything other teams do and other fans think. Your perogative but it comes across badly, imo. If Armstrong is an average GM with a comfortable ownership, Lou’s time with the Islanders comes in behind that with an ownership that gave him carte blanche and no oversight.

Lou can say the exact same thing to Andrew Gross and News12 tomorrow and it would sound as hollow as he did last summer when he said, yet again, it’s his on him and he has to be better. And as stupid as Ledecky came across with his In Lou He Trusts speech. At least Armstrong earned the grace to make his statement. As Islanders GM, Lou’s grace from the fans ran out in 2022.

Was some really good times.
The sad thing is right before the COVID pause, they were in a free fall and based on actual points, weren’t even in a wildcard spot. It’s insane how a team went on like a 17-0-2 run or whatever it was and was not running away with the division. The metro was an absolute bloodbath that year

I was on a trip around southern Florida 4 years ago, watching the tail end of that streak.

It was 7th heaven.
I was on a trip through America, Actually went to my second and third Isles games, wins over Florida and St Louis. Both were in OT!!! What are the odds? In fact all three of my Isles games have been OT wins! (first was Greiss poke check game)
The St Louis game saw us down 2-0 late, Nelson scored with 5 to go and then Barzal tied it up with seconds left, and then Toews won it in OT.
After US headed to South America, streaming games whenever I could. Watched one game in the airport in Panama City.
Then saw some of those streak wins in a remote fishing lodge in Patagonia!

I think Friedman suggested 10 minute 3v3 as a way to avoid shootouts. A maybe for me. I could care less about establishing possession as a strategy. If a short attention span generation requires a shot every 15 seconds too bad.

Next game is huge for so many reasons.

10 minute 3v3 OT. No shootouts. Still tied after 10? End of game, each team gets a point. Add in a 20 second zone clock, like NBA shot clock - if you have possession, you have 20 second to get in the offensive zone, otherwise change of possession.

I stated my thoughts on the ot earlier, but I don’t understand all this talk about OT when even with replay the NHL cannot even get a goal correct with replay. That no goal call against the Ducks was brutal.

The NHL should spend more time figuring out how to get better angles for replay reviews than who gets a loser point. I’m also not a huge fan of replay, but since it’s not going away why not make sure it gets the best opportunity to succeed and be done much quicker?

The NHL should just mandate the 10 min OT. The PA shouldn’t have an issue with it, but like many unions it’s an issue bc it’s made an issue just because.

If they extend the OT by 5 minutes, what’s the issue? Some additional players get too much ice time? Isn’t that on the coach?

Any PA argument falls short when you are willing to play full OTs in the playoffs 80+ games later.

But what kills me is that they move it so well with Gruden, and the islanders did that also. They didn't need to fire Gruden, they were at a mediocre PP rate. Now we're at a bottom 5 rate and the team just struggles for a reason.
This didn't age well....

Great players make great coaches.
Butch Goring and Doug Weight say, "hold our beers".

I hate everything about what they're doing with extra time. They still need to change the point structure but they won't. Regulation wins need to count for more points than OT wins or losses.

They have so many options too. Just pick one and go with it. Three point games are dumb.

Regulation win = 3 points
OT/SO win = 2 points
OT/SO loss = 1 point

---

Regulation win = 5 points
OT win = 4 points
SO win = 3 points
OT loss = 2 points
SO loss = 1 point

(this results in 6 point games so would need to be fixed, give zero points for a SO loss I guess)
---

Regulation win = 2 points
OT/SO win = 1 point

---

Win = 2 points
Loss = 0 points
I heard they were also considering removing the goalie and the first team to hit both posts and the crossbar wins.

Or the PA announcer says, "I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul"

“Everyone in this room is now dumber for having read that” :D

@PK Cronin - you mentioned regulation wins should count more than OT wins. Agreed. And to a small extent, they do in the tiebreakers.
