I wonder if some of that is a choice by the Canes- they get way, way more of the money if you buy from the eye, so if they can keep those trendy things to carolinaproshop rather than nhl.com, they're coming out pretty far ahead.

And hey look, hometowny themed merch for the icecaps fans:
Really hope they will make the jerseys go on sale. Crew sweaters are not my thing.

That stuff was made for the IceCaps night last week and was developed in house.

This other stuff is hosted online and branded by Adidas or Fanatics through the league

I went over to The Eye the afternoon of the game with the intent of picking up some IceCaps merch & was pretty disappointed with what they were selling. This was literally all they were offering. Definitely feels like a lost opportunity, to me.

Speaking of old jerseys, I should wear my dad's old Roanoke valley rebels jersey one night. That'd be a hoot. Dave Schultz 1970 or something. Dad got the thing when he came back from vietnam and it's still up there in storage.

ETA - speaking of the eye, do they still have the jerks stuff? My beer glass got broken in the dishwasher and I need another. What's sad as hell is that I only paid like 125 for my black jersey, (its the one with the fight strap - you know for pre-game bojangles) so it's the good one, but a damn hoodie is like 80 bucks or something. WTF

Its a cheaply made screen printed crew sweater.

Like, don't get me wrong, I love the fact there is anything IceCaps related in The Eye right now, but as much as Dundon is capitalizing on The Whale, we should be trying to do the same with our own IceCaps history. I was extremely disappointed they didn't at least create a hat for that event, but they absolutely should be able to create and produce IceCaps jerseys with modern jersey construction. Millennials from this area would buy that shit up, that was our childhood team.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is that I think that may be the point. I don't know if the teams can chose to be involved in those side product lines or not, but if they can possibly avoid participating in the non-core Adidas or fanatics stuff, they steer people to their in-house products, where the profit margins for them are far higher. Every sale on NHL.com is split equally between all 32 teams (and the NHLPA for player branded merch), *after* fanatics gets their cut. When they sell something they produce in house, not only are they getting all of the retail markup (which is a LOT), they're also getting 100% of the licensing fee for the logo, instead of that being split 32 ways as it is with the NHL shop. The more sales they can shift from fanatics to themselves, the better for the team.

Would the demand really be that big, though? I get that it was your childhood team and that those ties run very deep. But how big was hockey in the area before the Canes came in? I wonder how big the IceCaps fan base actually was and what kind of crowds they were drawing? And how many of those fans are still around 15 years later?

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be cool if more IceCaps gear were available (I like minor league baseball gear a lot more than MLB gear). I'm just wondering how practical it would be from a business perspective as compared to the Whale which has become somewhat of an iconic national brand.

edit: I looked it up and announced average attendance ranged between 3091 and 5062 for the years they were in Raleigh (I ignored the last partial season they were there). No idea how that translates to likely number of fans still in the area 15 years later.

And most of the people still in the area probably are far more invested in the Canes then they were in the IceCaps- I suspect the market for merch is quite small. But if the stuff they have now sells well (and I mean, that sweatshirt is half the cost of the same sweatshirt with Canes branding) they'll probably do more.

Jerseys, with their embroidered patches and whatnot are pretty damn expensive to produce. I don't think the market for replicas that would exceed the quality of even most on-ice ECHL jerseys of that era is very large.

She hates me too. She will fit right in.

ETA - guess I'm not getting good seats for 50 bucks or less any more - I paid less to go to the Stars game this year. Oof.
My sister and her husband are flying in from the west coast next week and they had mentioned wanting to go to the BOS game.

I feel like resale tickets are stupid expensive compared to even two years ago. Although it doesn’t help that it’s BOS, on a Sunday 5pm. I’m thinking we might just cozy up to the bar at the local watering hole and catch the game on TV instead. Added bonus of not having to deal with a ton of hammered BOS fans.

I watch all the game prices on ticpic or ticketmaster. Consistently the games that go up a l lot in price are Pittsburgh and Boston
