free tickets? tickets for 5 euro? free jerseys? You'd better ask those who were in Minsk. Nobody granted me free ticket:(. The cheepest was about 10 euro. It was definetly the best tournament for the funs and profitable to organizers

As for the "fake" finish fans - i was one of them, becouse i as well as many dinamo-minsk fans, is a personal fan of Karalahti

Swedish commentator noticed that halfway through many games the arenas are far from filled then in the end it's suddenly full house.

Really long hotdog lines?

not only. our police was ordered to seek bombs - it was hard to get to the arenas((

As for the crowds on non-belorussian matches - it was impossible to buy ticket to russian, lanvian or belorussian match, so a lot of people had been buying tickets on any game available. More over, many wanted to see Chizhovka arena. It's new arena in minsk, looking fantastic

I hope they will not follow the practise with free tickets next year in Prague, otherwise there will be huge lineup in front of empty arena after first period:)))

What's all the fuss with the free tickets? They did it, so they did, you don't want do it - don't....

IMHO, any host country should go around schools and beg kids to accept FRA-ITA tickets

Namejs, let's leave the politics to politicians, moreover you do not understand this and do not want to understand. Just remember - ticket's pricing were determined by the organizers together with IIHF. The IIHF had banned giving away free tickets. Yes, some games had 100-200 soldiers, students or pupils, but they were not included in the summary statistics because they did not spent money at all. An attendance have been calculated by electronic system when you attach your ticket to the wicket.

I'm not complaining about the free tickets, I think that is is great that people who aren't perhaps that wealthy can watch great hockey and and at the same time can afford groceries. My objection is regarding the thread title itself, that this is a valid attendance record for the world championship. It isn't. Canada would break this record in a couple of days if they went about it the same way. Good for the Belorussians but the record is bullcrap.

Well, we will never know if they did it just for purpose to beat the record or they just did not want leave empty seats. Anyway, setting aside politics, it was good for games and Belarus truly has a new record. Withou any "if"....

The tickets being cheaper does not make this attendance record any less valid.

If Belarus is as dirt-poor as some people here make it out to be, it's doubtful the tickets were even cheaper when compared to disposable income in the country.

I doubt people were forced to attend the games. They gave out a lot of free tickets in Finland in 2012 too and I don't see anything bad about it.

Nope. They dropped the prices for some games after the public and media uproar but there was no massive free ticket campaign(or even small ones) because nothing is free in Finland.
