Or why not NYC (or close to it)? Philly and Toronto has their farm teams close. Seems like it would be a gigantic advantage to have it close by, even share training facility.

That is another thing I never have understood about pro sports in the US. Why have the farm team some other place?

I think there were tentative plans to get the farm team closer to NYC.

Believe it was:

Isles to Barclay's Center
Renovate Nassau
Move Sound Tigers to Nassau to soothe the bitter LI Isles fans
Move Wolfpack to Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport (Where the Sound Tigers were based)

Bridgeport is only 50 mins away via Uber from the practice facility, 1.5 hours away via Uber from the Garden, just under 2 hours via Metro North Railroad to the Garden.

When the Isles move to Belmont, Nassau is a whopping 20 minute drive from the Nassau Coliseum, 50 min public transportation ride.

These moves would benefit both teams, I wish it had been done earlier, I'd be going to a lot more wolf pack games

We had really high flying plans when we moved the Binghamton franchise to Hartford. It was meant to be a first class AHL franchise that would draw big numbers, ex Whalers would get a NHL team in the Rangers and an opportunity to follow its farm team close by.

It’s been a total disaster. There is only 3-4 teams with lower attendance than the Wolf Packs. The community don’t like the team. It’s just beyond repair. Something must be done about it. Slats was too tired to deal with it.

What is the solution? Someone tell me one. Moving to a place nobody else want won’t help it one bit. Heck, the Florida suggestion is the best I’ve heard. Problem is a NYR affiliate in Florida would draw more than the Panthers — would Bettman allow it? ;)

It's not the team that is the problem. It's not even the area that is the problem -- It's the decline of the area that the government has done nothing about. Capitol Towns are supposed to be upkept, classy neighborhoods. The Government in Connecticut has not invested anything back into Hartford, so many businesses have chosen to leave the area.

Hartford is nothing like what it was in the 1990's. Have you been?

It's run down, it's old, there is nothing happening on weekends other than the 3 main bars across from the arena and the 2 dive bars around town. Several restaurants and clubs have been through several owners in the past few years, there is minimal retail commerce, there is a theater that does not show anything of originality (no reason to go there).

Crime is higher than it used to be, the poverty rate is definitely higher (there are a lot of homeless people), thus the area is not the safest. Parking lots are all a rip off -- lots across the street from the arena charge as much as $20 to park for events... $20 for AHL game parking is insane. You can park a few blocks away for $7, but again, this is supposed to be a kid friendly environment, but now its a high crime zone, so how motivated are you to bring your kids there?

Ironically, that petty 3-4k attendance number is the only thing that Hartford has left to keep the city bolstered up... Beyond that, there is some corporate and that's about it--that and the The Xfinity Amphitheater is a couple miles away. West Hartford is a very nice town, but there's minimal public transportation around, so you're f***ed without a car.

Hartford as a WHOLE is the problem, not the team

Is Kingston or Poughkeepsie that much more expensive for a single no-kids house-hold that is out travelling 50% of his time? Rent+food (when you are on the road the food is free). Answer no: Apartments for Rent in Poughkeepsie NY | Apartments.com ;)

Piughkeepsie is not only a dump, but it's the middle of f***ing nowhere. There's absolutely NOTHING going on up there.

If Kenny would want to do it. He does a lot of stuff around the league and nationally in addition to doing multiple other sports.

MSG has the bankroll to pay him, he could still do NBC games just like Sam splits his time between the NFL and the NHL. It would also compliment the Knicks being in NY previously announced by his father Marv

Howie Rose has pined for this job for years. Wonder of he would still be interested.

Albert heading to MSNBC to eventually replace Emrick

I thought it was Forslund?

