Said this several times so sorry if it sounds like I'm on repeat here but I'm a UNC guy. I saw all of Sam's starts from beginning to end in college and he's always taken a lot of sacks. Taking 90 a year isn't sustainable and I'm not suggesting it is but he's always going to take a lot of sacks. That said, he's also always going to throw for a ton of yards, make a ton of difficult passes and win games. He's a winner. He's got to cut down on the sacks but he's performed pretty well considering he's basically a rookie. I have no issues with how he's played up to this point and I'm excited to see how he progresses, if he can cut down on the sacks and if we can continue to build a little bit better of a line in front of him. I'm not ready to cut ties with him as the future by any means.

The sacks are on several fronts. Of course there are some on Howell but not too surprised especially with how terrible the O line is. Play calls/offense design it is harder to tell with out seeing the whole field on replay. Hilarious in the beginning of the Giants game talking about the sack total for year at the point I laughed out loud and as like it will be a feast day.

Neil Greenberg is on social media advocating for Brissett to come in. I don't see it. Howell has done well for a 3-4 team. The only really bad game he had was the Bills game. Otherwise he has looked mostly competent. A B+ for me.

Heck even with a bad start they were in position to tie late. It wasn't even his fault, Dotson dropped the easy 4th down ball

Get sacked at a historic rate and people are going to talk about it.

If he can survive I don’t care, but it’s not good for him physically.

Calling for Brissett is completely short-sighted. To what end do we bench SH and start the backup? Are you really trying to make the postseason to get a 1 and done shot? They are not beating anyone in the postseason (much less actually qualifying).

The need to let SH play out the season and if he flops, they must draft the next guy in the upcoming QB-rich draft….

I hope RR isn’t fooling himself into thinking he has a shot at an extension (short of winning a SB). Any mention of benching SH if he’s healthy, should be pushed back on by Ownership.

all 22 of the 6 sacks.

1st sack -- NYG shows 6-7 man near LOS, only have HB as extra blocker, Sam doesnt slide protection or do anything ... Sam should be calling for hot routes before he snaps it ..

he snaps it ... Bates is wide open on the shallow cross for an easy 5 .. Sam thinks he has all day (problem) .. #77 is looking for someone to block while Dexter Lawrence eats Gates for lunch.

Easy pitch and catch to Bates.

Sam responsible, Sam NEEDS to see and read the f***ing field

2nd sack - NYG show only 4, we have 5 plus a WR tucked in close does a good chip job on RE.

0:29 mark .. we have 3 guys blocking 2 guys, #77 Shaadiq Charles barrels one of the guys and lets his assignment go clean for a sack.

We had 3 guys blocking 2 guys ... wtf.

Shaadq Charles responsible

3rd sack - NYG shows 7 near LOS w an overload to the right side of our OL, we have max protect w TE and HB. Problem is TE is on our left side not right. Sam never moves guy over.

0:47 mark = RT Wylie has 2 guys and he chose the inside guy to block as he always should .. outside guy goes in clean

0:47 mark. We have 4 guys blocking 2 guys on left side and 2 guys blocking 4 guys on right side.

Sam responsible.

read the f***ign D and pressure and slide protections accordingly

Read the f***ing D pre snap Sam

A lot of the protections/slides are on the center, not the QB. Clearly they aren't being set up for proper protection based on the looks they're getting, but thats not always entirely on the QB. One thing that is entirely on the QB is to know what his center is doing in terms of sliding protections and adjust accordingly - to be in sync with his OL. It just seems like the protections are off, the blitz pickups are poor and Howell isn't fully grasping the whole protection thing either. The whole offense seems poorly coached. This ultimately falls on EB. The QB and OL coaches work for him.

Ouch….

I think on the second sack, you can see Charles misses the stunting defender who goes right into his spot, and Charles reaction sorta shows he knows he missed his pickup. Not to pin it all on EB or the OL coach, but the constant slow starts also says "not prepared" to me. Is it not pretty much every game they've come out really slow? Only a few nice 2nd half comebacks got them to three wins.

I am done w Charles, Gates and Wylie.

These 3 would not be starting on any of the other 31 teams. Maybe .. maybe Gates on a desperate team but he wouldnt be their week 1 starter.

It's a mixed bag on who's to blame but I do think Sam has a chance to get the ball out when he's feeling pressure and instead instinctively turtles to protect himself and prepare for impact.

Maybe that's one reason we still have a QB after 7 weeks, I don't know. But a lot of other QBs in the league will find a way to sidearm it or get the ball SOMEWHERE upfield either into someone's hands or out of bounds when under that kind of pressure. Sam braces himself or at best tries to wriggle out of it.

Charles can be a pretty dominant run blocker at times, but the whole OL seems lost in pass protection and adjustments. Again maybe on the OL Coach, maybe on the center, some of it is on Howell, but its ultimately on EB to get it fixed. And its not like the entire Redskin nation of fans didn't see this all coming all offseason when they completely skimped on the OL. I'm reminded of the cost of passing on Scherff these days. Maybe not at the franchise tag level, but not finding a way to retain him long term.

This may be the best argument for sitting him, and playing JB for a bit. The sacks are snowballing because he’s just expecting to be hit. If he continues like this (and is leaving plays out there by not getting it out quicker), it’s probably doing him more harm than good keeping him in there.

Sitting and watching for a few weeks might help his long term development. We’ll see if they can start the game on Sunday with some quick reads, or roll-outs to get him feeling more comfortable.

And that Williams guy in SF. Or that Moses guy in Balt.

Nah, don’t need any of them.

Only arguable one is probably coaching. At least if your coach knows your OL sucks at pass pro they can scheme around it, run a lot, throw slants and flats and shit, etc.

as far as on the field, it's not sexy but playing with a good offensive line is a lot more like fighting from a castle wall instead of right down in the trenches

The Bengals in Burrows rookie year were a class in mitigating a shit heap line.

Very true. But Burrow almost immediately could read defenses, and was able to get the ball out quickly with timing and anticipation. Extremely rare talent as a rookie.

And yet…Jonathan Allen (and I think also Sweat) caved in Burrow’s crappy OL, ripping up his knee that year. Amazing how he recovered and went to the SB in year 2.

Anyways, if only we’d managed to lose one more game and get the 1OA pick instead of whatever Chase Young is at this point. Sigh.

EDIT: Random gambling tip - take the 5.5 that SF is laying against Cincy.

Commanders edge Chase Young to the Seahawks

Compensation: 2024 third-round pick, ’25 sixth-round pick

The No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft may be wedged out in Washington, regardless of what the Commanders decide to do. Barring some kind of bridge deal, the franchise tag may make more sense used on a different player. Sometimes, trades are for the best and Young, whose true potential was never really tapped in Washington, could find a second life under the Pete Carroll umbrella. The Seahawks are waffling between legitimate contender and team that could run out of gas and be caught by the Rams. Adding an edge presence and enriching their arsenal of rushers, who are already seventh in ESPN’s pass-rush win rate metric (although a lot of that was thanks to a slaughtering of the Giants a few weeks back) would be adding to a strength and keeping Young away from San Francisco.
