  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Surprisingly a lot of people think y'all lost the trade here. Didn't realize Nemec was so lowly thought of.

Cause in my mind, it's a high probability none of the picks given up amount to anything better than Nemec (maybe even all of them combined)even if he reaches top 4 D level.

Lots of young talent now.. another reason to look forward to next season.
People hate 22yrs old d-man.
I remember Rasmus Dahlin.

Just awful defense and coaching. In private talks with people in Slovakia Nemec bitterly complained about his coach. That's why he wanted to get out of New Jersey ASAP - as early as a year ago.
NY Islanders wanted to trade for him and almost succeeded. At the last moment, the Devils' GM changed his mind and asked for an extra pick, and this killed the deal.
Brad Shaw is the coach who handles the defence in New Jersey.

I know Tsyplakov was a bit of a throw in here from Jersey’s perspective… but what are the plans with this guy? He’s making north of 2M, UFA after this season. Was absolute shite last year for two clubs after having a nice little intro to the NHL a couple years back.

We have a glut of mediocre wingers, this sort of just adds to it. Is he Wrangler bound?
Send him to Edmonton, so Bowman can extend him for another 7 years at $5 million. That seems to be his specialty. :D

No need to get sensitive here. I’m giving my honest opinion. I quite like Calgary and always hope the best for them. Seems like a lot of people also agree with what I say all around this site and on tv too

Time will tell.. I assume you are a Flames fan so you will see when he arrives. I hope for the best for him and the Flames though

Usually when people get over sensitive with trades it’s cause they aren’t comfortable with what their team gave up. Nemec has potential forsure but I just haven’t seen it really YET
I'm not remotely sensitive about the trade, the more I have thought about it, the better I think it looks. Just think you sound like someone who just likes to hear themselves talk. People don't visit other teams boards and post negative thoughts because they think it will be popular, they do it for a reaction... if only there was a word for that behavior

oh sorry i didnt realize hockey fans cant post in other teams boards. My bad. How dare I speak what I think about the trade even though Ive always liked the Flames. I know sometimes fans dont like hearing thoughts from other hockey fans.... I think there is a certain word for that behaviour.

Usually die hard Flames fans have always been real cool and knowledgeable........ till now

AGAIN, i really hope this trade works out for the Flames in the long run

I dont mind the trade. Like the player, just dont like the fit, especially if Verhoeff is picked at 6th. Byram trade was insane and shows how pricy defensemen like these guys are valued.

I think many flames fans aren't worried about the value because of what we have in the pipeline. Adding two future 20s ish picks and two second rounder value would just amplify or current logjam.

We need to shed roster players to make things work and make room for prospects to graduate. Many of the veteran guys we will shed have good value which will top up the the picks and assets we just moved out.

We have guys like Reschny, Suniev, Potter, Wyttenbach, Mews, Brzustewicz, stromgren chomping at the bit. More late rounders may surprise after development camp.

We still have a lot of top picks after this trade.

Our coin purse is overflowing and basically ripping. Maybe we swapped $6 in change for a fiver, but it helps us avoid ripping the purse and losing random coins for nothing. We are also on with the premium paid for blue chip due to the flames' history with lots of hella good vs elite.

I think most haven't fully realized how much draft capital Conroy still has coming in with potential moves for guys like Maatta, Coleman, Frost, Strome etc.

We could lose trade value on this trade, but as long as he's a serviceable second pairing guy, we are still fine and moving in the right direction. I think that's why most flames fans are shrugging off the value given up.

Most flames fans complaining about the trade are complaining about the position acquired vs the assets given up.

We also have a way better situation to unlock Nemec than jersey did, so that's probably why there's more chat about the fit than value.

When a player enters the NHL at a really young age name recognition kicks in faster. And if that player doesn't take off after like 2-3 years in the league people start to think that player is a bust, despite still being so early in their development. The exact same thing happened to Hanifin when we acquired him and he turned out just fine.

Take Thomas Harley for example. He had played a total of 40 NHL games by Nemec's age and D+4 year, but everyone and their mom became enamored with him in his D+5 and D+6 years (age 22 and 23) because he went from an unknown to 4 Nations replacement, to Olympian. On the other hand Nemec has played 155 NHL games, yet is considered a bust despite also being an Olympian and putting up a double digit goal season at a younger age.

Even if Nemec doesn't pan out to be a Harley level player (which I think should be around his projection) this is well worth the risk IMO. Defensemen always take a while to develop and Calgary desperately needs guys with star potential.

If we want opinions from other fans, there is these other sections referred to as the "main boards" that contain fans of all teams. I mean you know they are there, you were saying the same there but no one was biting so you moseyed on over here.

the team was trash this year, and they have a loser coach. Nemec is probably getting scapegoated a bit, as they lash out.

A lot of it had to do with how entitled he is. Multiple times lashing out in the media, wanting for playing time, upset with having to play in the AHL, and reported (by multiple insiders) to be demanding a crazy high-dollar contract even though he hasn't accomplished much at all in his career, and he needs to be sheltered defensively. That and the fact he was a #2 that so far is a bust in that regard in many fan's eyes led to some unfair critiques of him IMO given how young he is, but some criticism is definitely fair. A fresh start for him is probably for the best, and frankly it seems management & possibly coaching staff was sick of him too. Personally I dismiss the "bust" characterization as ridiculous as he's only 22 years old, but at the same time I get Devils fans disappointment with him thus far. His advanced stats are pretty poor.

I came across a few of their threads this season and I felt the consensus was that Nemec should be played more than Luke Hughes and will turn out to be the better player.

This is definitely not true as Luke Hughes is substantially better than Simon Nemec, both offensively and defensively. Both the eye test as well as advanced metrics bear that out.

Luke Hughes blows

That's a scorching hot take, but if currently you think "Luke Hughes blows" then you're not likely going to be very satisfied with Simon Nemec. And 2025-2026 was Hughes worst season so far, he disappointed.

And you don't think that Luke being GoldenBoy's baby brother getting all the plum starts, linemates, and PP usage affects such counting stats? His best results at even strength was while being paired with.. Simon Nemec btw. hmm

Enjoy another couple years of Hamilton and Markstrom. I'm sure those two will get this headed in the right direction for the Devils.

Hello everyone. As seen from my avatar, I'm a big Nemec's fan. And obviously from the avatar, a Slovak at the same time. I was following closely Simon's path with the Devils. Frankly speaking, I'm glad he's no longer part of that organization. Unfortunately for him and for the org, the circumstances were not well for his proper development. NJ was stuck at RHD + having Hamilton to take the PP role + picking potential another #1 Dman year earlier in Luke Hughes.

I've never envisioned Nemec to be moved to the Flames. With a few NHL players the Slovaks are having, having 3 (Pospisil, Honzek) in the same organization, is staggering and surely embracing for all 3 of them.

Looking forward to start following more closely your organization and I hope my boys will bring you joy and success.
