I'll say this if Rick gets hired he will have a chip on his shoulder due to ARI and knowing he likely wasn't on the Jets top two choices, certainly not the fans top two choices for a HC. He will want to come here and put his best foot forward b/c if he fails here after ARI it might be the last chance he gets as a HC in the NHL.

If he fails, at least it'll be a hell of a decade as the Jets' head coach for him to reminisce about...

Hilarious but very valid. I hope they’ve come to grips that coaches DO in fact have a shelf life and that people like Trotz in Nashville are the outlier. If you ain’t winning, you’re not cashing checks. Simple as that.

But seriously, I’ve never been so down and pessimistic on this team. If Trotz had signed, I’d consider finding a group to share tickets with after being invested in a group that bowed out after 10 years.. now…

Let’s just say yikes..

Whoever fails as our next HC will be time for a full rebuild either way.......so maybe its not a big deal.

I've criticized the Jets alot over the years, especially earlier on in our 11 years. From the start I said they should of just done a scorched earth rebuild and they went with the restructuring route with very moderate results to-date. If they decided to go full scorched rebuild right now I would be very ok with it. I just see teams who intentionally lose do better then teams like the Jets who never did it and try the restructure route........so don't agree with that choice.

Just stop recycling coaches. How hard can it be to find a coach that has won at every level they have coached at. CHL, AHL,NCAA, Europe. Find a good winning coach. This is the NHL. If you offer a good coach from outside of the league chances are pretty high they will say yes and jump at the opportunity.
Being a NHL head coach trumps whether or not it is in Winnipeg.

Good point. He had maybe 1 first line player in any given year to work with in Arizona. His best centers were second line caliber. He's likely getting 4 first liners hwre including 2 number 1 C's and a Vezina goalie. That is a much better starting point. Throw in Perfetti and likely another acquisition (Tochett not at all afraid to play smaller skill guys like Keller and Garland) and he has a top 6 a mile better then he had there.

From what I can gather he prefers to run a moder top 9 and his third lines scored decently well. So that is something different he may bring to the table here.

So maybe he brings a similar template as the 2016 Pens where he uses a modern top 9, speed and puck pressure with a mobile dcore.

PK's outside of 20-21 were quite respectable, PP's were not but that might be a talent issue.

So If we do bring in Rick and say Arniel then I'd expect a good PK and a balanced forward core with a more mobile dcore. We'd need to bring in an assistant that specializes in the PP and one with a good mind for defense.

Another thing Arizona's metrics this year were significantly worse then anything they did with Tochett. As they were the year before he got there.

This year they had a relative XGF/60 of -18% in
terms of offensive chance generarion whereas they were between a -1 to -6% under Tochett. The year preeceeding Rick they were -10%.

They were a + 12% relative XGA/60 this year In terms of chances given up. With Tochett they were break even to + 7 XGA/60. The year that preceeded Rick they were + 22%

So to me Tochett got significantly more out of the team in terms of chance share then the coaches who predated and preceeded him.

I actually feel a lot better now about him. He improved that Coyotes team by a lot in terms of 5 on 5 play.

Nah. Finding the next head coach is for teams that want to try something new. TNSE is as bold as lukewarm mayonnaise.

I would offer him a 3-year deal with third year being the Jets option with no buyout. If he was let go after the first year, he would only get 2/3 of his salary owing for the second year of the contract.

The fact that Tocchet when apparently given an offer to coach an NHL team has to take his time to think about it tells me that literally no qualified coach was interested in the position. Coaches with win percentages in the .400 range needing time to make a decision is humiliating. There is something rotten in Denmark.

I don't think it necessarily means that absolutely nobody wants the job. Tocchet is the only one they've apparently put an offer on the table to aside from Trotz.

With that said I lean towards the idea that's already been voiced here -- If Tocchet has even a hint of hesitation to accept because he's comfortable with a TV gig then that should automatically take the offer off the table. That's literally the same excuse that Trotz gave True North but he had the (apparent) decency to actually tell them straight up that he wasn't fully committed to coaching.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I hate being a bubble team.

Not good enough to win a Stanley Cup.

Not bad enough to draft multiple high end talented players.

From what I've read, the 2023 Draft is very deep.

I am okay with going with young players and missing the playoffs in 2022-23.

Maybe with a little lottery luck and some shrewd trades, we can have a team like Colorado.

As near as I can tell no other team has considered him to be their coach. II feel for Jets‘ owners. This must be a bitter pill to swallow. It sure feels that way to me and I am an unapologetic Jets fanatic.

Effing Rick Tocchet?

Why can't we bring in a winner? There have to be at least half a dozen young coaches out there looking for an opportunity. I'd rather give one of them a shot then a known sub-par coach.

If this is true, it is so disappointing.

He's obviously not even True North's first choice but it is what it is I guess.

I'll feel better about hiring Tocchet if the roster is blown the f*** up at the draft

If this is the Jets positioning to run it back :help:
Remember what we said about the Bombers and Tim Burke, man (I cautiously assume man), this is just the NHL’s equivalent. Hopefully we can convince Huddy to stay and really give it a run at the lottery.

He won two cups as an assistant so he is a winner in that sense. Whether he can translate that as a HC with a more talented group then what he had to work with in Arizona remains to be seen.
