So strange that every couple of years Mark Messier's name gets mentioned on either the coaching side or the business side. Then he dissapears like a fart in the wind. JD touched on him in the Michael Kay interview, but didn't really elaborate at all. Why isn't Mess working for the Organization already? Is there something they don't like here?
The fact that he doesn't do anything to actually deserve these positions...like get experience or work his way up?. The guys just wants key positions handed to him on a silver platter.

pure speculation here but my assumption is that mark doesn't want a job and its just the media bring him up cause his name draws attention...the rangers hire former players all the time, if he wanted a job they would find something for him. and if he wanted to coach he would be coaching somewhere gaining experience
Messier actively said he was interested in the president's job with..I think Michael kay

was messier on or was that when they asked JD about the media bringing up messier? And his actions say he isn't interested because he's done nothing to make himself qualified

In an organization that wants to preach accountability and earning what you get, why would you hire Mark Messier? He retired what, 15 years ago? He has done nada in regards to learning the craft of a coach or a front office man. The team won the cup 25 years ago. You don't get a guaranteed spot running the entire franchise because of that. He's never been involved with a team in the salary cap era. Why would anyone think he could just step in here and succeed?

How does “No Shortcuts” mean Panarin? What exactly is vague or ambiguous about that?
How does panarin equal a shortcut?
That’s the vague and ambiguous part.
But you clearly are adamant in panarin being a win now move so there’s no part to continue. Hence the stubborn comment. :)

I’m stubborn too, but I’ve always been very good at being able to play devils adovscte (my cousin taught me to think of the other side of things via that premise) and also I pride myself in being able to admit when I’m wrong. Yes I am head strong yes I am stubborn, and those can be admirable positive traits, so long as your able to step outside yourself and see when you are wrong or might be wrong.

There is literally nothing vague or ambiguous about the term “shortcut”. Panarin is a shortcut.

Look being real for a second and not playing internet banter. Your wrong about what your saying. The term ‘shortcut’ isn’t ambiguous? What the heck else is it but ambiguous. Shortcut could mean so many different things to you or me or JD or JG.

See what happens is some show themselves as objective and worth the time of day to talk with, and some show themselves as ignorant

I think some folks are underestimating how long this rebuild, retooling whatever you want to describe it as is going to take. Especially after watching this season and the playoffs with how things panned out for some of the better teams on paper. They're maybe one more season away from being back in the playoffs and once the defense is solidified they'll take off and start doing some serious damage.

and thats gonna take 2-4 years

I have it down as at least a 3 to 5 year timeline before the defense is passable. Staal, Shattenkirk, and Smith are around for two more years taking up space. I think one will be traded or bought out this summer, whether we like it or not. Shattenkirk will be given an opportunity to rebuild some trade value. With the lack of good NHL level RHD options at the moment, he's on the Rangers roster until the end of his contract. Maybe he builds up enough trade value to be dealt for a pick at the 2020 or 2021 deadline.

Staal can have value in summer 2020 or deadline 2021 with half retained. Teams will always look for defensive depth at the deadline for the playoffs. Staal at half retained is more than palatable for a team going for it. Ironically enough, I can see Carolina adding him as a depth piece to make a run.

In the meantime, I see the following as the ETA for our defensive prospects:

Fox: Midseason 2019-20. I think they'll try to keep him under 31 games unless he blows his competition out of the water.

Lindgren: First call up from Hartford in case of injury. Can see him as trade bait to get a guy they really like this summer or next.

Hajek: He'll be on the team to start 2019 provided he's healthy. Christmas call up at the latest if the Rangers fail to deal or buy out Smith.

Miller: Fall 2020

Lundkvist: Fall 2021 or 2022. He'll spend another two seasons in Sweden at least. Maybe some AHL time at first.

Keane: Fall 2021. AHL in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Ragnarsson: Fall 2022. Long shot to make the NHL club, IMO.

Gross: See Ragnarsson

So basically, we're many, many years away from the young guys getting some experience and coming together to formulate a competent unit.

Or you wait until you know what you have with those picks, or at least a clearer picture since we have almost no defense, and then augment with UFA big ticket items when you have the cap room to go big game hunting

I want no part of Karlsson but will consider Panarin

The dictionary definition of shortcut is “An accelerated way of doing or achieving something.” If you think that’s ambiguous when he says “no shortcuts” you have an extremely low IQ.

somewhat ironic on the argument over 'shortcuts'...probably the biggest shortcut we can take is to be a lottery team again hoping for a top 5 pick and finding a way to unload staal & shattenkirk within the next 2 years and replace them with a 25-26 year old RHD that can join skjei as the veteran on the blueline

signing someone that gets us to pick 10th probably slows the process down even if it makes next year more fun to watch

Rykov and Reunanen are also in the mix. Rykov as early as this fall.

Hahah says the guy who doesn’t realize it’s not you who determines what is or isn’t a shortcut. In my mind what your saying is being fabricated by what you want and not reality. Panarin’s a 27 yo ppg player with low mileage who’s game and body doesn’t seem to be wearing down. You create Kreider for a haul, sign panarin with the cap space and then him be your go-to player to help these kids develop. Where it’s supposedly a shortcut to again. Or is the equation the panarin= should be cup contenders or should expect to be.

And before you question my IQ, I can tell you, I actually have quite a above average IQ, plus I’m real world smart. And you continue to just come across like an ignorant person sitting somewhere behind their phone or computer
