Guys you make it seem like Belarus is horrible. It has a similar standard of living as Poland. They have one of the lowest debts in Europe, and Minsk is a clean city with great roads. I live in Vancouver but have travelled a lot. Sure there may be some inconsistentcies but acting as if people had no choice but to watch the game, I disagree.

It's been a great tournament in terms of attendance and atmosphere, so kudos to Belarus for organizing it. Really makes a difference compared to previous years to see full and enthusiastic crowds instead of empty seats. This tournament feels like the hockey and the fans are what matter and not the money, unlike with Kummola running things. Though I very much doubt the claim that the tournament is not going to be profitable too.

Seeing as the previous record holder was the Czech republic in 2004 with less games played and seeing as the tourney will most likely be played there next year with basically two home nations (Czechs in Prague and Slovaks in Ostrava*) there should be at least a theoretical chcance to break the record again next year.

*The Czech organisers will use their right to move one team to a different group shall Czech republic/Slovakia end up in the same group

In a free-market situation the attendance rate in Belarus would be MUCH lower.
Well, eff free market then.

Essentially, the IIHF made profits from the ticket sales through government sponsorship, which can only happen in Belarus (or other authoritarian regimes, potentially).
What's wrong with government sponsorship? It has absolutely nothing to do with authoritarianism.

No matter which way you slice it, non-paying fans is better than non-paying empty seats.

This has nothing to do with the standard of living in Belarus.

Also, you're 100% wrong. Their economy is in shambles and to a large extent relies on Russian donations (essentially Russia is 'exporting' oil for free and Belarus re-exports it to the West for its market value). 100%+ inflation rate a couple of years ago, a high unemployment rate, $432 average salary. And, no, the standard of living is not similar to the one in Poland.

Past couple of years the US games were totally empty but this year the atmosphere has been fantastic.

Haters and jealous people gonna hate.

Not all of them, but a lot of them.

The prices should be set according to market demand. It's as simple as that.

You can't hand out free tickets and have a profitable tournament at the same time either.

Why do they have to sell the tickets. Free tickets sound great!

Yeah. Great tournaments hehe :)

I almost lost interest in international hockey after those two tournaments. The best WHC is Germany 2011.

I hope it returns to Canada. It was fun having it here. Canada was dominant in the 00's in this tournament, or one of the dominant teams. After the Silver medal in 2009, we pretty much suck now. Having it here might renew the interest.

Yeah, but u should use that big arena in Hamilton and a football stadium. Commonwealth stadium for example. Edmonton and Hamilton could host a whc??

In Conjunction with Hamilton - Toronto would work. Edmonton is too small. We're also getting the pan-am games, so more venues.

There's also Vancouver. :p:

Free tickets or not, the atmosphere has been fantastic. Good job, Belarus! This is how the tournament should feel and look like! Seeing great crowds instead of empty seats is great for hockey and the tournament.

 why are you so mad? Do you honestly believe all those fans there are legit and not hired to be there by Lukashenko?

Illuminati must be behind this year's good attendance in WC.

I personally prefer more than 10,000 fans at each game (even if they had the tickets for free) than games with less than 5000 people in Stockholm and Helsinki where it disgusted me.

Amazing accomplishment by Minsk! I expect this record will be challenged by the city of Prague next year. Each time the event was hosted in Prague a new record for the most part has been made. Beautiful city and I expect thousands of fans to make the trip.

Next year could actually see two new attendance records,

World Juniors in Montreal/Toronto and Prague 2015, shaping up to be a historic year for IIHF's main events.

A strange and sad thing then, that Jagr decided this was his last WC.
What a blast for the Czechs , having JJ Captain the team at home ice. Also I wish he ended his amazing career home in Kladno where it all started.
Luckily for The Czechs they got to see him during last year's lock out. But I hope he leave the NHL before he become NHL's and ice hockeys answer to Ozzy:D
Stop when your still on top.

I also noticed a ton of personalized German flags around the arena in that game. Granted that might be a very German thing to do (bath towels and beach chairs, anyone?) that many other nations don't practice but I interpreted it as seeing a lot of German fans.

If only I was as lucky as all those Belarusians getting free tickets. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

And a great way to increase hockey fans in Belarus.

Just like Mexico and Canada.

Maybe I over exaggerated , but Minsk is great and I grew up in Bialystok and spent a few moths in Warsaw. Maybe I jut enjoyed the city a little to much but both countries host great women;), no doubt about that! Hope we can agree about that? Will be interested to see how the tournament will be in Prague.
