Maybe so but its got to be the right core and for the right price no? Half the cap on 4 similar forwards doesnt seem like the best use resources.
That’s a different convo for sure. Do we have any reason to think that they’d flip one of the 4 for another impact guy? Or just some middling filler?

Well, based on guys under contract…

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Kampf - Reaves
McMann - Holmberg - Lafferty

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Timmins

Murray
Woll

Good thing we still have the 2024 first round pick. Decent chance the Leafs will take a step or two back if they aren't able to add anything significant.

Take a peek at how other teams have structured their salary caps. It’s becoming a league of having your core group locked up and filling out the rest.
It seemed clear to me from the time the cap was introduced, that the league would eventually evo;ve towards the star players getting all the money and the rest of a team each getting somewhere in the range 1x to 3x the minimum. It's not there yet, but it seems inevitable.

Our D is pretty bare at the moment.
I wanted Soucy really bad and I think that 3/9.75 is a great deal for both sides considering it’s wacky day. Treliving slept on that if he’d have considered Toronto, which you have to believe he absolutely would have signed here considering he went to a tire fire like the Jets

With the roster we currently have, we’re probably looking at a spot anywhere from 5th to 8th in the East. Pretty sad given this team as of right now will finally be taking a step back after so many years and only have 1 playoff round win to show for it…

Nylander has been surplus value the whole time aside the first year when he got in way late. Matthews deal is exactly in line with what every other elite/generational 1c top 3 pick signed for coming off their elc relative to cap% in the cap era.
Only mcdavid went 8 at the time.
Sid, malkin, staal, toews, stamkos, Tavares, Nash, Kane, Kopitar all went 5-6 years at similar cap% relative to the year they signed.
Natural cap increases would have Matthews 11.6 looking outstanding Vs a 90-95m cap.
Marner was a whiff
Matthews reset the post ELC market and your ignoring that

McDavid, Mack, Eichel, Drai all signed for 7-8 year deals.

The other guys were before the 2013 CBA.

Matthews deal was not a good one at the time of signing due to way to little term obtained. He didnt live up to his deal in year 1 or 4 and lived/exceeded it in years 2 and 3. We will see hiw year 5 goes

I would actually not be so against finally letting more Marlies play. It would even be about time.

What I regret, however, is that I have spent the last 3 hours pointlessly in this thread. Well ... ;-)

Our playoff chances are pretty bare at the moment…. I see, as of this moment with this shit team not changing except losing 3 quality grit guys like ROR, Schenn, and Acciari, we’ll maybe in by a point ala the Panthers and then a RD1 exit, yet again.

I dont see many options at the moment unfortunately 😕
Depth would be a start.

There were smaller signing like Lucas Carlsson, Boqvist, Fallby

Dumba can be good, but his next deal probably isn't going to be great.

Imo a closer comparable is Dion Phaneuf but with a lower hockey iq
That's a good comparable. He has moments, but he didn't get the Dumba55 name for no reason.

Like I said last year, in a flat cap, it's not only how much you improve but how much others around you get worse. So Toronto's relative position will be tied to whether Florida has health issues/hangover from their cup finals run, whether Tampa falls into a ditch, whether Boston falls into a ditch and how Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo grow into legitimate playoff teams, or not.

Things are no longer in Toronto's control, and this program won't have both hands on the steering wheel until the Tavares contract is off the books in 2025. If this was EA Sports, 2023 and 2024 would be "sim forward" seasons.

How many 11m d or G make an impact relative to their cap hit?

Cry about it
Thanks for making my point again.… this was easy. The issue is only partly the team. it’s actually Toronto media and fans who hound players for innocuous reasons like in no other market except Montreal. How many FA’s are the habs signing today? Then you expect them to pay higher taxes on top of the harassment. These guys have options and Ontario boy ROR jumped ship.

it creates an obvious competitive disadvantage aside from everything else already mentioned.

Our D is pretty bare at the moment.
Rielly-liljegren
McCabe-brodie
Gio-timmins
There’s 6 nhl D (definitely not the best group) without doing a thing. Right now there’s an entire 3rd line missing up front with a pretty soft top LW situation.
Jarnkrok Matthews marner
Knies Tavares nylander

Lafferty kampf reaves
