Assets depreciate.
This.
If you take a guy at #5 overall -- any guy at all -- you don't automatically assume you can trade him 4 yours later to whatever team has the #5 OA.
Plus the fact that the 3 other most likely outcomes were:
1) Re-sign him for more than he's worth
2) get a late 3rd -- at best -- as a compensatory pick two years from now
3) get nothing for him because we spent enough on other FAs that we don't qualify for compensation

I think a second -- from a lousy team (that still beat the shit of us), making it almost a 1st -- is more than anybody had a right to expect.

Hard to say this, but congrats to the FO for not ****ing this one up.

Harris is going Nuclear, I love it. Young was such an enigma, he disappears for EVERY game against a good line.

And you’re out to f***in lunch if you think otherwise

Yup.

I’d imagine they are not done. Gibby should get a 4th at least. Same with Samuel. Then resign Curl.

So we gave San Francisco Trent Williams and Chase Young for two thirds and a fifth. I want to die.
Trent trade was robbery but the Young trade, he’s damaged goods. They got something for him.

Like, how do you not relieve RR of GM duties if you're trading the 2 OA for what will be a late 3rd just a couple of years later. Just screams with blaring sirens we f***ed up our best chance to improve the team through the draft that we had in the last decade

He’s still just 24 though. Seems like they’re punting on him too early. Maybe they’re tired of his shit but this is a gut punch. Who else on this team had the upside of Chase?

Not devastated by the Young move. Essentially guarantees the late 3rd comp pick had we not signed him -- which, as I said above re: Sweat, would have been in doubt anyway.

I'm also looking at all of this through the lens that it will be new group deciding how to use these assets, not Ron and the Martys.

A shit-ton of picks plus a shit-ton of cap space = culture change all the way to the field, not just in teh owners box and on the sideline.

Much needed!

I’m honestly elated with these moves. Yes I would have been curious how these ends would be with a remotely creative d-coordinator, but not at their price tag. I’v seen enough to know that Young is not generational. Could a better d-coordinator have gotten more out of him, sure. But if you watch his individual play, he’s nowhere in the stratosphere of the top pass rushers. You see guys like Bosa, Watt, Parsons, and Crosby who can beat a defender in a tight space, ie still holding their territory. Young can’t do that because he’s not quick enough and doesn’t have that same balance when his body is angled, so he’s easily pushed beyond the pocket. I am 100% certain we are not going to be crying over this move, at worst it will be a “good for him, he found a home as a solid d-end” reaction over time.

Harris is looking long term and clearly has a vision. Finally. It also confirms that Rivera et al are gone, gone, gone. I think Rivera’s no challenge snafu sealed his fate.

RR isn’t the GM but, clearly, these trades weren’t his call. So RR has been relieved of his front office duties.

We may be, but we're also cutting another link to the failed product that's been rolled out, and saving ourselves from a messy negotiation with a Richard Williams-style dad, who's a local -- whcih would make it even messier.
Blank slate!

11 good players on defense with competent coaching will go a lot farther. I suspect the new FO will get some nice pieces in FA.

Welp .. wish they kept Chase but ya gotta breaks some eggs to make an omelette.

I dont think we'd get a comp pick for Chase bc we declined his option and with all our cap space (pre trades), we would probably be active in FA and offset anyway

edit -- and please please please, lets not pretend like we all didnt want Chase 100% w the second pick

I'm glad they're selling. This team isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I wish they had done more.

Just curious, but this trade makes no sense for the Bears IMO. What do they get aside from a 27 year old player who's going to be old by the time they're any good?
