Really enjoying the cherrypicking going on here re: JD's words in relation to signing Panarin/EK65.

Neat. Guess people are looking for any small thing to validate their narratives.

JD did a pretty good job leaving the options as open as they’ve been this whole time. He’s got the FO-speak down pat.

There's a whole lot of spin around here April - June when the Rangers don't make the playoffs suiting whatever argument anyone is making. Make a hell of a wash machine.

Except for when he said they were in a good position to be aggressive.

That can mean so many things.

Could mean aggressive in the FA Market, could be aggressive in trading players for picks, could mean being aggressive in trading picks for higher picks, could mean being aggressive in trading players and/or picks for other players.

Thats a pretty ambiguous statement. The one @Riche16 posted is pretty specific.

I would be 100% good with a basic repeat of what happened this season.

Team battles and stays in most games.

Veterans unloaded for high futures.

Go Steph Curry from downtown with the ping pong ball.

The next offseason, we start making real moves.

I’ll repost for the new page for @Riche16

“It has to make sense. Giving a big contract to a FA when your team isn't ready for it isn't good for him or for you"
Sounds likes a guy advising we sign up for a big FA? But to some people I’m the one spinning his words.

Lol that part does not count. You stop itttt

Its absolutely open for interpretation. Which is why making such a statement that it shuts the door on one player or another, one move or another, is a humongous reach

JD has been here less than a week.

Lets wait a bit for him to settle in with Gorton and Drury as they devise their plan for the offseason

Not exactly. If JD feels like X UFA makes sense, then it’s at least partly because he feels like the team is ready for it. If he doesn’t feel like the player makes sense, then it’s at least partly because he doesn’t feel like the team is ready for it.

That quote plays both sides of the topic. Just like saying they’re in a good place to be aggressive while also saying they need to practice patience and resolve. Patience, by the way, doesn’t necessarily mean waiting to make a move. It can also mean not rushing players, etc. Or it can mean both.

Like @Irishguy42 said, you can interpret anything he said to validate your narrative. In other words, it’s best not to interpret at all. He said what he said... we’ll see what they do.

So when JD spoke of patience and not believing in short cuts, how in your view does that jibe with being aggressive?

And patience can also mean not expecting immediate results. Yes, a lot of what JD said is open to interpretation, but, if I hear numerous references to patience, hard work and not taking short cuts, with one mention of being aggressive in a vague manner with no specifics, the picture I’m looking at doesn’t scream going hard after a big ticket UFA. But, that’s just me.

Does this "patience" apply to JD's plan as well? He's barely been on the job. If he's already decided on his plan for the future of the organization then he hasn't demonstrated the patience needed to figure it out. How much do you think he's actually accomplished so far in a maximum of 4 days some of were spent with actually going back to NY and such.

As a borderline playoff team last year did trading tons of futures for Duchene/Dzingel indicate this sort of patience?

He also said for when it makes sense and fits a need. Panarin also fits those.

You can make an argument that he is also for big free agents, it just needs to be looked at a bit.

:dunno:

It was definitely not an anti-big UFA signing statement. But I'm just seeing people quoting the first sentence and calling it a day.

I’m just going to say... I don’t really have a view on what he said, but I’ll give you an example of what it *could* mean.

They’re in a place to be aggressive at going after high-end talent that will help the team long-term. That could be UFA, trade, offer sheet, whatever. At the same time, whatever happens with that, if they get to camp and Kravtsov and/or Fox aren’t ready for the NHL, they’re going to show some patience and not take shortcuts by keeping them up with the Rangers just because of their status or the price paid to get them. See? Aggressiveness and patience, simultaneously.

Maybe he really does believe this isn’t the time for any UFAs at all. But that’s not what he said today.

You don’t think JD was brought in here because he signed off on the plan that’s already in place?
