I guess I missed this earlier in the CBC article or it was edited in later, but the lawyer for the girl (Sage Humphries) is saying the claims against Katz are bullshit.

In a statement to CBC News, the lawyer representing Humphries and the other dancers dismissed the action as a "meaningless sideshow."

"As is typical of abusers facing serious litigation, the Buttons have filed counterclaims that distract from and distort the truth and weaponize the serious allegations of abuse that have been brought against them," wrote Sigrid McCawley, managing partner at Boies Schiller LLP.

"Their counterclaims falsely implicate others and are an unfounded attempt to portray the women they abused as liars."

If the texts are real though then Katz is going to have to explain why he told the 17 year old not to tell anyone about the $50,000 payment.
His story that he paid her for a movie is clearly bull$hit.
Given his history I think this is likely the final nail in his coffin. Can’t say I’ll be sorry to see him forced out.

While i am glad a guy with uber deep pockets wiling to spend to the cap bought the Oilers....Never thought too highly of Katz as a person.

But I will say this....the lawyer of the third party sure seems like a class act, eh? Representing Alex Jones? This is the kind of lawyer that will throw any kinda shit at any wall just to see what sticks.

Hoping it's true. I don't like the guy myself, but don't want to have him dragged through the mud for nothing.

That goes for anyone...I mean the court of public opion is so quick and ruthless and NEVER apologetic.

What is the context of that text message?

Far be it from me to defend Katz -- his time as owner has been shit for the most part -- but I think it's pretty crappy that he's being labelled a pedophile when the girl's own attorney is saying the accusation is false.

Seven pages of surprise and outrage that a billionaire paid for sex. People pay for it everyday... gosh rich people too?

You are right, people do disgusting things everyday so we shouldn't hold a billionaire accountable for paying for sex with a minor. Makes sense, if you were raised with a baseball bat to the head.

Unfortunately people with that kind of money often don't face repercussions for their disgusting behavior. The entire Epstein Isle saga kinda affirmed that, if there was ever any doubt.

Someone who has a better understanding of the law than me needs to clear this up.

From what I understand, Katz being named as a 3rd party defendant means the couple being sued by the girl is now countersuing and trying to go after Katz for damages relating to underage prostitution. They're arguing that the 75k exchanged wasn't for the film but as a sexual transaction which would change age of consent from 16 to 18.

The couple would need to prove that money was exchanged for sex, which I feel would be extraordinarily hard to do if both Katz and the girl denies it.

I don't doubt he had sex with her and that's what the money was for. However, I expect there won't be evidence strong enough to prove it was explicitly for sex and not for her film project. Considering she was above the age of consent, she's not the one levying the accusations, it's a civil claim, and there likely won't be the evidence to prove the prostitution, I don't think this is going to stick in any way. Is there even any evidence that proves they had sex if they both deny it?

What am I missing here? The couple being accused is countersuing and including Katz to get money. The womans own lawyer says the countersuing is bs

While Katz may or may not have done something, nothing will come out of it because he will not be under investigation as both he and the girl will deny it. As it stands, there's no evidence that Katz paid for sex with a teenager or even a credible accusation other than a text about $50k

Enjoy your hit of outrage and insulting strangers on the Internet. Stand up behaviour for when you've got the power of right. And zero tolerance for fallibility. The opposite of what Jesus would do but you've somehow found the moral high ground.

$75K for sex? I get that inflation is impacting all aspects of the economy, but nobody pays $75K for sex. C'mon now.

"teenager" should probably be changed to "underager".

At least over here it's legal to do so with someone who's 18 or 19.

With underager at 50 something?

Anyways, I'll steer clear from this discussion otherwise.

So who actually read the article and not just the headline?

The girls own attorney denies it, and says this countersuit claim from the real abusers is being used to make the girls out to look like liars. The buttons (those who filed the countersuit against Katz) are being represented by a legal team that defended Alex Jones and has faced disciplinary proceedings in three states in the US.

If he's guilty then of course throw the book at him but this looks to me like it won't stick whatsoever.

That's not at all what was said.

That's a pretty clear statement in lawyer speak that they believe the counterclaim's accusations are false

Neither of those explicitly mention Katz; there were two other men in the suit who allegedly did more or less the same thing. It also is not a categorical denial Katz paid the victim for sex. If it was that cut and dry that would've been the statement.

Sorry they didn't spell out Katz for you.
