Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Kirk, 26 years old with a career WAR of 9.0 over 1563 PAs got $58M over 5 years.

Raleigh is 28 with a career WAR of 11.5 over 1760 PAs got $100M over 5 years.

Kirk's deal is an absolute steal. Similar players for almost half the price.

Feel free to tell me to piss off, but I'm a big Jays fan and wouldn't mind shooting the shit with you guys in here a bit during the season!

(I'm a Bruins fan, so feel free to tell me my team sucks and to hit the road, I won't argue that)
I have to say being a canadiens fan the posters here do a good job keeping hockey talk separate from baseball

Hey, you're not the only one of that mold here lol. Brother this is my refuge from that shit heap.

Pros: this team doesn't suck as hard as watching the Bruins

cons: there's no NeelyDan here to be stoned as f*** and then spit philosophical bars when he sobers up.

Over the last 4 years it looks comparable but over the last 2-3 years, not as much. Raleigh is probably a top-3 catcher in MLB right now when you factor in bat/defense/durability (caught the most games in MLB last year) and age.

But Kirk's deal still looks totally fine against Raleigh's.

Kirk is sill just getting into his prime. The odds that his bat improves are pretty good versus someone who is 33+

This year is already signed and baseball doesng rip up deals (years are only canceled with options/opt-outs). This is 1 of arb plus 4 of fa

Seems like this was incorrect as the Mariners just did this with Cal Raleigh. His 5.6 million January settlement for this year is now a 10 million signing bonus and 1 million salary this year under his new deal

What does the board think of spring training's players option to challenge a called ball/strike
I like the challenge system. Some tweaks needed for sure. But the ability to challenge a bad strike or ball call at a crucial point in the game is needed. Having the player being able to challenge is interesting for sure, as they may not use it wisely.

To be honest, I think it was great overall. I can't wait to see it during regular season, hopefully in 2026.
Yeah I think it was great too. Quick, no fuss or drama. I will actually miss it in the regular season. I hope they will bring it next year.

With pitch clock being an absolute success, ABS will be to I think, and it will cut down on absolute blind umps.

I liked it. Anything that can correct a bad call in a timely manner is good with me. I'd still prefer automated calls but it's a step in the right direction.

I'm not sure 2 challenges is enough. I know when tennis first brought in challenges it was 2 per set and they quickly realized that once you got 1 wrong the 2nd one was almost never used except in a break glass in case of emergencies type of situation. Wimbledon went to 3 and everyone else quickly followed their lead as it was obviously better. You also don't want too many challenges either, you might end up with a string of challenge in 1 inning that feels like it drags on rather than the quickness of 1 or 2. I didn't get a big enough sample in the spring but strategically once it really matters in a regular season or playoff setting I feel like teams would be incentivised to save their challenges for late game spots or high leverage early spots. Who cares if they got the call wrong on a 0-2 count with 2 outs and nobody on in the first kind of thing. For that reason I think I might prefer a spot where you get 1 in every 3 inning stretch(1-3, 4-6, 7-9) and they don't carryover so early missed calls will get reviewed rather than brushed off. That would eliminate the side effect of a bunch of challenges in 1 inning if you gave them more but you don't want to overcomplicate the system.
