and thats gonna take 2-4 years
I have it down as at least a 3 to 5 year timeline before the defense is passable. Staal, Shattenkirk, and Smith are around for two more years taking up space. I think one will be traded or bought out this summer, whether we like it or not. Shattenkirk will be given an opportunity to rebuild some trade value. With the lack of good NHL level RHD options at the moment, he's on the Rangers roster until the end of his contract. Maybe he builds up enough trade value to be dealt for a pick at the 2020 or 2021 deadline.
Staal can have value in summer 2020 or deadline 2021 with half retained. Teams will always look for defensive depth at the deadline for the playoffs. Staal at half retained is more than palatable for a team going for it. Ironically enough, I can see Carolina adding him as a depth piece to make a run.
In the meantime, I see the following as the ETA for our defensive prospects:
Fox: Midseason 2019-20. I think they'll try to keep him under 31 games unless he blows his competition out of the water.
Lindgren: First call up from Hartford in case of injury. Can see him as trade bait to get a guy they really like this summer or next.
Hajek: He'll be on the team to start 2019 provided he's healthy. Christmas call up at the latest if the Rangers fail to deal or buy out Smith.
Miller: Fall 2020
Lundkvist: Fall 2021 or 2022. He'll spend another two seasons in Sweden at least. Maybe some AHL time at first.
Keane: Fall 2021. AHL in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
Ragnarsson: Fall 2022. Long shot to make the NHL club, IMO.
Gross: See Ragnarsson
So basically, we're many, many years away from the young guys getting some experience and coming together to formulate a competent unit.
