You play a forward on the point to distribute to shooters, specifically a defenseman with a bomb of a shot.
You don't play a forward on the point when three other skaters on the ice like Stepan, MSL and MZA or Brassard are all playmakers.
Richards on the point made sense when McDonagh was shooting. The injury obviously prevents Mcdonagh from shooting, and he has a very hard shot.
When you put that timid wimp Moore on the point, you essentially have four guys who don't like to shoot, and the playmaker running the point (Richards) ends up taking most of the shots anyway, thus nullifying the purpose of having him on the point in the first place.
Nobody likes to shoot. The PP was at its best when McDonagh was set up for onetimers, and he kept PKers honest.
Put Diaz in. Moore isn't that good outside of a few pinches.
If they lose Game 2 and the PP stinks again, it would be criminal to not make that change.
Brian Leetch used to play 30 min games. Chelios. Hell, Suter still does.
Make Diaz play with Klein on the left, but as the game gets tighter, Staal and Mcdonagh can each play 5-6 mins more a game swapping out with Diaz on the 3rd pair so Klein can play his natural position late in games.
It's tricky but it's been done before. Beukeboom played the right side and was suspended for Game 6 against the Devils for a hit on Richer. Leetch played that whole game (with a shoulder injury) with Lidster and Karpovstev -- their 6th and 7th dmen.