He is, however that statement LITERALLY describes Panarin to a tee

So strange that every couple of years Mark Messier's name gets mentioned on either the coaching side or the business side. Then he dissapears like a fart in the wind. JD touched on him in the Michael Kay interview, but didn't really elaborate at all. Why isn't Mess working for the Organization already? Is there something they don't like here?

pure speculation here but my assumption is that mark doesn't want a job and its just the media bring him up cause his name draws attention...the rangers hire former players all the time, if he wanted a job they would find something for him. and if he wanted to coach he would be coaching somewhere gaining experience

there is a small amount of bad blood between Mess and the organization, on opening night of 1995 before the Stanley cup banner ceremony mark held out and would not dress and the play the game unless his contract was renegotiated, he forced dolan to re-write his contract minutes before the game, then he bolted in 1997 for Vancouver for more money, he was brought back but that was merely for nostalgia and the fans request, he is not a favorite of Dolan's, plus he has zero experience in managing a team.

Guess crossing Dolan would be the larger issue.

Lots of ex players get involved somehow w/out any experience. Leetch, Graves, Beuk, Drury etc.

Mess had well over 10 years to go get some experience doing anything hockey related. The larger issue for me is he did not put in any time so I have zero inclination to reward him with anything unless he's willing to start at the bottom and work his way up

Is anyone else surprised with how resolute JD has sounded in the interviews so far? Hardly seem like a guy who is content to come in and be a marionette/puppet leader in front of Gorton. He even managed to give a somewhat OK explanation for why he brought Torts in, albeit it does show that he is one of those types who just don't quite 'get' what the modern game is about, like Slats, Messier and co.

Why does Jarmo get credit for doing all the good in CBJ and not get the credit for hiring Torts?

"A lot of work" doesn't sound like someone who thinks this team is close to doing anything. "Patience and Resolve" hmm where have I heard that before. "We're going to be in a battle to get this club better" This sounds like a guy supporting a move to bring in Panarin for 11 million a season? Would love to see the mental gymnastics involved in spinning this quote that way.
Just yours in spinning it your way. I’m being objective in saying, there are parts of JDs comment that sound in favor of a panarin and then parts like you’ve brought up which you could connect to him not being interested in panarin.

Personally I think he was referring to karlsson in one of his quotes and appealing to season-ticket holders who would want the club to spend big big money to force this thing ahead.

Don’t think he’s talking panarin. But you could be right however your assertation that surely it means no panarin and haha lets see the mental gymnastics, so pre-mature and flat guessing

Just like all of us.

There is literally nothing to read into what he's saying about having patience, how this team has a lot of work to do, how this team needs to have resolved that could reasonable be interpreted by anyone with a firm grasp of reality to say that this means we'll be aggressive in signing free agents. It is incredibly cut and dry. Teams that have patience don't sign players for 11 million dollars. That would be the opposite of patience.

I don't want to read back. Just explain it to me. If you've explained it before it should be easier to do it again. Explain to me how "Patience" equates to signing a big ticket UFA, please.
Oh my god. Your so stubborn. Holy cow

My speculative guess would be he’s not willing to start at the bottom/middle and the organization isn’t dumb enough to put him straight into a top position.

How does “No Shortcuts” mean Panarin? What exactly is vague or ambiguous about that?

Kenny will be NBC's next lead voice once Doc decides to hang it up. He's their current #2 PXP man as evidenced by always getting a conference final assignment.

Kenny, I believe, will be the Rangers next voice after Sam. He may or may not back up Breen on the Knicks when that day comes. He just turned 50 not too long ago or will be turning 50 soon. Howie Rose is in his mid-60's now so it doesn't make any sense to hire him to replace Sam. He'll remain on the Mets.

The question then becomes who replaces Kenny on the radio side? Don La Greca would seem the shoe in but with his Michael Kay show commitments and young twins it not make sense for Donnie Pucks to be full time on the Rangers. Plus, he's serviceable as a back up but I wouldn't consider him a great PXP man.

It's the Sather/Don Maloney principle. When there are multiple decision makers in an organization, you assign credit to the one you like for all the good moves and blame to the one you don't for the bad ones. This is basic stuff.

That's life man. All the good decisions to who you like, the bad decisions to the person you think is a dick. I am man enough to admit I will do that until the day I die. Lol
