New Line combos and roster thread

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I read the thread. You propose to deal with it by patching Marner in as a utility elsewhere. That is a hell of a strategy to add minutes. As I explained, reducing Marner to Nylanders EV minutes lowers his EV playtime by around 18.5%. At those levels, Spezza still couldnt handle the workload. To make it work, we are talking about a line that runs 12 minutes at most which represents an over 35% increase in Spezza's work load (huge) and a 31% reduction in Marners EV workload (also huge). By your preseciption, Marner can sub in for an extra shift every 3rd complete rotation to make up the minutes? If not, how?
Why is this such a terrible concept? Keefe has already shown that he's comfortable making in game adjustments- why can't there be built in lines that he can turn to?

Because there are already issues with Marner playing PK and PP. You want him to juggle 4 separate assignments now from 3? Holy hell. Better to give an extra shift to Matthews, Tavares or Nylander to occasionally sub in for the third or 4th line in addition to their regular responsibilities.

This lineup is such an amazing build.

Has a characteristic that if you're not a star, you're in your prime. That's deadly.

Here's how the Leafs line up against their division rivals using GSVA (Game Score Value Added) from theathletic.com:

Not sure why Keefe keeps Ritchie, Tavares and Marner a line. They’ve been absolutely awful together these two games. Tavares and Marner haven’t really clicked in 2 years now.

I think Ritchie gets a chance with Matthews but if he doesn’t become more effective I see him on the third line with Kampf and Kase moves up.

Nylander - Matthews - Kase
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Ritchie - Kampf - Engvall
Spezza - Kerfoot - Simmonds

He wouldn't break up lines in the playoffs lol the richest hockey club on the planet deserves world class coaches and GM
THIS AINT IT
why was kase out in the final seconds of the first period ?

Nylander -- Matthews --- Kase
Bunting ----- Tavares ---- Marner
Ritchie ------ Kerfoot ---- Spezza
Engvall ------- Kampf --- Mikheyev

This is what I would like to see as well.

I would love to see what it would be like to have Spezza with Nylander and Matthews.

Did not watch the game tonight against the New York Rangers, but this is going to be a re-occurring theme this season.

Simply put, this Leafs team is not that talented, and will be middle of pack in goal scoring.

Watching tonight's game, I may have figured out at least part of the problem with our PP.

When Tavares is standing in front of their net, he doesn't seem to be interested in blocking the goalie's view. He will for a bit, but as soon as it looks like a shot is coming, he moves out of the way and looks for a deflection or rebound.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but he moves too soon, and the goalie gets enough of a clear view to stop the shot, and usually smother it.

Care to do a friendly wager on this?

Might be time to get Nylander back in front of the net.

When healthy:

Micheyev - Matthews - Nylander = FINESSE LINE
Bunting - Tavares - Marner = CRASH THE NET LINE
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase = SHUT DOWN LINE
Ritchie - Spezza - Simmonds = FOURTH LINE

I really liked our fourth line last night. They had a ton of offensive zone time and some great scoring chances.

Unless Matthews moderates this thread, I really don’t see the point in making any combo suggestions involving him.

Matthews plays with who Matthews wants to play with. And he plays for as many minutes as he wants.

If Ritchie doesn't produce:

58 34 16
15 91 88
20 64 25
47 19 24
They might still try this week how our heavy weight thug Ritchie finna score in the dirty first line sire. After this week, if the sucka don't put that small black puck to the net, I don't know where Keefe putting him sire. Maybe in the dirty third line. There... Ritchie wouldn't do dirt for us. Ritchie needs to play with the big bezoys and fight for them. Drop the gloves and all. Hit that thang hard and still defend his buddies in danger. Danger like mystikal! WHAT!

Thanks, but no thanks buddy.

I bet on something everyday, have enough action as it is.

Hockey is generally not something I bet, because I don't want to find out who is playing goal. I did it one year, too much work.

I just wait for the coach to give us the low down, then we unload, lol.

When Babcock was here, Bozak and van Riemsdyk were still around, that was like three lines that had a 20 goal scorer. Kadri had two seasons with 30 goals. They also had Gardiner supporting the rush, he had the wheels to get there.

There are a lot fewer goals in this lineup, and no one is going to play the role of Gardiner jumping into the rush. There was Rielly and Gardiner, now there is only Rielly, and that makes it easier to key on him, to let the other team to shut him down.

The pandemic season is not a good indication of what the talent is like on this team. It is no secret Canadian teams are not that good right now. Has been like that for a few years.

Look at a player like McDavid, he is one of the best players in the league, yet Edmonton has only been in the playoffs a couple of times in his career? Forget, but that was not a great team. Seems to me this Toronto team is the next Edmonton.
