Atlanta is in the top 10 TV markets in the country. Houston is up there as well. That's not insignificant.

3rd time's the charm.

This iteration of the team should be named the Atlanta Boomerangs.

Two of the hottest and most humid places in the country. Gonna take a lot to keep that ice good, no?

The Thrashers were fine. The city got screwed by a shitty owner who threw the franchise under the bus because he wanted to sell the Hawks. Another franchise would do fine there, especially since they're proposing to build the facility in the suburbs like they did with the Braves.

If and when that building is built, and I'm pretty certain there's a very specific and hockey-friendly area for it, then I can't see the NHL not going back.

Heck, not unthinkable that a team would be announced as soon as it's clear that said building is under construction.

Well, part of the issue with Atlanta is that it's a largely suburban city. An event downtown requires 90% of the participants to travel from the northern suburbs, and it's a hassle. It's why the Braves moved to the suburbs... people hated going to the ballpark. I remember reading about the Braves situation and the #1 issue they had in regards to attendance was, by far, people not wanting to go into town. I'd imagine a lot of the baseball demo overlaps with the hockey one. The arena proposal is pretty far from town... too far in my opinion, but I think people would be more willing to travel to a game there than downtown. Just like any other city, there's demographic elements in play and the northern arc, where the facility is being proposed, is significantly more affluent and made up of northern transplants than the southern area of town.

Football and basketball is a little different, which ties into the main problem the Thrashers had. They shared an arena with the Hawks and the owner couldn't get someone to take both franchises at that downtown arena. The prospective buyers were savvy enough to only want to invest in the Hawks there. When they got a bid they liked with the Hawks, they just cut bait with the Thrashers and quickly took the first bid they got in order to avoid delaying or scuttling the Hawks bid... which was the Winnipeg offer.

This is from my very little experience but.... I think a franchise outside the city of Atlanta would do well. I don't want another expansion team though. I've driven to Atlanta a few times since I live close and it is a pain in the ass to go through that city. If I was living out in the suburbs there is no way in hell I would be driving out for every game.

This arena sounds like it would be outside the city. I think it would do fine. Ownership would also hopefully be better.

Suburb ATL would work fine.

34 teams total is weird, but with an arena the team owns and a good ownership group it will survive (and potentially succeed).

I have no problem with the NHL owners taking another 2 Billy.

My issue with continuing to expand is they have a franchise in Arizona that is in a terrible spot. If they want a team in Atlanta so bad they should move Arizona there. Selfishly I would love a team in Arizona. It would be a fairly short drive to see some NHL hockey where I live now.

Leafs trying Nylander at C. They will apparently also leave Matthews and Tavares at C. So there you go. Maybe Barzal, Horvat and Nelson at C isn't so crazy after all.

"Keefe noted that John Tavares will continue to play centre, with Nylander's position change being made to provide additional depth behind Auston Matthews."

If the Leafs are doing it, it's probably a little bit crazy.
Indeed, that's a possibility. They could also be trying him out there to see if he can slot in behind Matthews as a 2C eventually if they let Tavares walk, or move him to wing. Like, if he's insisting on $10M+, they may figure they don't want 2 wings making that much so let's try him at C.

Wonderful move . . . but you wonder how long until a mean defender will light him up on that
This next gen of players wasn’t raised like that, so it’s highly doubtful that’s going to happen. There’s less and less of that style in the game now and making moves like that is no longer frowned upon either.

I'm looking forward to goal dances.

There's always gonna be someone ready to ring your bell when you're doing that.

I get what you're getting at, and thank goodness all these young talents are out there showing their wares, but there's still always an Arber Xhekaj for those Logan Cooleys...

Heck, I can see a Mayfield easily doing something to say, "Not in my house".
