Ok, without a legit #2 center on this team and lets for the sake of argument say we don't get one are we likely going to be a contender in a couple of years?
It has long been my position that we cannot sleep on the Zibanejad question. He's had concussions, he was a late bloomer, he's already 27.
If we have designs on being a contender "for a decade," (when Mika would be 37 but Kakko and Lafreniere only like 28-29) then there has to be another top center option in the fold, and now is better since later it will only be harder to acquire.
That task got easier today because you can win with a Derek Stepan as your #1 center, maybe, when he's got 80 point Kakko on one side, 90 point Lafreniere on the other, and Panarin flanked by Kravtsov on a second line.
But nonetheless, I think it's important to get another center now. We don't know for sure what Chytil is. We don't need to have Crosby/Malkin but if Zibanejad were to get injured or to prematurely decline, without having at least kind of a Getzlaf type in there, that could be trouble.
Lundell is a perfect candidate. Defensively responsible, intangibles, seems to have the potential to be a #1 while being a safe bet as a high level #2.
But I've maintained that guys like Strome and Buch are meaningless to us long term. They only mattered if you were trying to win in 2019 and 2020, which we shouldn't really have been doing.
It all paid off today, but it made Buch and Strome even less important. They need to be liquidated with whatever else, Georgiev included, to get like a sub-23 year old center who can be 1-2 or 1a-1b with Zibanejad down the middle.
Keller? Nylander? Zegras? Lundell? I'm open to suggestions. I'm not open to saying "F it, we have Zibanejad, and Chytil will be the #2." We don't know that.
